Leafs need to get more physical and not just fighting

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. This is why I think under Dubas and Maybe Keefe we will never get that physicality. Clearly Parros has a bias towards the leafs, whether he’ll admit it or not. But he holds the Orr situation against them. It’s been proven multiple times. There’s no consistency between DPOS decisions. It’s all arbitrary.

Clearly the message from Management has been to not engage because it is going to hurt us (suspensions, our guys getting the extra penalty) rather than help us. Unfortunately though I think this is the wrong message. IMO the messaging should be, f***/screw the NHL we are gonna be physical and engage in scrums and if we get punished so be it, but more teams will think twice about messing with us. That should have been the response, not disengaging. Unfortunate, but I don’t think the mindset changes with the team unless it changes up top with management.

I've pointed this out before but I think it bears repeating to those who say we should start punching guys in the face and doing dirty stuff after whistles like Boston. Here's why that won't work: Boston (and to a lesser extent Tampa, and a few other selected AMERICAN teams) get away with it because the refs look the other way (for whatever reason. I have my theory. Others have theirs). If we start playing that same style, its going to be a steady stream of players to the box. I know this sounds like the standard "the league has it in for us, Team X gets preferential treatment," ad infinitum. But the evidence consistently bears it out. Keller cross checks a guy...its a fine. Matthews does same thing...two games. And the list goes on and on. Our guys get hacked, slashed, cross checked, DRAW BLOOD FFS...and the NHL does NOTHING. We retalitate? Spezza...6 games. Kadri...multiple games over multiple seasons. Kerfoot...2 games...AM...2 games. Engvall...ENGVALL for the love of god...who's bucking for the Inge Hammerstrom "goes into the corner with a dozen eggs in his pocket and comes out with none broken" award....gets a game. Not to mention the 100 thousand the team got fined for leaving an hour and half early over the holidays to beat a snowstorm. The bottom line is...we can't stoop to others team's levels. Not because we're not big enough, or physical enough...but because if we start to play over the edge, we're gonna play the whole game a man (or more) down. It's just the way it is. For whatever reason, the NHL and Gary are harder on our players, more vigilant of what they do on the ice, and absolutely dish out way harsher punishments than they do to the rest of the league. That's not a conspiracy theory. The stats are there and bear it out 100 per cent. All this team can do is play through the crap, and do what it does best. Score goals, pray for solid goaltending and hope that's enough to offset the rest of it.
Gary B. wants to grow the game in the US where it does not really sell well overall (isnt the NHL behind like tractor pulling in terms of viewership?). For this reason he has the total backing of the board (big $$$ involved). Imho this is the major reason why he controls (or attempts to) the outcomes (Refs are definitely Not impartial and told what to do)so US based teams garner more fans. I have no doubt it'll be 2 US based teams in the Finals again.
This game is rigged....just like Soccer, the NBA etc etc....I read somewhere that professional sports are now considered entertainment and not "competitive sports" in the sense we know. Nothing else really makes sense....

During their little run, Tampa was usually near the top in pims. Boston is up there as well.

After Boston beat the Leafs one of those years they played Tampa. That’s when I noticed they were a different team. Rather than having guys pull up they attacked Boston’s D.

Since the 2016-17 Season which was Matthews, Marner, and Nylander rookie year, Toronto has ranked 28th in total power play time.

During that same time period Tampa has ranked 4th and Boston is 15th.

That is the style of hockey both teams play. Commit many penalties and only get called on a fraction of them; all while the officiating attempts to do their best to balance out the calls. It entirely screws the team not playing dirty and is a huge advantage to the dirty team across a series who will take on less injuries and bruises. Add to that, you're talking about teams with very good special teams.

You conveniently didn't mention the total calls in the actual series between both teams.

I wouldn’t say they are dirty, just aggressive. Their style causes them to take penalties, as well as draw penalties.

Who would be insane enough to continue watching a league if they thought it was fixed?

There are many books out there on exactly this. I own the books Rigged & Rigged II that only deal with Soccer. After reading them I lost interest in the sport altogether...like the WWF...rigged but still watched by millions!

I don't know about that. I certainly agree with having certain teams will spike the interests....but it is not that easy to rig the results, just too many people to be involve without any of them being a whistle blower. Then again, one can just look at all the games South Korea played in WC 2002 and see how refs can truly screw TEAMS to ensure one team make it to the next round.

Maybe the Leafs should be less physical?

Doesn't matter what we say. Watch the games and hope for the best, turn the game off and do something else.

Now if they go on a playoff run, get hyped have at it.

Everything is fine.

The WWE has entered the chat.
No clue why it seems like such a foreign concept to some of a professional sports league working towards their own best interest.

Corruption is inevitable with the amounts of money that are involved in these things. The people who disagree are probably the same ones who think there's no corrupt politicians in the 1st world.
