The trick with guys like Tom Wilson is you try to get them out of the draft or on their first contract or so...
Not after they're in UFA territory, paying more attention to their points, health, and trying to not fight and do the badass things that made them rare commodities in the first place...

Leafs need the next tom wilson, not the one who will be on the wrong side of 30 when his new, expensive contract begins.

It would be nice if the Dubas tenure produced even one of these types of players through the draft or free wallet. But it never happened.

His reputation would turn from a "good hard physical player who's not afraid to ride the line" to "dirty PoS who doesn't belong in the league anymore" inside 1 season. I'd bet money on it. And funny enough it'd be a lot of this fanbase leading the charge on that.

The refs being against the Leafs talk is embarrassing, every fanbase in North America thinks the refs are out to get them, really annoying how a lot of sports talk has been reduced to that, but to answer the question, Wilson would be an amazing fit for a team needing a little more playoff bite

I mean that's one move. You're moving soft talent for less soft talent. But the team needs muscle in the top 6. A Wilson type would be nice, not that there's many of them around.
Yeah i don't see the caps moving him, not this season. They're trying to make another go of it with Ovi.

This thread reminds me of how lucky we were to have Wendel Clark. A unique player with goal scoring skills who could hit/fight.

Actual Tom Wilson is most likely going to follow the Lucic path in real short order. Guys like that do not produce worth their salaries into their 30s.

The trick is to draft and develop a Tom Wilson. I think they tried that with Tyler Biggs and it failed so miserably that they never tried ever again.

They had a Wilson-lite with more scoring punch in Marchment...but he was traded for skill that couldn't skill in Malgin.

The problem with Wilson is that he's got one year left on his contract and given his reputation the price will likely be insane.
I just don't think we necessarily need him. Having a guy like him in your top six is nice but this team has plenty of skill. A guy like Hathaway on the 4th line gives us the part we need without the price.

The whole point is having a guy like Wilson that can play in the top 6.
If he's too pricey, let him walk as UFA.
