For the Joe Casual Leafs fan.

Catching up on the latest Leafs news. Getting your fill of everything "must know" until the new year. There's only one thing to remember about this team right now.

The Leafs need a goaltender.

No offense to Samsonov and Woll. But we all know what we have with them. An injury prone and inconsistent duo.

The Leafs need to make upgrading on net a priority.

You'll come back in a couple weeks. Check the team's roster and see the exact same goalies there. Say to yourself "I'm a little worried about the goaltending again this year".

So are the rest of us, Joe Casual Leafs fan, so are the rest of us.
Ya. We need to find a starting goalie for free who never gets injured. I've been mulling over this situation for a while now, but THIS is the only resolution...

There aren't any. At least not an upgrade on Woll.

I'd guess: Allen, Blackwood, Gibson, Vejmelka, Martin.....

Yeah, no thanks.
Save %
Woll 14
Gibson 24
Allen 30
Blackwood 33
Vejmelka 42

Don't say the others would do better on our team because we have 2 ahl dman and Timmins playing

Behind our D Woll has been great

For those saying he is a rookie Binnington was as well and won a cup

With the saves that Woll made his last games iam not shocked he got injured.

The priority is defense so that doesn't happen again.

edmonton nj detroit carolina amount team who clearly need goaltending help... but who is really available?

Jake Allen?
Gibson or binnington? are they really available? not sure and if they are, leafs will need to pay for it, dont think you will get gibson dor a 2nd or 3rd pick... will start with 1st+

leafs are better to keep those asset to raise the D and giving up every help you can to Woll to get the job done, right now its probably the best thing leafs can do

andersen did it too at time
He didn't though. These are the games he played where we had a chance to win the series:
Game 7 against 2018 Boston: -3.71 GSAx
Game 6 against 2019 Boston: +0.23 GSAx
Game 7 against 2019 Boston: +0.18 GSAx
Game 5 against 2020 Columbus: -0.55 GSAx

I recall Gibson's agent said he had absolutely no interest in coming to the Leafs a few years back before we brought in Murray and Sammy.
Really? I thought he actually wanted to be a Leaf?

NVM. Damn he brutally rejected the Leafs haha.

Samsonov just needs to be sent down. Unacceptable play. Actively detrimental to the team and anti-clutch.
8th-worst goals saved above expected, 7th-worst WAR, 6th-worst sv% on LOW DANGER SHOTS.

Gibson has been awful for YEARS at this point (hasn't had a good season since 2019) and he's got a 6.4 mil caphit for THREE more seasons. Will never understand why anyone is interested in that.

Leafs will likely just keep rolling with what they have and bank on Samsonov eventually figuring things out. If they were to make a move, I'd expect it would be more for a 1B type to safely eat up a few games to give Woll some breathing room, but don't think that's going to happen

I have said it before, and I will say it again, with Samsonov in goal it is absolutely terrifying to watch. That one goal last night where the puck bounced off his head and then he scored on himself between his own legs was just embarrassing. He needs to be put on waivers. No Way he is getting claimed, but they really need to get him out of the locker room and off the team.

In 12 games Samsonov started, we'll the players have their asses puckered every time the leafs give up even a marginal scoring chance
My guess he's hurt and not telling anyone
He looked like a mannequin on a couple goals

I hate to say this, but Sammy shouldn't be firmly in the backup role with Jones right there. Jones should be given a shot at taking that role.

and anaheim had been the worst defensive team last 5 year....

tampa playing really poorly defensivly this season and even Vasilevskiy (whos the best actual goalie in the world) was unable to look good. Was the same thing with Price with Montreal. 1 goalie cant replace the entire team defensivly.

or just lost his confidence and thinking too much. As goalie if you hesitate half of second, the puck is behind you

I was skeptical heading into the season with Samsonov being the de fecto #1, even after many pointed out how great his stats were last year. But this is beyond what I expected. He's not fundamentally sound, nor can you rely on him to make a big save. Add the Leafs to the mix of teams who have to outscore their opponents most nights because their goalie is just not up to par.

Here's we go...

I'm sure he was only one who had bad game in there...

No, he's not the only one to have a bad game. I'm not the one that isolated him, and in fact, my initial post literally noted that he wasn't alone. But fact remains that he didn't have a dominant performance in a game where we could have clinched a series - which was what was being discussed.

Samsonov was the worse goalie on the ice in every game of the playoffs last year, despite Vasilevski being pretty terrible too. Leafs won that series despite his performance not because he helped it.

His poor play in the postseason has also continued into this season. I was all for Samsonov for a long while but he's proven now he's next Raycroft or Toskala. Leafs have to move on ASAP.

Although he was good in Game 6.

Sometimes I like to torture myself and go back and watch the highlights of old playoff games. The Tampa ones are fine to watch cause we won, but yeah, a lot of games in that series you watch him in net and it makes me remember how nervous I felt.

Effectively, putting most of the blame on him.

It should be noted that in his last two elimination games vs. Bruins '19 and CBJ '20 the team scored a gran total of one goal between those games. He also won 3 elimination games even though they weren't series clinching. 2 in 2018 and 1 '20.

And we have Hildeby give him a couple of games if we lose 2 or 3 games in a row because of bad goaltending.
