If he doesn't then we should expect more of this type of treatment.

Yesterday, that reminded me of this where if you don't stand up and push back, then the opposition will continue to abuse the situation and this will be the fallout.
He needs a bit more crazy for sure

Matthews is on the ice to score and draw penalties. That is his role. Is he big enough and tough enough to handle his own business? Probably. Should any Leaf fan want him to? Probably not. Last thing we want is for him to mess up a hand, finger or wrist (again) in a tussle that will do far more harm to this team then him knocking someone on his ass.

More of Chiarot looking like a weak, pathetic idiot; holding him from behind as Matthews laughs in his face and draws a penalty after crushing him into the boards? Okay.

Matthews stands up for himself plenty. Stupid players are going to be stupid against him no matter what he does, and the absolute last thing we want is Matthews in a fight so the best goal scorer in the world can mess up his wrist again.

Well you are in the minority if you want Matthews to continue to be abused. I for one would like him to punch one guy in the nose to show he won't take other team's crap.

It only takes 1 single moment like that..

History lesson opportunity here.. Flashback to 1973 .. The NHL was entering a phase when “goon hockey” was in ascendancy. Philadelphia’s “Broad Street Bullies” won back-to-back Stanley Cups with a mix of skill players and street brawlers. The Leafs had just brought in a pair of highly skilled Swedish players in Borje Salming and Hammarström as pioneers to Euro players in the NHL..

In fact, many North American-born players put the Swedish tandem through some agonizing and brutal hazing. They were labelled “Chicken Swedes” because they preferred skating, passing, and shooting to brawling. They were speared, hacked, and kicked a physically abused at every opportunity.

However, Borje Salming the silky smooth mild manner player, found himself in a fight with the Flyers’ toughest player and goon, Dave “the Hammer” Schultz. “It was a good start to take on the big guy!” Salming recalled.

From that moment on he earned the respect of so many players, and fans, and teammates that he extinguished all thought he was soft and scared as he went on to become one of the best Maple Leaf Dmen of all time.

I think you'll find you're in the overwhelming minority there.
You can't have the game dictated to you because you're scared of getting hurt.
Other players are able to stand up and give some back, they seemed to have survived it.

I bet Tampa, Pittsburgh, Edmonton and Colorado fans agree with Kuch, Crosby, McDavid and MacKinnon. But I bet they f***ing loved it when those guys grew some balls and thought "f*** this, I'm tired of being taken advantage of".

No, I think he'd find the overwhelming majority don't want Matthews throwing punches, and can clearly see that he stands up for himself plenty already, even if a vocal minority want to desperately try and make this a thing.

Agreed but getting ragdolled to the ice, horse collared etc can result in injuries too so I do think he kind of needs to send a message that he isn't a free target every time

Love the bad blood that carried over from the North Division. That was some good old time hockey last night.

The score aside, I think that was an important game for this team moving forward.

Hopefully Sandin's injury won't be the worst case scenario.

No one wants him to fight every night, send a message now and then.
Hockey is a tough game. You can get injured in any number of ways.
Should he stop driving the net, block shots, etc?

Ya I think he just needs to go beast mode and next time maybe just flatten Dubois with a nice clean hit. Let him look up to check the back of the jersey to see who got him and see Matthews name. Something like that

It’s really simple: Matthews is a big boy. You grab someone, you throw them down to the ice, you show them you are not weak and flatten them.

No punches thrown but message sent and received…..

Why did Gretzky and Lemieux have players like McSorley, Semenko, Tochett, Stevens, etc play shotgun on their lines? Was it so Gretz and Lemieux could fight their own battles? Not.

Listen in the end the push back the Leafs showed yesterday was awesome. The right players werent on the ice when what happened to Matthews occurred. But people took numbers and noticed. And pushed back.

Your team star players are not to be taken advantage of, I fully agree with everyone's thoughts. But no one should want Matthews, Marner or Nylander to drop the gloves. They can push back if they want, but the way those players push back is by putting the puck in the net. Maybe throw the body around a bit. But never dropping the gloves.

Sorry I dont agree with those on this board that say otherwise. Those same people will be crying the blues when they get hurt and are out long term. Is it really worth it? Not for me.

If he doesn't stand up for himself then he will get b*tch slapped around ice every night .. and on top of that sometimes and I have seen in many times a guy twists his ankle or knee getting wrestled to ice and lost a half season for doing nothing .. Dubois needs to be taught a serious lesson about who is his daddy .. I would have taken that f*ckin laugh and filled my stick down his throat to knock out his teeth and then rag dolled him and busted his jaw ... who cares get a 25 game suspension big deal it is only regular season hockey which means nothing
