Offensively they are similar. Doug Hamilton is way bigger and stronger and has a longer reach. Rielly seems to avoid contact.

I'm not saying that Reilly is a better defenceman than Hamilton (too early for both of them so far), but if you're knocking Reilly because you think he lacks strength, you don't really have much of a clue about him. In fact, if it wasn't for his strength and how much he impressed at the Scouting Combine, I doubt he would have gone 5th.

I dont see the comparison at all with Kaberle. TK wasnt really the fastest skating defenceman, his strength was his decision making with the puck. You rarely saw him skating from his own end into the other teams blueline. I would Percy's game is more comparable to Kaberle.

Skating the puck calmly with poise was his biggest strength especially on the powerplay. He might not have been the fastest skater but he certainly wasn't a bad skater. Kaberle always seemed to be able to just calmly carry the puck up ice without getting hit.

It was a poor comparison, I just thought it was funny that 'kaberle-like' was being thrown out as somehow a negative thing. Maybe that guy hasn't been watching long enough to remember when the Leafs were good. McCabe is a joke of a defenseman now that he a) will be penalized for turning players sideways with his stick between their legs as they blow past him and b) doesnt play with a prime Kaberle.

nothing to do with hate. just common freakin sense. anyone who has some realizes that after being one of the absolute worst hockey teams in the NHL for the past few years a team should have really good prospects.

Toronto hasn't got good prospects compared to other teams in the league and in the division and are STILL ONE OF THE WORST NHL TEAMS!

AHL teams don't mean ****. I watch the Leafs and not some terrible washed up players who can't even make a pass.

This post does pretty well to sum up pure ignorance to anything sensible and you look like a stubborn child ranting along in this thread.

Sure, the last few years aren't ideal, but dude, you would swear we just came off a season like the columbus bluejackets had last season with a team full of 35+ year olds.

Get a clue

And this is why the rankings are garbage:
MOntreal ranked #2 overall in 2007:
Top Five Prospects: Carey Price (G), Andrei Kostitsyn (LW), Kyle Chipchura (C), Mikhail Grabovski (LW), David Fischer (D)

Even with Price how the hell is that group #2 in the League?

The key is, do we have an old team where we desperately need prospects now? No. We have a young team with many hitting their primes or close to it.

We added Rielly and Finn. We are stacked on defense for years to come.

We'll be adding another high draft pick next June.

Just because Gardiner isn't on the list anymore and that hurts our rankings mean nothing because we have him ion the Leafs and he's 22.

The rankings are bad news to a team like Calgary more.

Easy to say in hindsight. In the 2007-08 season Andrei Kostitsyn had 26 goals and 27 assists in his first full NHL season. It was quite reasonable before and after that season to see him as a budding star.

It is hindsight but at the same time it shows how so many prospects don't turn out. That's why the rankings only mean so much and isn't worth getting so upset over.

looks like they got a whole bunch of them spot on.

several cup winners and perennial contenders.

20th overall: Anaheim Eventual Cup winners in 2007
21st overall: Vancouver, perennial top team and one SC final appearance since then
22nd overall: San Jose, Perennial top team since 2007
24th overall: Pittsburgh, Perennial top team and cup winner
26th overall: Ottawa, SC final since then
28th overall: New Jersey, perennial playoff team, SC final
30th overall: Carolina, usually in the mix with a couple playoff runs

Ya, wouldn't want to be in the 20-30 range in this ranking, means we are doomed.....:sarcasm:

It would be interesting to have a run-down of all the prospects various NHL teams gave up on only to see them thrive elsewhere and burn their former team.

Take a wild guess where they had these guys ranked:

Top Five Prospects: Loui Eriksson (RW), Matt Niskanen (D), Perttu Lindgren (C), James Neal (C), Niklas Grossman (D)

4 NHL regulars, one 30 goal 70pt, and one 40goal 80pt scorer.

answer: they were ranked 27th out of 30 teams.

Again, easy to say in hindsight. Show me all the people who predicted in 07 that neal would score 40 and Eriksson would score 36? We're talking about players that every team in the NHL passed on in the first round of their draft.

Those are the same types of players that if they had been drafted by Detroit they would have been ranked 3rd in the league.

I am putting no stock in these rankings whatsoever.

Not defending that rankings were garbage but the Habs prospect pools had depth. The article was written in May 2007. This was the top 20 article written in February 2007:

Say what you wish about the Kostitsyns, but they have produced like top 6 forwards in the seasons following the ranking. In fact, more than half of the top 20 are/were full time NHLers at one point.

This was the top 20 article written in August 2007:

Nobody's rankings are so good that you can look back on them 5 years later and marvel at how right they were. And that's not really the purpose.

Also, I don't think your point is valid. I imagine if you look up their rankings from back when Datsyuk and Zetterberg were prospect that you wont find them raving about those two.

I love how Grabo moved 7 down spots in the August article, compared to the earlier link.
Still my argument/shock was how that group was ranked #2. Your link was after the one I quoted earlier. So it has no bearing on it.

OFcourse not. Datysuk and Zetterberg are the reason why Detriot gets drooled over now.
BUt as for my point.
Just look at Nyquist. He produces at about the same rate as Kadri. Is older than Kadri. He is the #2 prospect and a big reason why Detroit is ranked #10.

Kadri is our 2nd best prospect a good margin behind our best, and our team is ranked 20th.

Our guys are just not given any respect. I love how RNH is still on the Oilers prospect list but Gardiner is not on ours. They both played the entire year in NHL.

Actually Gardiner went down for a refresh for 4-5 games mid-season, so he has actually been in the NHL for less time.

But injuries make you a prospect still apparently. Yep, the ranking systems are foolproof. :sarcasm:

You must be joking? These teams were already in the upper echelon of teams to begin with, obviously they will have good seasons if there actual teams are good. The players helping these teams were already in the NHL. That was a reason for their success, not there lowly rated prospect pools.

The difference is the leafs are not at the level those teams were at that time. They were able to ice more competitive NHL teams, while having lowly rated prospects.

RNH is a lot younger and still a prospect....he still can play Jr Next year as a 20 year old, so he is a prospect.....not really all that hard to understand.

Not hard to understand at all.

The Leafs Prospects are all crap while teams like Detroit draft nothing but future all-stars.

Our Forward Prospects are weak period at this time.

Kadri and Fratin are going to be an NHL player.....the same can not be said for Colboune or Ashton yet they are among our top forward prospects. We have an abundance of 3rd/4th line forward prospects...no amount of feet stomping or wishful thinking is going to change this. Could there be a surprise in the bunch.....yes, but these rankings are based on more then wishes and hopeful surprises.
