100%, I think as a group the team has fallen below expectations in the playoffs and anyone who says they haven’t is lying. But these guys are worth every penny in the regular season; they continue to get better. I think all of us just want to see if translate, see one or all three be dominant come April.
At times they even exceed their cap hit (regular season) which is shocking to some but only because they're to lazy to understand why

Is it starting to look like this guy got rich, embraced celebrity life and is now mailing it in?

Why would you mail it on a 4 year deal? Sign for 8 if you are going to basically just go through the motions.

More than likely what is happening is he just doesn't look great, but it is a small sample size and he will turn it around.

The guy is averaging nearly a goal per game, and people are complaining about him. It's very hard to take stuff like that seriously.

It looks like he scored back to back hat tricks, got some bad bounces afterwards and cooled off offensively. The other 200 foot stuff has looked great at times, unnoticeable at times and I wonder if we shouldn’t use him for PK because he’s not exactly a high octane high endurance player. Not liking his look off shots tendency lately either.

Maybe it's the fact he has 1 goal and 4 points in his last 7 games?
And what did he average in the 2 games before that? My point is only that this guy is hardly the problem. The problem is what everyone and his sister knew it would be - the defense and the bottom 6. I am confident those issues will be addressed long before the playoffs, but you can't remake a team 9 games into a season. A couple of very small trades can easily fix the bottom 6 (i.e., acquire Cizikas and Clutterbuck from the Islanders for picks and low-end prospects), and the defense may resolve itself through a combination of Timmins coming back and a trade being made for a guy with size.

To be fair, Matthews parents do seem super nice.

Wait didn’t Mr. Matthews tell Auston not to report his police incident to the club?! What awful parents. Paul Marner never did such a thing!

That’s because it’s a joke. Someone made a very similar comment about Marner 2 games ago.

I seriously can’t believe Jack Hughes is locked in for 8 years at 8 million. Compared to other contenders, we are at such a competitive disadvantage thanks to our cap structure it’s ridiculous.
We got bit by having

1. Our players play good both individually right away for 3 years on their ELCs and the team at min being a consistent playoff team for those 3 years

2. Dubas being very pro player and not coming as a hard stance negotiatior

3. Bringing in Tavares at 11M which destroyed tbe internal cap structure

4. Our 3 core guys being very money focused (see off ice they all chase hughe advertising) and not looking to give any discounts whatsoever (they took premiums about 10-15% above comparables with less term)

Leafs are overpaying for relative production across the league. Its extremely difficult to operate under these conditions. Realistically, only cheap prospects can compensate, and even then its just temporary.

I don't see it with Matthews, that desire to do whatever it takes.

The goal is to draft players that underachieve and them sign them to long-term contracts and hope they succeed it... it is the Ottawa model.

I am confident those issues will be addressed long before the playoffs,

Really? Can I ask why?

Every year Dubas traded the future to shore up the bottom 6 and blueline depth because he didn't have the cap space in the summer and look where it got us. Another first round exit.

If Treliving follows the same philosophy and waits to the deadline to pick up some UFAs, expect another very short post-season.

Now I do give Brad some leeway for this year as he just joined the team last Summer and had limited time and resources to address long-standing issues, but I hope he recognizes quickly that the band-aid approach every February doesn't work and does as you hint at - fix them "long" before the playoffs but with longer-term additions.
