Leafs need a stud D to win a cup. Who is traded for one?

I’d rather try to pry Saros out of Nashville so we finally have a top 5 goalie.

Samsonov + Robertson + 1st as a baseline.

I really hope this is wrong but I've got this feeling that Klingberg's presence is going to be disruptive to Morgan Rielly and Morgan Rielly alone. The same Morgan Rielly who pretty clearly poured his entire heart into last playoffs.
Not sure why people keep saying this. I’m sure Reilly is ok with the team adding any good players they can to make the team better.

The more I think about it, I think that a very good D-man is the ONE thing most needed by this team. "Stud" is taking it a bit too far, but great #3-4 at least. Basically a guy who is experienced...doesn't have to be great anywhere but have no weakness to his game. Someone who can log 20 or more minutes in a playoff game and not hurt you.
You have a first rounder next year. Target some guys, let those teams know your first is available. The sooner you get the guy, the better.

Brodie's contract is yuch.

Largest payment at age 33?

$7.5mm real dollars.

Would have been nice if it wasn't so stinky, maybe use him and pick and prospect for top 4 defender with some good years in front of them.

I’m just having trouble figuring out which good d-men around would be available. Tanev has been mentioned but Calgary would have to be way out to consider trading him and health/age concerns are still there. Keep waiting for an out of nowhere Muzzin type trade. Ekholm would have been perfect.

We probably could have resigned Ekholm and had no need for Klingberg.

I think an Ekholm type acquisition coupled with a Brodie deletion or something like that to balance out cap is what we need most. You want the workhorse, do everything, transform the blueline and come in a 6'4" defensive lead dog kind of role. Even an Adam Larsson could have some big transformative qualities to this team.

The price Edmonton paid for Ekholm was not dissimilar to what we paid for McCabe and Lafferty. Only difference is we couldn't absorb the cap hit while keeping "key" personnel like Alex Kerfoot.

I suspect if we need a bigger ticket D and cap is in the way, Klingberg could go out the door to balance it all out.

Yeah we need to renovate the Brodie position.

I've been saying this for years, this team needs a #1D man to bump everyone down a spot on the depth chart. Guys like Muzzin, Brodie, McCabe, Klingberg are good players. But not once has this organization identified and brought in a truly elite #1D thats needed to win the cup. I love Rielly, but you need a much better group around him if he's going to be your #1D of a cup winner. The points he gets are great, but he's just not in that top tier of guys who can play in all situations.

Pietrangelo was a huge miss by the previous administration if the rumours of him wanting to come to Toronto were true. Hell, a large chunk of the fanbase said he was washed up and that contract would be a disaster. Yet there he was, for the 2nd time in his career a cup champion as the #1D on his team.

I've been saying this for a while.

Brodie can turn from an asset into a liability really quickly, and it looks like it's already started.

We need to move on from him as soon as possible, while he still has some trade value. It immediately frees up $5m in cap space and gives us back some kind of asset for a player who is a UFA who we have no intention of keeping.

If Brodie stays, based on how he played from last playoffs against Florida, I can see him easily becoming the new Holl for this season. Keeping him is a squandered opportunity to add to our team now and for the long-term.

It's not even a matter of "Who" is traded for one on the Leafs. There are 0 "Stud Ds" available. That's your issue.

And even if there was, we have nothing to offer in return that's valuable enough to land a Stud D. If Marner could be traded there might be something to discuss but his NMC puts an end to that.

Well we definitely had assets for what Erik Karlsson just went for. I really have no other examples as they are never moved.

Sounds like a repeat of the Pietrangelo conversation when I suggested the Leafs sign him
If Doughty had as much game as Pietro had left I'd be all for it. But he doesn't.
