You can’t make those blanket statements because you’re not even aware of the circumstances why the fights occurred even with YouTube provided. Mackinnon jumped in to fight because Byram, Girard and Makar were all recipients unprovoked in-game cheap shots by Wild, Shark and Coyotes players.
I am aware of the circumstances of why those three tussles occurred - I was referring to the other one you posted, where the only "offense" was Mackinnon taking a light hit, before he made himself look like a complete fool.
That said, notice how those 3 plays were almost identical? Almost like Mackinnon coming in and aggressively grabbing the sweaters (of sometimes not even the right person) doesn't do anything to prevent occurrences like that. In fact, that happening 3 times in a span of ~15 months seems quite a bit more often than average.
The only one making a blanket statement here is you; suggesting that being a hothead helps the team in some way, when there is absolutely zero evidence of that aspect of him providing any benefit.
I’m not avoiding the answering anything. I’ve said all along that Matthews should protect himself and deter others from taking cheap shots at him by being nasty in a defensive stance. If someone is trying to bully you, get sticks up, elbows out and punch back when being mauled.
Except Matthews was pushing back, and the team as a whole showed a ridiculous amount of pushback, and yet he's still getting heat from a small subsection of fans. You can't throw punches or get sticks up when a 6'2" 200+ lbs man is climbing on your back while you're on the ice, and as soon as Matthews got him off, the linesman came in to protect Dubois, and then Dubois cowered on the bench. So what
exactly was Matthews supposed to do here? Not vague comments like "being nasty in a defensive stance".
The whole “debate” we’re having stems from your statement that star players don’t fight.
Most superstars don't fight, except in extremely rare situations, and superstars shouldn't fight. Throwing punches at helmets when you have some of the most valuable hands in the league is a really stupid idea.
