half of the these teams in our division are already playoff teams and the rest are closer and have better prospects as well.

how the hell did they manage to get those prospects while being a competitive playoff team while the Leafs are always one of the worst teams in the league?

Ohhhhh. Right. These teams have managers and coaches who know what the **** they are doing!!!

Well look on the bright side, if our Leafs didn't finish 5th last overall last year and draft Rielly and Finn we would be in even a worse position with a weaker prospect pool than 20th overall.

So its not all bad. Our on ice struggles are improving the prospect pool and the potential future results.

True but at this pace its gonna take a few more years of being the worst team in the league to match the quality of some of the top teams prospects in the league right now.

And then they have the head start of actually being a GOOD TEAM and having the development of their prospects in that time.

This team is soo behind the eight ball and it's all management's fault.

They need to be fired immediately. There can be no forgiving such **** management and ineptitude.

Wilson was picked 16th overall in the recent draft and is looking great so far so tell me why he doesn't have elite potential. I'm guessing you think it's a laughable list because your beloved leafs didn't get 1st place.

DET is still riding the Zetterburg/Datsyuk scouting history well into their 30's. That's a bit much. I wouldn't trade their pool for ours if they threw in a couple 1sts to boot. Their best prospects are 23y/o, and their younger ones like Tatar and Jurco are long shots, IMO.

Every scouting publication tells you the same information too.

Montreal has better prospects than Toronto.

For every good prospect you seem to think Toronto has Montreal has that and more, so please don't take your own opinion too seriously because there are way better hockey people making the judgments on prospects than some poster on hfboards.com.

Looks pretty far from perfect, and more like a 50-50 thing to me. Probably even worse if you exclude the no-brainer top prospects.

It is disappointing to be ranked as low as we are, especially considering where we've finished these last few years. We should be top 10 easy after 7 years of no playoffs and 5 straight bottom 10 finishes. It's no secret that management has not been great at asset management.

That said, I think there is some reason to be optimistic. The team has one of the best collection of defense prospects in the league, between the likes of Rielly, Percy, Finn, and Blacker, along with darkhorses like Nilsson, Loov, and Granberg. This is in addition to Phaneuf (all of 27 years old), Gunnarsson (26), Gardiner (22), Ranger (28), Franson (25), and Holzer (24).

What hurt us is the complete lack of offense talent. All of our prospects with top-6 potential have been slow developing and have major question marks. Kadri, Colborne, Ashton?, Biggs?. Without a top forward prospect in sight, it is difficult to consider our prospect pool anywhere near the top of the league. Fortunately, we do have a solid group who do have the potential to be excellent depth players. The likes of Josh Leivo, David Broll, Brad Ross. The bottom 6 could look very good in a few years.

There's also a lack of high-end goalie prospects but I don't see anything to be too concerned about. Goalies are hard to judge. How many starters in the league today were signed out of Europe or drafted in the latter rounds? Ryan Miller, Henrik Lundqvist, Pekka Rinne, were all picked outside of the first two rounds. There may be no Markstrom in our system but Owuya has solid potential, Sparks seems to have solid potential, and Reimer (though no longer considered a prospect) certainly has solid potential.
