Hockey is a tough game. You can get injured in any number of ways.
Should he stop driving the net, block shots, etc?

I personally feel its one of the biggest underlying issues with the Leafs core 4 overall and not just Matthews alone.. Other teams might appreciate their skill, but they don't fear playing them because they know their kryptonite ..

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going"... is a classic saying that when the situation becomes difficult, the strong will work harder to meet the challenge. However its more likely Leafs core 4 check out because of the physicality and are earning that reputation as an easy out in the playoffs because they're not willing to push-back and why management is pleading for "killer instinct" and are surrounding them with better/bigger/tougher teammates in hopes it instills a new degree of backbone in the Leafs top skilled players to check in and not check out when the going gets tough.

If I'm Shanahan, I make sure the NHL never assigns those 2 refs to officiate a leafs game again.

They are the same refs that officiated game 2 vs Boston

That is twice they lost control of a game and as a result players were injured and suspended.

This is needed from a player safety pov

What would've happened if Dubois did that to McDavid?

Maybe get suspended.

But you know how many penalties Matthews has drawn this year? None. Anti-Toronto bias is real. The team has to stop expecting the league/refs to do anything to protect them and find ways to exact punishment against the other team.

They don't need to add an enforcer but everyone needs to get meaner and learn how to goon it up from time to time, including Matthews.

McDavid would have stepped up for himself.

Lmao.

If I tell you how many times McDavid turtles I lost count. From his Bantam to Junior to Pro days.

You obviously have a bias for McDavid and I clearly understand that. Being a Toronto boy and best in the NHL.

But please answer factually if at all. McDavid is no different than Matthews. He turtles and would have done the same as Matthews did.

No, I think he'd find the overwhelming majority don't want Matthews throwing punches, and can clearly see that he stands up for himself plenty already, even if a vocal minority want to desperately try and make this a thing.
I think figure skating would be more to your liking.

Lot of weird messages saying Matthews needs to man up and become a goon and stand up for himself.

Wtf?

So because the refs are incompetent and let cheap shots go and clear mugging go, our players should change their game and become gutless pukes too?

How about Bettman and his incompetent referees learn how to really manage a game.

Giving both teams 5 power plays is not game management. 3rd rate league. What a joke.

Over the years Matthews has learned how to use his size. He's getting better at it. I never want him in a fight. He can only hurt his hand. Or fall and get injured somehow.

Dubois has a been a thorn in our side since his CBJ. In those days there wasn't a Leaf to step up to him and tell him it might be best to change his ways. Hopefully that message is passed next time these teams play.

Hey; we'll gladly take Ritchie off your hands.

Especially if that means more ice-time for Clifford and Simmonds. :naughty:

He 100% absolutely would not. He's smarter than that. The only difference would be Edmonton getting a PP and McDavid being praised.
I agree with you if he was up against a guy that can throw down, but it was DuBois. You can be certain Crosby would have.
You don’t even need to throw a punch to make it effective.

we should have guaranteed suspensions after that bullshit ruling like some said. if they would have called the knee it wouldnt have spiraled as bad. . would have preferred if someone 2 handed dubois right behind the knees for being a bitch and running and hiding... its time for the team to take this personally

Mathews needs to turn his smile upside down when being accosted and start feeding whoever it is. chariot dubois weber foligno or whoever cause they wont stop cause the refs let it go. so until he deters them it will always happen. i know some will say he shouldn't have too. but in todays game where the officials manage more then players he really doesn't have a choice beyond having it happen for the rest of his career.. maybe he has to cry to the media like mcdavid and oilers did. but for some reason our superstars and rookies can be targeted mobbed with out being penalized.

every other superstar has had to gain that respect from ov to sid they all had boiling points. but mathews just smiles its getting infuriating.

maybe we should set up a huge billboard in toronto that gives gary and the refing some unwanted attention and criticism

The best players in the world are not going to drop the mitts and fight in that kind of situation. They're smarter than that. The only difference is Crosby and McDavid get that call, and the refs would step in to protect them much faster instead of just standing to the side watching for 10 seconds.
