I'd say the 4 big big priorities are Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Dubas.

With all the work needing to be done, I think Dubas gets extended VERY soon.

and leave his boy Keefe ?

DOUBT it.

That would be an interesting move.

I think they've already worked out a deal, but didn't want to announce it until it was politically correct (after the playoffs).

I think a new GM will have MAJOR problems making deals with Matthews, Marner and Nylander. letting Dubas go would be potentially triggering a rebuild.

When it comes to the core of this team, a rebuild is exactly what is needed. How many times can you change the supporting cast and come out with squat, before you turn to the “core” of the problem?

Coach Keefe has a contract for next year
low priority / offseason
GM Dubas - no contract for next year (5 year contract ended)
URGENT. I think he needs a 2 year deal today so he can get to work.

President Shanahan - has a contract for next year.
low priority. I'll fire Dubas and Shanny together when the day comes. I'd pink slip him.

mini rebuild is AT a MINIMUM, moving Marner or Matthews. which one are you moving ?
full rebuild is trying to dump anyone over 6 AAV.

Soft playmaker sure. Get a wing that will take a hit to make the play instead. Puck just needs to find Matthews stick. Now Matthews just need to commit to staying here, it's the only way. Not a good idea to let one of the best goal scorers of all time to just walk without an attempt to keep him.

IN this division it isn't easy. The Red Wings have been " re-building " eight years now. I'd rather tinker another year, maybe two before blowing it up and re-building.
Maybe the 8th time will be the charm. I know it will suck to rebuild again but the goal is the cup. Making the playoffs each year and hoping they finally show up is not the answer

It is not like he brought his boy Keefe in on day 1 either. He gave Babcock a full year and a bit before turning to Keefe... And Keefe would have easily had a job elsewhere if he wasn't a HC here.

Depends how much he wants power and autonomy. We can't offer him that unless Shanny is fired, and given there are a few contradictions between his actions and words, I would not be surprised if he has been undermined more than a few times in his tenure. Maybe he doesn't want that.

We also do not know how much Shanny's words have impacted his ability to do his job. Remember it was Shanny, and not Dubas, who talked about discounts for the stars. Dubas just said he would get them signed no matter what and that they are not in the business of trading good young players.

There does seem to be a rift between the two and the common perception until now was that Shanny likely wouldn't offer Dubas another deal if things went poorly... When it could just as easily be that Dubas won't take any realistic offer that Shanny gives him and he wants to change things up.

I understand that. I don't think were that far away. This years playoffs were weird to me. The Bolts are supposed to have the best goalie in the world. He's not the best goalie in Florida at the moment. Then we play Florida they have Bob probably the worst goalie contract in hockey. All of a sudden he lives up to it??
The word tinker is scary, I get that. But this team has talent other teams will pay for. The term " gud pro " was mocked here for years. We need more gud pros. Not goons. Guys who won't back down. That initiate not retaliate. Knies, woll, maybe Roberston we have young talent. Don't blow it up. Yet.

They tried that this year at the deadline. Having "gud pros" in the bottom 6 only takes you so far. You need the top guys doing that as well. They continue to show that they don't have it.

Why not build around Knies Robertson and Woll. IMO this was their last chance and they showed once again they don't have what it takes.

MLSE cannot wait around. They need to let the axe fall and quickly, so that we can get new management in here to deal with the AM / Marner situation. Too many times over the years, this organization reacts to an issue far too late and it costs us dearly. This would be another example of that.

if they want dubas back so be it .i guarantee u larry tannenbaum will make sure dubas has limited atonomy on certain decisions
its hard to say but so,mething smells of running this thing back and just tell the fans how priveledged they are that they are leafs nation

Matthews and Marner will be chasing heavy raises once their deals are up. Neither of them is worth top dollar IMO.

If Matthews has no intention of being on the team long term, trade him. If he wants to stay but insists on league max, MLSE would be crazy to keep him. What if his wrist is messed for good? Management shouldn't take the risk.

There's always an excuse when these guys don't show. Their lackadaisical attitudes are difficult to take. This team needs a Matthew Tkachuk or Nathan MacKinnon, a player who puts it all on the line when the time comes.
