Confirmed with Link: Leafs sign RHD John Klingberg (1 year, $4.15M) | UPD 11/23: LTIR

Agreed. The guy is serving a very valuable purpose and is doing it well. I'm not sure what people were expecting.

I agree. It isnt his fault Toronto doesnt have a true #1, #3 and possibly even #4 D to fill those roles. If they did then no one would be complaining about Klingberg. This is like the Kessel/Phaneuf Leafs; fans and the media got on their case when they were doing everything as advertised but it didnt provide the desired results as the team werent playing them in the proper roles.

Its why the moment Kessel left the Leafs he won 2 cups with Pittsburgh and Phaneuf was 1 goal away from a cup final with Ottawa.

When everyone's healthy he definetely belongs on the 3rd pair playing sheltered minutes & powerplay. Always thought Gio made sense as a smart reliable partner who can move the puck.

This works out great for Liljegren, giving him a real top 4 opportunity.

He has looked good at both ends at times.

I appreciate he can actually handle the puck in the d-zone and make decisions within allotted time.

Not sure if people thought the Leafs were signing a top pairing d-man for that money?

He has value for this team through his powerplay work and puck control.

I couldn't say the same about Barrie

His defense isn't terrible either, he's just prone to boneheaded mistakes here and there and he's pretty useless moving forwards away from the net (could say that about the other 5 guys too)

I like his game, I know what he is. The Jake Gardiner comparison isn't far off. Gardiner was just a bit dumber.

I think it was inevitable that Lily got promoted and Klingberg given the sheltered 3rd pairing. As long Lily is up to the tougher assignments and Kling helps the PP it should work out fine.
So far, so good (at least after the first couple games) for Lilligren

The biggest plus for his acquisition was freeing up Mo's minutes so he can be on the ice for more ES time. He went from around 18 minutes last year to approximately 22 minutes.

Tanev brings zero offense, though. We're going run into the same issues as previous years where no one but Rielly can generate anything offensively
I don’t necessarily agree with you we should get more offense just from being in the offensive zone everyone will be slotted in there right spot and you can see if timmons can be the 3rd with Brodie maybe I unno but it beats keeping klingberg for 4 mill and having mccabe in the top 4

In the playoffs you have to move the Puck to get to the offensive zone

We struggle to score because to many of our defenseman can't get the Puck up ice, Mo is good but he can't be the only offensive catalyst on the backend

We need what Klingberg brings, there's plenty of other defenseman who can do the defending but we lack offense back there

Yes I understand but like I said we have a better offensive group so having a better defence core should lead to more offence you get it ? Our quality of defence will help get us out of our zone tanev beside rielly and sort the rest out lily second pair and so on

We tried that theory last season

There's a reason why McCabe and Brodie sucked together, every pair needs a Puck mover or you never get out of your own zone

So your forwards could be the greatest offensive players in history but if the defense can't get the Puck to them it means Jack ****

One Puck mover isn't enough, you get it?

You know there’s D that can do both right? Someone who can move the puck out of our zone reliably doesn’t need to be an offensive zone wizard or PP quarterback. Likewise defensive D don’t need to be Polak, there’s plenty of guys that can win puck battles and have a decent first pass.

Those guys cost a fortune to aquire and as I'm sure you are aware we aren't exactly swimming in cap space or assets

I did not say nothing about Brodie and McCabe together buddy lily gets one gio and deadline acquisition if Timmons isn’t ready fight it out for the bottom pair along with the other

100% and we can make the money work even to get tanev and see what it cost to get peeke over there rielly tanev Brodie lily McCabe gio peeke I like it it’s mature and not fragile

He’s the Swedish version of Jake gardiner
No man gardiner is good for a gaff but this guy is something else
