Post-Game Talk: Leafs lose to Florida 3-2

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

The game had a playoff feel and they were about as good as one could have expected. Domi was noticeable, Matthews and Nylander floated around couldn’t do much, and Mitch wasn’t allowed to play.

Marner should be riding pine for his performances lately.

He's had a few stinkers during this stretch. Coach needs to send a message about accountability. Sitting the greatest hockey player since Wayne Gretzky for a game would get it across loud and clear.

If Mitchy doesnt like it, who cares, he's gone in the offseason anyway.

How many years have we been saying this now? I get why a lot of fans are frustrated.
We’re all frustrated and changes have to be made if we don’t go on a long run. Unfortunately it’s going to be Marner that is going to be sacrificed based on his contractual situation. In reality, it should be Matthews that should be jettisoned. He’s a great scorer, but his inconsistent seasons, lack of consistent effort every game, short contract term (which may turn out to be a blessing) and injury problems are reasons to move on. He’s the highest paid player in the league who isn’t even a top 10 player anymore.

With 17 games to go, Toronto still has a chance to win the division, tinker with the lines, inject Cowan into the line-up, have everyone healthy. A new season is coming.

Leafs win tonight, Habs beat the Panthers and the sun comes up again tomorrow.

I'd take my chances with a $13.25m unicorn over a small, soft, scoring challenged play making winger who disappears when the going gets tough and wants $14m to stay. Can't win with him making $14m along with two other guys who can't get it done making close to $25m.

One of them has to go, but I think you've got the wrong guy if you think it's Marner. Believe me, I've been frustrated with him as well, especially during the playoffs (I would have shot him to the moon after the Montreal debacle), but he does offer more during the regular season as a penalty killer, playmaker, and point producer than Matthews. In fact, I think Marner plays better without Matthews as indicated by his game when Matthews is injured. I agree with you that there is no way we should pay him more than 12.5 million but then again, I don't think your unicorn is worth $13.25 million.

Da issue in da playoff type games are always da same .. lack of foot speed and grit from Matty and Mitch .. Willy played ok .. JT played better than I expected .. Rielly looked like he was a lost puppy struggling to figure out what to do .. Benoit got overwhelmed with speed .. Laughton looked like he didn't belong on that ice surface .. but bottom line we don't have enough sustained grit like forecheckers and we don't dig down deep enough on backcheck either .. and lastly we lose too many puck battles where it comes down to who wants it more .. Berube can't teach those things .. hockey players either have it or they don't .. and our core doesn't have it .. and they never will .. like i said we will only win if our D plays shutdown hockey and our tender plays light out hockey .. we need to win 2-1 games bottom line .. Rielly and Laughton need to come out of da lineup and get perpetually sick in playoffs .. Rielly on;y plays if we get tampa

Marner is an expensive Johnny Hockey (RIP). He is not a game in and game out game breaker like McDavid, Draisaitl, MacKinnon, Pastrnak, Kaprizov, Kutcherov, Matthews. Hell even Nylander when he wants to be. Yes, I included Matthews because he has been a game breaker until this year and it is very likely he is not 100% and why he is having a down year (still has more goals than Marner).

You do not keep a 20 goal scorer over a guy who can score 50 in his sleep. 100% Leafs agree and why they were happy to move Marner for Rantanen.

In what was a preview to a potential playoff series, did anyone catch how EFFECTIVE a player like Sam Bennett was in a hard hitting tighter checking game. ?

Bennett is such a warrior.

Most Leafs stars were invisible particularly Matthews and Marner.

Perimeter core except for JT , this is why we never win in the playoffs.
Knies didn't have a good game.

We need him to come home Sam

We have to move forward spreading the wealth around

its a great opportunity to restructure the cap allocation and finally make a team to WIN

but treliving throwing a 1st rounder for laughton is something that has me scratching my head really.... so a little scared what he would do with the cap even if I want him to not re-sign marner and tavares

all the negative Nancys show up yet again. They played a good game, hopefully they will learn. If they don't I think serious changes will be made, to what end I don't know.

But I do remember that glorious day back in '67.
Did someone need to learn a lesson today???! We have just the man for the job.

We're not a very good team. Routinely out chanced, out shot, out worked etc. The difference between us and Florida is massive and our only hope is our goaltending gets scorching hot

Auston Matthews being paid 13.25 to disappear every 2 seasons is insane

Treliving didn't want to give up Matthew Knies which is f***ing insane

The guy shooting 24% on a line with 2 elite forwards couldn't be moved for a 100 point, playoff beast

Hell no Knies for Rantanen is a classic trade that haunts the Leafs for decades
