Confirmed with Link: Leafs sign RHD John Klingberg (1 year, $4.15M) | UPD 11/23: LTIR

Re: the bolded that's what I expected to find but:

19-21 Heiskanen CF% with Kling 66.75, without Kling 50.96 and Kling without Heiskanen 54.47.
19-21 Lindell CF% 48.93 with Kling, 36.64 without Kling, and Kling without Lindell 61.41

Those are significant differences although the minutes with Heisk are much lower than with Lundell. The minuses don't jive with the shot based metrics though.

I think he may be pretty good beside McCabe and this would be the year to work Lilly in with Rielly more.
Look at goal differential i think that is where i noticed the difference the most.. or xga.. or both

Will be curious to see which type of secondary puck-moving defenseman Klingberg is. The last one we had in Barrie sucked hard, but Gardiner before him was legitimately good save for a couple bad Game 7s (that frankly, Andersen should take more heat for).
Always thought so as well. Sort of suffered from misleading appearances not unlike Sundin did at first and to an extent what Nylander endures; Parts of the game seem effortless to them and are misconstrued by some of the fanbase as apathy.

Both are bad... one is just bad and plays a more Minny-style game.

I think Klingberg might do alright in our system, Minny doesn't seem like a good fit.

I've learned from this summer though, most people don't know anything about the players outside of the name, so I think that is why people want Dumba.
Maybe, but from the numbers the coaching staff seemed to want Dumba over Klingberg

I assume the offense is the draw for Klingberg, but its interesting how opposite he is from the style of D most wanted. If he can move the puck in transition and limit big mistakes ill be happy

So umm about that

Interesting hypothetical topic of discussion: if Dumba were willing to take the same 1 year @ $4M, would you prefer Dumba over Klingberg? My answer is yes. I tend to agree that Klingberg is going to be very similar to Barrie, a redundant offensive defenseman who doesn't kill penalties and requires sheltered ice time at times.
I'd actually opt to sign Klingberg because I perceive the offensive gap between the two to be a bit more pronounced than the defensive gap is. I'd still ultimately say though that a blueline which can't defend well enough is just the opposite side of a problematic coin for a blueline which can't provide enough offensive support.

To the mediocre, mediocrity is happiness.

Because mediocrity knows nothing higher than itself.

Even after thinking about it for a while, I'm still disappointed in this signing. I was really hoping Treliving would make upgrading 1RHD a priority. So far the only thing he's done is swap out Holl for a poor man's Karlsson.

With a little wheeling and dealing he could have had the real thing.

But the Leafs don't have the intestinal fortitude to make a swing for the fences trade. So the fans get to keep enjoying a mediocre team. With a mediocre Klingberg doing mediocre things.

I'm living proof that work ethic equals results.

Just getting by isn't good enough for this team, however. At some point they're gonna have to make some tough decisions. Because mediocrity is a choice, and once you choose to tolerate it, you get more of it.

Which is why we get Klingberg instead of Karlsson.

You certainly work hard on this tired parody, we’ll give you that. Lol

I think the word "mediocre" when applied to this team in general is disingenuous. A team that is projected to be top 5-8 in the league is hardly mediocre. I understand you disapprove of this signing, and that you want more change from this management, but you undermine your point by labelling a 105-115 point team "mediocre".

I like how Gibson is still "one of the best goalies in the league, just on a bad team!" after years of terrible play, but one bad season on the same team takes a 7 million dollar, former top pairing dman and now he's awful and overpaid at 4 million.

There are literally posters saying he's worse than Justin f***in Holl.

I'm sorry for not making it clear, but the measuring stick for this team is playoffs success.

And with regards ro those results, they've been mediocre. Even what regular season success they've achieved is limited to a few more points than normal at the end of the year. They still haven't won the Atlantic division, the Eastern Conference, or the President's trophy.

I mean, a team that doesn't win anything in the regular season, and routinely goes out early in the postseason, is about as mediocre as it gets in my books.

But we all measure success differently I guess.

A team with championship aspirations is by definition... not mediocre. The Leafs are disappointing, yes. Frustrating, yes. But you feel disappointment and frustration because there is the understanding they are capable of more. That's not exactly mediocrity, even if we are just arguing over technicalities.

Anyway, back to Klingberg. I think it's a reasonable gamble on a player that up until very recently was a quality offensive defenseman who went on a deep playoff run and offers the kind of QB'ing on defense we don't really have. Rielly is more of a rusher on D but not a refined field marshal out there. Klingberg can shoot it a couple of ways, has wingspan, walks the line with agility and seems to have creative vision. We'll see how it works out. If he's not a good fit we we could always just flip him at the deadline.

are those expectations still reasonable to hold after so many failures? maybe those expectations were not justified. like how burke thought adding kessel would push the team into out of lottery draft range. he misjudged the quality of the team. maybe we're doing the same. there's enough sample size. maybe this team should not have championship aspirations.

don't get me wrong, the team isn't awful, but like the early 00s ottawa senators. decent regular seasons, awful playoffs. maybe mediocre isn't the right word, maybe it's just above average but not good enough.

adding two morons like domi and bertuzzi is only going to make the team suck more.

klingberg also sucks, terrible on D, which you'd like in a so called defenseman

Take a step back and breathe. The vitriol some of you spit is hilarious. You don’t know Domi and Bertuzzi personally, yet attack them for no apparent reason other than your growing frustration with the organization. It’s a very immature look, do better.

Well, if the team is flawed in construction and the core players aren’t good enough to win, there’s even less reason to be upset since they aren’t technically underperforming. And we can look forward to possible big changes without worrying about keeping all the precious talent.

I think care less is the key in any case. The team was branded on championship pursuits the last few years, and it simply did not reward the fanbase that made a big emotional investment. Now is time to sit back and reassess as a fan.

Fans don’t need to reassess. You’re either a fan or your not.

I'd disagree. There have definitely been years where I spent less time on this team, spent less money, or was fully dialed in, went to more games, didn't miss a beat, poured over the draft classes, etc.
That’s what’s known as a fair weather fan, which I doubt you are.

I'm fascinated by the fact that he thinks he's "proof that work ethic equals better results", without even a shred of context or 'proof'...only proving that this supposed "work ethic" doesn't improve one's whiney internet posting, nor does it lead one to come across and understand the concept of "anecdotal evidence" (which is what their experience would actually be, rather than 'proof', if we pretend his fantasy idea of himself is real life).

The idea of a "fairweather fan" is silly IMO. I love Kessel but that era was dog shit. I went to Phaneuf's first game and had a good time, but as things went down hill I didn't go to another game and started watching games in the background while doing something else fun, then ended up watching fewer games. I've been a Leaf fan since 1997, but I'm not going to dedicate 3 hours a night x82 (246hours/year) to something if I'm not enjoying it, or not enjoying it enough for it to be my entire evening, and to do something else I do enjoy instead (or along with the game) while still following the team. If that would constitute Fairweather fandom, I'd be fine with it if the alternative of being a real fan is to be miserable about the team/sport 90% of the time (as appears to be the case for many here).

I think some Leaf fans here would have a better time if they didn't force something on themselves that, judging by their posts (not you), they do not enjoy anymore. Fairweather vs. Insanity and misery because of a game? I think I'll take the not nice moniker.

From the highlights I've seen - I will say this. He legit has one of the best wristers I've seen on a defensemen, he is pin-point accurate with that thing even from the blueline.
