Other than Binnington, name the last rookie goalie to win a cup as the starter? It's a very uncommon occurrence. Does this management team want to take that risk?
I dunno who the last one was and I don't care. If you want to know, feel free to look it up.

I have as much confidence in Woll as I've had in any of our goalies in the Matthews era. If you're saying going with a rookie is a bad idea so we should start looking for another starter, I think you're nuts.

Just the ones that won a cup
Murray
Cam Ward
Roy
Dryden

Aiden Hill until last yr wasn't that great then he wins a cup

I do seem to recall suggesting in the offseason that the Leafs should roll with Woll and a vet like Jones instead of paying Samsonov... and being ridiculed for the idea

To be fair, that take was with Sammy coming off of a fantastic year.

Bold prediction my friend, but right now looking like a solid one.

Might as well give Jones some rope.. underwhelming numbers last year but he still won 27 games in 48 starts getting Seattle into the playoffs. If he can win games while limiting the number of "bad" or "backbreaker" goals, that's all you can ask for right now.

He bad a good year.. for the first time in his career. And proceeded to drop back to below average where it mattered most, the playoffs.

If you only watch the Leafs and look at last year, then sure I'd get why one would think Samsonov was a stud. But if you watched the rest of the league you'd see that year was abnormal for him. The talent is there sure, but he's a mental midget. There's a reason Washington walked away from their former first rd pick despite him being an RFA.

So really, it wasn't that bold of a prediction when you look at the bigger picture.

Jones ain't a stud but he's a useful "good enough" goalie if there's a decent team in front of him. He looked great in LA and SJ when they were each a wagon. Then brutal in SJ and PHI when they were shit. It wasn't surprising to see him look serviceable when Seattle played well. There's far worse backups to have anyway.

Also worth noting that Hildeby appears to be taking the main job on the Marlies .. 11/20 games played, 1.82 GAA and a 0.929 SV%

If he continues to play well while Woll is injured and Sammy continues to struggle, you have to give him a shot.

Matt Murray twice, yes he was still considered a rookie both times he won.
Ultimately, I suspect this whole discussion is irrelevant. The leafs won't have any choice but to ride Woll in the playoffs and hope it works. God knows he has the talent. But his knack for getting injured needs to be made a thing of the past.

He does get injured a lot which is another reason I'm not convinced they won't addresses it, especially if he comes back and gets injured again.

Realistically, there is no way to address it. The Leafs aren't going to trade for what they think might be a number one goalie, so Woll and Samsonov will be the pair. They won't keep Jones over samsonov.

There is always a way to address, another injury to Woll may not give them a choice.

Why not?

They obviously don't feel committed to Samsonov as they only signed him to a 1 year deal (and that's him coming off a strong season).

Does anyone here actually feel like they're going to re-sign Samsomov to a multi year deal after this season? Hell no... So why is it a forgone conclusion that when Woll comes back they will dump Jones in favor of woll?

I predict Sammy will be the one out of the mix by seasons end and i don't think that some crazy idea.

Could they wait until Jan 1, 2024 and then sign Jones to a 1-year extension at a slightly higher salary to discourage other teams from grabbing him off waivers?

Absolutely roll with Jones now. I don’t think there is any other option. Samsonov needs to be sent down like Campbell was. He is terrible, send him down and hope he gets claimed (Which I doubt he does).

I don't think he'll get claimed.

But we could waive him and have him try and get his game back in the AHL as you mentioned.

Sammy needs games, but he's actively hurting the Leafs right now. Get him a stint with the Marlies.

Give the Hildebeast an NHL taste until Woll is back, or shop for another third stringer (market is tight right now though).

Leafs can carry all 3 for now. Gio gets off LTIR, send down Lajole.

Not to mention, I believe Jones is a emergency loan, so I don't think he needs waivers to go down

Fully agree, Samsonov is costing the team loses. Maybe a desperate team like Edmonton would claim him lol. I do believe that Jones is the guy that has to start until Woll returns. Give Jones the net for now and see how it goes.

Woll certainly looks to be the future #1 moving forward when healthy though.

I think Sammy's cap hit is high enough that he's solidly a negative asset right now.

Only way I see him moved is a deadline cap dump if he can't pick his game back up.

i can actually see samsonov as a candidate for a guy who gets claimed by a team like edmonton, and finds his game, magically.

It is possible da Leafs trade Sammy to a team like da Oilers for a guy like Kulak .. it could help out both teams .. not saying it will occur but Oilers need a better tender and our Leafs need help on our D
