Well these players still believe in Shanny, Dubas and the plan. They wouldn't sign here if they wouldn't, so they get credit for these. Like it or not.
Good point. As I said earlier, Gio said he wants to win, there's also zero reason to doubt his sincerity when he says this so bottom line is that he would 100% not be signing here if he didn't think this team was poised to win it all.

I would also say that his opinion on this matter carries a lot of weight, certainly more than 99.99999% of the people posting here.
Is our defence contender worthy right now...I think so.

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl
Giordano Liljegren
Sandin
I don't know the other teams that well to be honest but my guess is that this is maybe even a top 5 D core and I love it!

he looked very good last season. given his style of play, which doesn't rely too much on speed, I'm hoping he's not going to fall off a cliff.

solid deal.

Giordano fills the TJ Brodie role of being the smart veteran defensive glue guy, but at a steep discount. I suppose the risk is a massive fall off over the next two years, but all of a sudden, I'm looking at Brodie a little more closely and thinking, "this guy is kind of vanilla at his cap hit."

Brodie, Muzzin both have 2x years left after this current season, but for cap purposes I want to see us move one this summer and the other by next summer. Leafs seem to really like Muzzin, so maybe Brodie goes first, Gio fills his role and then by next summer some combination of Niemela, Sandin and Liljegren have taken full time roles.

That’s an interesting take. I like TJ and I think defensively he is our top Dman but he is not physical and I posted this in other threads, if it was Muz, Boosh, Gio or even Reilly, Paul would not had scored that 2nd goal bc those four would had stood him up and might even land his a** on the ice.

This opens up lot of possibilities. It will be interesting to see RFA contracts of Liljegren and Sandin. We might have to get rid of some cap from defense, so trading Brodie or Muzzin (back to LA? I think that is only option for him with his contract) could be an option. This contract opens up some possibilities to really build up that proper third line.

We need those 800k - 2million value contracts to build our roster. We have already Kampf, Bunting, Giordano and hopefully Liljegren and Sandin. It would help if we could snatch two UFAs like Kampf and Bunting next summer.

Yeah, I just think for that cap money we could really consolidate more skillsets and abilities in one higher end defenseman. I'll just use Chychrun as a placeholder example, but if we offloaded Brodie for pure futures from a late rebuilder, packaged off some additional assets and picked up a Chychrun, we could get a young, better athlete with multi tool upside and cost controlled to grow with. My bigger picture hunch is we need a defenseman who will grow into a player who is better than Rielly.

Wouldn't be surprise if he went to Dubas with this himself. So to Dubas horney fans here: lets cool it for now fcol!
Either way, Geo has now become an instant hero in Leafs Nation. Deservedly so :thumbu:
...and he went to Dubas bc he likes the team that the GM built.

I see a lot of people wanting Muzzin, Holl and even Brodie moved so uhh who's supposed to kill penalties then?

I'm fine with moving anybody for the right return - ideally a better partner for Rielly than Brodie - but penciling in Giordano for second pair minutes is a mistake. (Not as much as signing him for 2-3M as some wanted would have been so yes, the 800k cap hit is a relief).

I think Reilly needs a partner. Tanev would have been great with Reilly.
As of now, I would resign Boosh and let him be with Reilly for the beginning of the season and have Lilly plays with Gio till X’mas. Then switch them.
Alternatively, sign a vet stay at home RD that can play with Reilly.

He will be turning 39 with the start of the season, but perhaps it means the end of the road for Holl. :crossfing

You need these older vets to mentor your young players sometimes, but in the bigger picture it does return some value for the 2nd round pick given up to get Gio and the TD.
I agree....if anything we should have always paired a good vet with rookies like we did Hainsey with Reilly. It seemed that Lilly really flourished after he started playing with Gio. Isn't traditional hockey team building odd that way?

it’s really funny that the leafs can’t win anything win they have all the advantages in the world…

Gio is faster than Sandin...I would put money on that. I like some of Sandin's attributes but his size and skating worry me long term. I am pleasantly pleased with Lilly and would keep him over Sandin. Your offensive upside is less but all around play is better. We have Reilly already and Muzzin and Gio are pretty good point shots. Time to start making moves.

What if it looked something like:

Rielly-Lyubushkin
Chychrun-Brodie
Giordano-Liljegren

Exit Muzzin, Holl, Sandin (in a Chychrun trade).

Both Muzzin and Brodie have full NTC next season. In July 2023 they both become partial NTC.
In 2023-24, Brodie has no signing bonus and has a salary of $7.5 million.
In 2023-24, Muzzin has a signing bonus of $2 million and that leaves $4 million in salary to pay.
Based on contracts, neither can be traded for a year, without their consent. Based only on financial considerations, Muzzin will be easier to trade in July 2023 than Brodie.

FWIW, the Leafs now have Rielly, Brodie, Muzzin, Holl and Gio signed for next year and Sandin and Lily has RFAs with no arbitration rights. These could easily be their seven defensemen next year.
Boosh is a UFA. Leafs may choose not to sign him, or he may want too much money to keep.
