It’s not an excuse but it just seem like jt may not be a coincidence that he has 1 goal since then, but he has still had his chances.
Goal scorers are streaky, matthews as great as he is will have some streaks like this

He should get 50ish goals still which is great

Need him to be better with the play making. Marner should wake up so that will help and hopefully one bertuzzi/knies takes the LW spot and sticks

55 goals -45 assists should be what he gives us with above average 2-way play before ramping it up in the playoffs by maintaining that type of production (+/- 5 pts) agianst top teams best players.

The looks should go in again, he needs to just play like a top5 guy on most nights. Be dangerous, confident and assert his dominance pretty often with pts to follow

I get what you’re saying but he hasn’t looked the same to me since that hit either way

I for one am very excited to hear that Auston has recently snagged a deal with a sport drink company, Brine I think it's called. In signing it cements his relationship with media Hoare frost Logan Paul which moves him one step closer to the ever expanding orbit of Joe Rogaine and finally world domination! We may never win a cup with this player, but the exposure he's getting is invaluable.

Just joking around

feel bad for Matthews. He should have jumped ship when he got the chance!
Atleast all these Horawful signings outside of Reaves is just for 1 year.

Need a big retool next offseason.

He's certainly caught fire in the last two games but the concerning thing is it's not coinciding with Leafs wins.

Hopefully, it comes together but right now it looks like we are trying to force some square pegs into round holes with the offseason additions... Matthews can only do so much.

You guys have way too high of an opinion of Toronto to be bashing Matthews about only wanting to hang with celebrities and cash in. The chance to go to California and take home more cash and probably get paid even more on the open market was right there. This is nonsense. I'm shocked he chose stinky cold overpriced Toronto over LA, Vegas, Dallas, etc.

All of those places are competitive, close to home, closer to the celebrity life, out of the insane Toronto spotlight. Appreciate that he chose to stay here.

Those teams wouldn’t overpay him like the Leafs because those teams want to win.

When you've got a guy scoring like him, up to the coach to figure out how to win.

The bottom of the lineup is a mess, no chemistry there whatsoever

Matthews task as our franchise player will be to figure out ways he can control the game in addition to his scoring. He's dabbled in many facets of defensive takeaways, shot blocking, penalty killing, and it will be a continual process of evolving, adding elements that made Mackinnon and Crosby, etc. successful. I think he needs to step into the vacuum of emotional leader and find ways to energize the team in ways the other three Big 4 can't.

What he can't do is fall back on the old Phil Kessel concept of "I scored, therefore I did my clearly defined job."

I get what you're saying but then you used Kessel as somewhat of a comparison...

Matthews does way more then Kessel ever did. It's not even close.

Matthews has been great this season. He's been doing everything he can most games.

You just said how much Matthews does and then said he needs to do even more.

I think the whole f***ing team needs to do more. It shouldn't be up to Matthews to motivate this team. The guy kept them in the game last night and no one else stepped up.

They'd get 4, and they'd be ecstatic about it.

Except that in reality no team, especially the good ones, sign garbage deals like these. So you can pretend that the Leafs got a deal all you want but try to remember this when the real teams are in the playoffs.

You think a team would pass on signing Matthews if they couldn't get him for 8 years?
That's crazy, any Team would be happy to get him for whatever they could.

In terms of the BIG picture and playoff success with Matthews leading the way is this current generation of Leafs much different then the 1980's Leafs lead by Rick Vaive and his goal scoring antics?

I really don't see much difference in net end results ..

Over the course of 7 and a part seasons in comparison Matthews and Vaive contributed similar regular season totals.,

Vaive lead Leafs played in 7 playoff series winning 2 of them while Matthews as played in 8 winning but 1 single one.

As a diehard fan that witnessed both situation there is very little separating the end results and both can be defined as disappointing when it comes to winning when it matters no matter how many regular season goals they score. All these wasted years !!!

Is Matthews really not simply the Rick Vaive of this current generation?

Vaive is a beauty, golf with him occasionally, he and Peter Ing are members at Rockway Vineyards.

 Look at the penalty minutes.
