Those goals don’t happen often, but terrible goals like that have sneaked past even the great netminders. Relax people. The entire team sucked. Marner and Matthews continue to show me they shouldn’t be together.

Samsonov has that classic Deer Caught In Headlights Syndrome

Whenever he's scored on, he tenses up and freezes for a good 2 or 3 seconds, like he's shell shocked

Other times he'll look around himself in a panic like wft? how did that puck go in?

Either way, those are classic symptoms of a goalie who's defeated. Reimer used to do the same thing I remember. Worst is when a goalie slumps down on the ice after letting in a goal, it makes the defeat twice as hard and makes the goalie look that much softer. Samsonov does this too.

He's done. Add him to the Toskala/Bernier/Reimer/all the other guys who the city of Toronto thought would be their "next goalie" but flopped hard on their faces. We keep getting these types of goalies, one after the other

Any decent play he gave them tonight means NOTHING after that 3rd.

That's not a goal an NHL caliber goalie let's in.
The leafs should have won 2-1

Jones let 1 bad goal in

The defense was terrible and cost Jones 2 goals

No NHL contending defense lets so many 2 on 1s, odd man rushes like we did vs the Sens

Shorty goal, then they almost scored another shorty as Giroux stole the puck and had a breakaway coming in alone

He had no chance on goals 1 and 2. The defense was no where to be found on either of those goals and let Ottawa get back into the game

The RAYCROFT/RASK trade killed all of our goalie acquisition momentum. It's been dead mostly since. Our only hope is Woll, which might not work if he is injury prone.

There's one of the best goalies of all time giving up a sharp angle goal. He was even set. Jones had literally just recovered from the original shot that went wide, when the rebound was fired at him from a weird angle. He didn't even have time to get set.

Weird bounces happen. There was nothing wrong with Jones' play last night.

We lost because the players decided to show up for 20 minutes last night

Exactly. But you can’t rationalize with that poster. In fact they will call you out for your common sense. Lol. Oh well at least most of us understand the issues with this team.

Yeah, I've seen plenty of bad goals this year throughout the NHL.

That was just another one.

Leafs at that point looked like a headless chicken anyway.
(For those who have never seen it, yes headless chickens do run down the street leaving a trail of blood in the snow.)

bad angle goals are very common , Mathews scored one from just above the red line while shooting from the side boards recently

Jones played well enough to allow us to win , the team just coasted after going up by 2 .

I agree. The third goal was bad but I don’t think Jones is ultimately responsible for the loss. He played well enough for us to easily win that game, we just didn’t want it apparently.

Our record vs bottom 5 teams this year must be abysmal.

My belief is it goes back to our scouting department and what they're looking for in terms of goalies, both at the pro and amateur levels. We seem to get a lot of these athletic, reflex goalie, battlers who aren't emotionally steady and will let adversity snowball out of control.

Pogge, Raycroft, Toskala, Gustavsson, Sparks, Campbell, Mrazek, Samsonov, lesser extent Reimer. Bernier was better technically but mentally brittle. Andersen was pretty solid, technically sound all things considered but not a big game goalie.

Weirdly enough we have Hannu Toivonen as Marlies goalie coach now. He was once the biggest thing in Finnish goaltending and a high Bruins pick in 2002. Flamed out as an NHL goalie, and Boston tried again with Tuukka Rask.

..that's the thing... the list above is are all the same kinds of goalies. None of those guys were any better or any worse than the next one, they just all sucked. They're all the same to me.

That's an insanely long list of mediocre-at-best goalies who were never any better than average. It's just one long list of watered-down, useless goalies we've had to endure ever since Ed Belfour was gone. They all sucked the life out of their teams, they all let in b.s. goals at the worst times, they all had confidence issues and on and on it went.

It's like 20 years now since this team has had a real goalie, Belfour was the last one and that's a hell of a long time ago.

It's madness how this team has never been able to sign a good goalie for decades now.

Fredrik Andersen is significantly better than ever other name listed.

I'd say Andersen was a pretty legit goalie for the most part but was bad in pressure moments. He was a Game 7 flop in Anaheim before even coming to the Leafs.

Bernier was more of a technical goalie than the rest. Maybe Raycroft was a bit more structured.

But all the rest of them are reflex battlers who probably caught someone's eye on the scramble, second and third effort with up and down emotional games and in the modern game it's just the wrong thing.

you might say he caused the least damage amongst them

every single one of them still flopped though.. not one of them stood out as a goalie we can remember like Potvin or Cujo or Belfour

it's just been 2 straight decades of no-name goalies, none of them better than average and all will be forgotten with time

I just feel his reaction is on the slow side. Can be the difference between a goal and big save. Last year the defence was bit more solid and healthier. This year Sammy not good enough to patch it over. Roll Jones win or lose for a bit until a better option materializes.

The better option has a real wonky ankle.
