Not necessarily. Kerfoot provides insurance if one of the C's gets injured and is a more than adequate top 9 LW.

I think the Leafs like Engvall as a guy who can move down the middle if there are injuries. Malgin too if we need a RH guy. Neither look like they will be great at draws, but neither does Kerfoot.

May not be completely popular, but the Leafs may rely upon Abruzzese or Holmberg too if someone is out for an extended period of time. Start to lean on these higher end prospects when injuries hit.

So basically we are replacing Kerfoot with a Kerfoot like player…….does that make us better or just different
Honestly, I don't know alot about this player, but it sounds like he'll be better defensively, better on the PK, and better on faceoffs. In addition, I don't hate this guy as opposed to Kerfoot, who I think is a sandwich short of a picnic upstairs. Takes brutal penalties and may have cost us game 6 with the help of the refs.

what are the chances Niederreiter comes down into the $4m range?

I would take a look at that. Nino's numbers are always kind of underwhelming but he does bring some of the power ingredients that could change the top six dynamic.

Is there anything else worth buying in free agency if we move off Kerfy and Holl? Or just to create enough cap space to get Sandin and Engvall done?
If Sonny Milano is still there, and we could get him on a 2 year deal below his last years salary, I think that could be an interesting fit.

We have $2,372,717 in cap space with the following roster and Engvall and Sandin left to sign

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Robertson - Tavares - Nylander
Kerfoot - Jarnkrok - _________
Anderson - Kampf - Aube-Kubel

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Girodano - Liljegren
________

Murray
Samsonov

If we end up signing both Engvall and Sandin we have to clear some space, but Holl would probably do. I'd like to move Kerfoot as well though.

I don't think so. His Modified no Trade Clause only blocks him from going to 10 teams.

Oh, I thought he had a full NTC. He could potentially be moving then.

I think he still has a role, but him being scratched in the playoffs suggests that Keefe isn't keen enough with what he brings and the team may feels its easier to move on.

The penalty that put him in the doghouse was a chintzy side of the net push when a TB player was in Campbells face. The squishy dishonourable TB player put his face in his gloves as if in pain.

After that game I lost interest, I could see where it was going with such an absurd call.

If he moves on, Leafs better have enough guys willing to stand their ground or we will be recycling the same old concerns. Teams and the league allow other teams to get away with alot against the Buds but not vice versa.

I see more of a Holl move than a Kerfoot one.

They already have too many bodies on defence, that's where the cap space goes from.

Likely don't see the Holl trade until after Sandin is signed, since Holl is insurance on any offer sheet or if Sandin sits out.

I asked this in the main board thread as well, but what is the difference between signing a 27-year-old to an 8-year deal and a 31-year-old to a 4-year deal? Both end when the player is 35.

Versatile player that Pk and can play all positions.

Like I said it was an ok signing not great.

We do need some snarl and size though.

We have needed some snarl and size upfront for five years it seems. It is never addressed, Keefe dropped Clifford and Simmons after two games and miraculously the team continues to lose in the playoffs.

You don't build your team around the heavy, net sitting players but they make a difference in the playoffs, Perry is a prime example well past his prime. Look at how the Rangers are built. They sprinkle in enough heavy players to balance their lineup.

Maybe it's Keefe and his lack of faith in some guys. He says he likes his team to play physical and he should. This guy fills a role and it isn't to be physical. At least find SOME who Keefe will play in the playoffs and not sit them after a game or two.

Everyone saying Kerfoot is being traded now.. Call me crazy but would be nice to have some depth for once up front. Last year we had the chance to run both Kerfoot and McCaan and we chose to keep only 1. Now we face a similar choice, this time trade Holl like you should of last season.

Would sooner keep both Kerfoot and Jarnkrok, move Holl, and run 18 skaters until Muzzin gets hurt 2 weeks into the season

From a risk perspective, the signing at 31 will always be less risky. It's lower commitment and fewer opportunities for something unexpected to happen. Also more data gathered in first 4 years.

On the opposite end of that, the ceiling is more delineated and you're paying for likely the "worst" time in those deals.

I have yet to see an 8 year x 2.1 mill contract (im sure it's out there) so I think it's taken into account.

So the worst case safe scenario for the forwards, at this point,

Bunting - Matthews -Marner
Kerfoot - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall - Kampf - Jarnkrok
Aube-Kubel -

with the hope that some kids play well enough to bump some of these guys down some notches.

Of course, I wouldn't be shocked if in Dubas' mind Jarnkok is a Kerfoot replacement and that we may trade Kerf now for a cheaper different forward.
that 2nd line needs a shake up.

This is a good signing. I like Benn and really like Jarnkrok. Jarnkrok has some snarl. Good all arounder.

Good by Kerfoot and Holl, which frees up 5.5 and change. We still have the space to sign a pretty good lower pair D man with some bite.

I already like this team better than last years team. Now if we could only get a coach that knows what he is doing.

that 2nd line needs a shake up.
agreed. I think its time to move on from Nylander and bring in the stud d we need. Nylander is a coward and lets up going into corners. We don't need a player like that.

Playoff series win minimum or he’s out. There’s no way it’s not on the line

A guy who is on thin ice does not get to promote and fill the organization with his people like Dubas did over the past couple of months.

They'd have to clear almost the entire management as well as development and scouting group as well.

Dubas/Shanahan are not going anywhere.
