"We need to extend Auston Matthews."

Shanny: "Get me the guy who lost Gaudreau and Tkachuk"
Perhaps an example of American born players no longer wishing to play for a Canadian team? Hoping that won't be the end result here.

IMO it's pretty clear that Shanny/the board were all in on M&M&N, LouLam and later Babs were not

Babs didn't like Nylander right? Lou I am not sure if it was Marner or Nylander as well. Matthews everyone loved and should still love until he betrays us.

Didn't Lou want us to take a D over Marner?

I ask you just one thing, just imagine pittsburgh didn't lost vs chicago at the end of season and florida missed the playoff and calgary find 2-3 pts they need to make it and having the same kind of surprising run because Markstrom suddently becoming an amaizing player, do we talk about that trade the same way?
Do WE talk about the trade the same way? Probably not as a collective. Me personally, absolutely. At the time of the trade I thought it was a good trade IF CGY moved out Huberdeau for more assets. The Huberdeau contract was always going to be bad but Calgary went ahead and made it their problem. Keeping Weegar and not moving out one of their top 4D (Kylington, Andersson, Tanev, Hanifin) was another misstep. They could have traded any of those 5 defenseman for another premium asset and still had a strong top 4 with Kulikov as a 4/5 with Kylington out for the season.

I am all about proper asset management though.

By all in I mean
"these are the horses we will win with, they are the franchise- work with them and make it work because they are irreplaceable cornerstones/ cashcows"
vs.
"no player is bigger than the team, no player is irreplaceable, play ball or you're out"

Attitude B plus the conflict between a Lou/Babs personality and approach vs Matthews/Marner "individualness" wasn't going to fly. Dubas just had to sell his belief in them and his ability/desire to make it work.

People are missing the bigger picture. The worry here is not that Shanahan is interfering. You want Shanahan between the Board and the team.

The worry is direct ownership meddling. It has been the downfall of this franchise for 50+ years.

Nothing I’ve seen or heard yet suggests that to me but I would like to see a real CEO back in place up there
There are some board members that are louder than the others... That's just the nature of corporate game.

It's upto to the president to keep that boundaries clear and as well allow that autonomy to run smoothly. Only afterwards reviewing the session to go at it from a logical perspective. It seems like that line has been fizzled and yea that comes down to the higher ups and the president.

The transition period up top also has likely played a part.

You never know what goes on behind closed doors .
Maybe the corporate bosses want them signed having just lost both Gaudreau and Tkachuk.

Its exactly what gaudreau reject to stay in Calgary...

I dont see where having too much good D should be a problem, just about to Carolina. Markstrom was a problem last season and just totally trash and cost a playoff spot to calgary.. Calgary was a top 5 team defensivly in term of expected goal against with goalie unable to stop anything.

And maybe next season or in 2 year when maybe Dustin Wolf will step up, maybe we will see calgary reach next step and we will talk about what treviling had built...

Like i said everything can change pretty quickly

Why? The only thing that has changed is Dubas's decision to try to be a mercenary

Tkachuk wanted out

Tkachuk wanted out, and nobody around the league knew about it. Tree wanted Huberdeau and didnt bother calling around.

Kind of like Shanahan wanting Tree and not shopping around. They're perfect for each other.

I think you'll see Marc Bergevin's name pop up too.

Kind of like Shanahan wanting Tree and not shopping around. They're perfect for each other.

It's pretty admirable the package he ended up getting for a player who was very selective in where he wanted to go - the choices were limited to 2 or 3 teams maximum.

Didn't Tkachuk want to go to Florida he held the hammer.

Shanny: "Get me the guy who lost Gaudreau and Tkachuk"
Although there is some hilarity to the truth of your post, I am not sure I can blame that entirely on Brad. The City of Calgary is never going to be a premier destination for US players. You add in the fact that they didn't even have an arena deal in place when those players left, it's really no shock that they left.

Brad was the GM in Calgary for almost 10 years. Kind of crazy it has been that long. He did a lot of good things, and a lot of bad things in that time. Similar to Dubas in Toronto.

I am not trying to suggest he is an ideal candidate by any stretch. But he is far from the worst. What irritates me is that Brad is seemingly the clubhouse leader in a search that Shanahan was quoted as saying will be "thoughtful and thorough". He is the first person that has been rumored to even get an interview....

It just kind of reinforces my belief that this was very clearly a shoot from the hip decision that was based entirely on emotion rather than logic. Shanny had no backup plan, and realized only after he notified Kyle that he'd not be returning that he needs a GM ASAP as he is heading into one of the busiest off-season's in team history. This "thoughtful and thorough" search he spoke of, was never going to be possible with the amount of work that needed to get done in the timeline it needed to occur by.

We went from a very well run organization to chaos in a matter of 1 week. Extremely upsetting TBH.

But onward and upward. Fingers crossed we can get some form of direction here in the near future.

Until the league fixes the tax discrepancy between the US and CDN markets this will happen. Same goes for low tax states vs high tax states. The league is essentially a joke at the cap level so markets like CGY where these guys don't want to live lose players. I wouldn't want to stay in CGY or EDM when I could go south and take a few less bucks, still make more and have access to tons of perks.
Didn't seem to effect McDrais. They signed new contracts there and McD gave them 8 years where as AM only 5. Makes you wonder ??

He is a yes man and that seems to be what Shanny wants under him.

To me this is not exciting in the least.... Feels like the kind of appointment the Leafs of 10+ years ago would make.
I see you have drank the koolaid...
