The best players in the world are not going to drop the mitts and fight in that kind of situation. They're smarter than that. The only difference is Crosby and McDavid get that call, and the refs would step in to protect them much faster instead of just standing to the side watching for 10 seconds.

After a Pittsburgh and Philadelphia playoffs series, Claude Giroux had to get two operations on both his wrists.

They asked him why he needed those operations?

He said that Sidney Crosby slashed him while they were taking faceoffs.

That is the kind of game they play in the NHL.

The weak do not survive.

Matthews seems weak.

Time to prove he is not weak.

Not that I miss the goonery of yesteryear, but I do wonder what a guy like Wendel would have done in a game like that. The dude saw red whenever someone tried to take liberties with the stars on his team.
Wendel would have spent 75% of the season suspended every year.

I feel like we watch different players, Crosby/McDavid are secretly dirty and it's documented. Hell, McDavid lost his cool and got a major last night. Crosby threw a guy into the boards a few weeks back and also has fights vs Giroux/Subban in the playoffs where they straight wrestle and slash

You don't always have to fight, Matthews is a superstar and I don't want him to. But, at a certain point you need to defend yourself

Was upset before, but loved the response by the team. Keefe putting Clifford for a faceoff shows he isn't letting the baby dirty Jets push us around like that. In my book, team showed a lot today.
Well done Leafs.

This is honestly pathetic by Maurice. Your team started the dirty stuff and it took one of our main d men.

Agreed.
Our team is finally starting to show some courage and fight and I love it.
I would have liked to see matthews stand up for himself a bit but I love the response from everyone else.
Something tells me matthews will handle that type of incident a little differently next time.
Just for Maurice, I hope we dress Gabriel next time we play them as well.

Found this clip of the 3rd period with Bowen and his pure homer announcing , hilariously awesome.. makes me want to try syncing it live

action starts around 7:20

Anything better than beating the Leafs? How about a Stanley Cup?
I'd take a bunch of consecutive regular season losses to the Bruins and Habs in exchange for a Cup.

Well you are in the minority if you want Matthews to continue to be abused. I for one would like him to punch one guy in the nose to show he won't take other team's crap.
No one wants to see Matthews fight a lot or even a little. But a few times in his career he needs to drop the gloves or at least get in scrums and face-wash some opponents.

All this league needs is to kick this Garry clown out of town.
The owners love him. He's leaving whenever he wants.

Not sure what Matthews you're watching, but the Matthews I watch is one of the strongest players in the league.

McDavid got a major for a rather weak hit (which is also not a fight), and this seems to have been forgotten in all of these attempts to create a Matthews controversy, but just a reminder for everybody that getting a major penalty is a bad thing for your team...

I don’t need Matthews to be a regular snap show, but use judgement when it comes to setting some ground rules how other players can treat you and your teammates. It’s about setting a tone that you can’t try to shut down the Leafs top skill players via intimidation. It’s more important than a power play here and there because we’re at the mercy of bad officiating anyway.

Have we figured out who they've earned respect from yet?

Maybe a fan or two. This team is a long way from giving out the sense that any transgression will be addressed on the spot. There are still too many times that a goalie gets bumped or poked and nothing happens. Most importantly there needs to be a deterrent against roughing up the Leafs' star players, that should be responded to with an angry swarm not some cross words shouted from the bench.

Matthews shouldnt fight ...he'd have to use his stick and break it across someone's legs instead.
he's coming off wrist surgery and his best skill is his shot, he shouldnt be damaging his hands and wrist (again) punching some goon/clown in the helmet.

Mackinnon isn't setting any ground rules, or changing how players treat him or his teammates. He's just throwing tantrums because he's a hothead. If anything, it invites more abuse against him and his teammates.

And I'm not sure what exactly you expected Matthews to do as he's being cross checked, jumped on, and choked from behind by somebody 6'2" and over 200 lbs. The second he had a chance to do anything about it, the linesman ran in to protect Dubois, and then Dubois was so scared that he took shifts off to cower on the bench.
You need to check your stats as you are wrong.
Tell that to Hockeyfights, who list one fight for him since early 2018.

Sucks for Jets fans that their season has peaked in early December. Have they announced the date for the banner raising?
