To send a message…if you continue to roll Marner/Matthews like normal it shows that their production and offensive output is acceptable. Most benching are because you wanna send a message. It’s more so to keep players accountable. Marner at the start of the year wasn’t great, offensively invisible or snake bitten and definitely not great defensively either however he was rolled continuously 19-21 minutes.

You still want to win the game, I think the decision had more to do with how much he was contributing offensively and the score and less to do with sending a message. Maybe he will clarify in the post-game, but I would assume you'd see Willy in OT if it got there.

GDT wasn't toxic at all. The guys who got roasted deserved it in the moment. That was a pretty bad game.

Willy didn't play well but not sure why he's the only one in the 'core four' that is subject to any accountability

Especially when he has been instrumental in some key wins.

Yeah I would expect Marner and Nylander to be held to the same standard. Some players need the carrot others the whip. I imagine they feel Nylander responds best to the whip.

Anyway we don’t even know if he was benched or the details behind it. I don’t see the big deal.

That hasn't been the "Leafs way" since Keefe has taken over. No way he is going to let them live this down, because this was arguably their worst defensive effort of the season.

Ehh they obviously don't play like this every game, but this isn't the only pitiful effort from a Keefe's led leafs team in general let alone this season.

Great game by the lesser lights like Kerfoot Kampf Kase Bunting, etc. Not a very good game by the $40 Million dollar 4 or the defence of Muzzin or Holl. Take the two points without Campbell in net and run.

that's true, could just be that different players respond differently. nylander often does come back strong after a benching.
