Leafs need a stud D to win a cup. Who is traded for one?

Pittsburgh Penguins won a Cup without any significant d-men on their roster in 2016, as much as it would be nice if TO could find a true #1 d-man it's not essential.

We need another dman our organization is thin at that position prospect wise and Gio and Brodie are fading fast. We always refuse to look ahead. Pitts had Fleury in net, we have SAMsonov. You are throwing dice at a bad bet with a team that has a history of losing. Pure hopium. This team will not get far in the playoffs, Nylander will walk for free and another era ends as the team implodes. It's the Leafs, they never win and you know that. The only thing they do well is lose.

Brodie was hurt last year and didn’t get back on track, my guess he was still hurt. Beyond that stint I see no evidence he’s fading. I don’t think Brodie is a concern at this point unless he becomes one. I’d have explored moving him if we were getting a younger version of him, but I still think Brodie is valuable to us.

Gio is what he is. He can help, but needs to be load managed. At $800k though his salary reflects all this. I doubt we heavily rely on him this year after how his game fell off last year in the back half

Why are you so insistent that "Nylander will walk for free"?

When you can't score more, let less in. That whole top 4 model has been debunked. It never worked. We need balance or we win zip. TB will be back refreshed and hungry again and we are looking at another early exit and Nylander walking for squat.

I wouldn’t count Tampa out entirely with their core, but their time has more than likely passed. They didn’t lose last year because of being tired or short summers as the media likes to pretend. Players who finish playing in June are not still fatigued 2 months later when the new season begins. They haven’t been as good because their roster has taken a massive step backwards at basically every position. Such is the cost of winning 2 cups.

A couple of questions here.
Does the returning Dman hit hard?
Does he block shots?
Does he clear out the front of the net?
Does he administer the occasional face rub?
Does he protect our goalie?
Is he a fluid skater?
If he can do 4 out of five, let's get him.
If not, convert Ryan Reaves to a D man and let's rock..

We always refuse to look ahead.... and yet, we've added a D man to the prospect system every year, except one for a decade.

You point to Gio and Brodie as fading fast.. yet neither guy was drafted by us... so you know, there are other ways to obtain players...

Pittsburgh's last cup was won with Murray in net... let that sink in for a minute.

Nylander will walk for free.... The sky isn't falling, and your projection isn't based upon reality.

Doesn't need to be a stud. Corps just needs to NOT be the pile of zero skill + zero grit super combo Dubas gifted us.

The issue is and has always been they're highly coveted and for good reason. Every laughed at hall for larsson and god knows I wouldn't have had the balls to do the deal but a rhd who is young and plays 20 plus min a night who can skate and defend is pretty rare. If you have one you're not moving him unless you get something really good.

To get a legit under 26 year old top pairing D man we either have to draft one, bet on a kid in a trade, fleece a gm, or more likely than the other things I laid out move players and picks we don't want to. Our best option is wait and see throughout the season who falls apart and kick tires. Even then we ain't gettin a young stud top pairing D.

Coming off a playoff run where we average 2 goals in the final 7 games and didn't allow a team to score more than 3 goals in 10/12 games (Game 1 vs Tampa, Game 3 vs Tampa). The remaining 4 goal games were empty netters.

This forum: WE NEED MORE DEFENSE.

It's like you guys think we are built like the Giguere Ducks and need to win all our games 1-0 or 2-1 in triple OT.

the better defender keeps the puck out of our zone and thus creates more offense ...we were pinned in too much with our soft D
what good is stacking the forward lines when the defense cant get the puck out of the zone, and the forwards have to come back and cover the front of the net or go battle for the puck in the corners?

we dont need 'more' defense, we need Better defense.
Just losing Holl made the defense better, he couldnt get the puck out of the zone to save his life

Am I the only one who watches hockey here?

Tampa hemmed us in our zone but Florida largely beat us on the rush. 80% of their goals on us came off a rush.

could the Leafs get the puck out of their zone? NO! ...and that ends an offensive shift, it doesnt matter if the other team scores if they keep our best players stuck in our end of the rink for their whole shift.

or, did you miss that part of the game when you were the only one watching hockey?

Vs Tampa no, Vs Florida yes.

You've constructed this narrative entirely in your head. That we lost because we suck at defense when we were averaging 2 goals. That is not good enough to win the Cup.

I'm probably the only guy in this thread who even realizes that.

Also if you think I that defense is such a pressing need: Bertuzzi, Domi, Klingberg are all notoriously bad defensive players. You should have been criticizing those moves a lot more if you properly understand how defense is played in the NHL.

TO needs a better 3rd and 4th lines, just being able to play defense, only, isn't what productive lines do to help win in the playoffs.

Players like Jarkrok, Kampf, Reaves, Lafferty, Holmberg and Gambrell are all the same types of players in that there's a definite lack of talent and TO has needed more offensively capable players in the bottom two lines for when the top 2 lines run dry as they have in the last 6 years in the playoffs.

On top of these anemic bottom 6 forwards TO has had and indications are that it will continue, TO has had a significant talent void on the defense, the d has been reasonable defensively but outside of Rielly there hasn't been any true support for the offense from the d, this has been successful during the regular season but it a true and constant problem TO hasn't addressed in the Matthews era.

I thought trading for Gustafsson was an attempt to address some of TO's issues with playoffs offense but he was benched and TO had predictable results.

TO might not be as sound defensively this year but it might be more balanced which could give us greater hope for success.

There is nothing in the prospect

There is nothing in the pool defense wise.

I really hope this is wrong but I've got this feeling that Klingberg's presence is going to be disruptive to Morgan Rielly and Morgan Rielly alone. The same Morgan Rielly who pretty clearly poured his entire heart into last playoffs.
