Lagesson>Timmins too.
And it’s not even close…….

To get into the playoffs this year, sure, but long term they need a partner for Mo that can play 25 minutes in the playoffs. I don’t think they have that.
There’ll be no money to improve the D next year, just like there’s been no money to improve the D or G during the “half to the core four” era……..

One night in Buffalo, don't remember the exact date late 70's, I saw a line of Bobby Hull, Dave Keon and Gordie Howe play for the Hartford Whalers against the Sabres. They must have been close to 150 years in age combined.

Yup .. I'm old enough to have seen and remembered the last Leafs Stanley Cup in 1967.

Davey Keon was & is my first and all-time favourite Leaf player of all time. Tim Horton's wasn't a Doughnut shop he was a Dman of the defense of the Leafs Cup winning teams in the 1960's.

I've been waiting 56 years and counting for the next Leafs Stanley Cup.. :wg:

Heck this game yesterday wasn't even the worst beating the Leafs took in Buffalo. Check out this beauty from 1981. Never mind 9 goals against in a game how about a single period was the same score 9 goals to 3?

Proof that nobody's perfect - BJ was -5 that night.

Horton and Bower were my idols growing up, and still are.

That was the year that the dinosaur Punch Imlach traded Lanny, Sittler's best friend, to get back at Sittler, who wouldn't accept a trade. He also brought back ancient Carl Brewer to snitch on what was said in the dressing room. The goal was to break up the country club atmosphere Ballard thought existed at the time. Those who lived through that era of the Leafs can appreciate how good this team is and the stability of the organization now. The way Sittler was treated was a travesty.

They should have cap flexibility next year if they don’t mess it up. I still think Treliving will be replaced and a competent GM will take over.

My theory is they chock again this year Shanahan is toast, Tre become new president and a new GM and coach are hired……..

Not if they’re retaining Willy, he’s going to get paid a ridiculous amount…….

If Treliving is in charge they’ll be done. He’s actually worse than Dubas.

I understand Samsonov had a shitty game
But man the Leafs never stand up for their mates. Leafs should have shown a bit grit, a bit more fight for Sammy knowing what he's going through

Leafs just folded like cheap chair 3rd. Never seen a team who just gives up so easily, just plays for next game

You think Pat Burns or Quinn days, Leafs would have just given up? Leafs would have been terrified to have games like these all the time. Burns would have run them out of town

Just a pathetic showing

Not to be dramatic, but you can mark down tonight as the day the Leafs moved on from Sammy. It's just over for this year, you can't trust him right now and I don't see how he gets a net back short of b2b or emergency right now. It just can't happen. Won't be back next year.

Straight up, the Leafs were killing Buffalo, killing them. The shots were like 8-2 Sabres or something in the first at some point, and I'm looking at as "that's nice, the Leaf are killing them". All over them. Then a crappy goal, and answer, and a crappy goal, answer more, and eventually it just has no answer. They were winning that game and it just got given away with goals you gotta have saves on and that's it.

I don't usually over-react and beyond that I especially don't tend to get on goalies, and I've been hoping Sammy gets going, but that's gotta be it, sorry buddy.

AM's goal was a mic drop, wow.
Holy crap.... we were watching a different game.

Damn your a loyal fan in deed

The 80s leafs decade seems so painful.

Only 12-15 years from the 60s dynasty

Have a lot of taoent thst is mismanged or let go due to crappy ownership.

Many poor seasons, despite history of greatness.

The 90s leafs at least had 2 peak Gilmour teams and then Sundin ECF run in 99

80s, and 2006 - 2016 probably the lowest time to be a leaf fan

There are a few of us here who remember the Leafs winning the Cup at least once.

Four for me, although the ones from the early 60s are more memories of them winning than memories of the games.

Listening to the first period on the radio with my grandmother, then watching the rest on TV.
I wasnt a hockey fan when the leafs last won a playoff series, prior to last year. In 04 was around 5 years old haha

Crazy, that playoff series drought went as long as it did.

Hopefully with that out of the way, we can break the curse of 1967

I’m not convinced he can be the guy, but in Calgary ownership and luck of money was his downfall, here it will be whether Shanahan considers him just a puppet to his puppetmaster………

Some people won't listen, but Timmins is a disaster defensively. I mean Lebda-Holl-Berg mashed together don't equal how shit he is on defence. You can pull out stats that show he's had an ok game here and there but every game there is at least a few glaring giveaways and ill-advised forays into the offensive zone. I don't think that minus 4 includes the time he was on and we were scored on on the PK.

Love the effort here by Matthews to block the shot
I noticed the same thing when it happened. Not one of his better moments.

I can’t imaging he was ever pegged as a long term solution. Shanahan should have done a proper search around this time last year and replaced Dubas at the conclusion of the season.

Perhaps Tre wasn’t a Shanahan hire? Apparently his dad is friends with more than one MLSE Board member……..

I think you’re asking the wrong question.

Did the Leafs continue to improve as a team after 2021 and 2022 and round out as a truly elite contender? I think they are off trajectory.

But the league also got a lot worse with more parity so in theory it looks like from a relative strength perspective the Leafs are right there in the mix.

Basically we got worse but the bar to win the cup has been lowered.
I dunno about that. There's certainly more parity in the middle of the field, in the competition for the playoffs and maybe 2nd rd. But the top contenders (Florida, Boston, Vegas, Colorado, Dallas) still look like they'll be wagons in the playoffs.

I wouldn't even group the Leafs in the next tier with LA, NYR, VAN.

No longer...elite.

Elite...no longer.
They never were

Important to keep this in the context of being just one game and not overreacting but really hard not to be disgusted by that game. We’ve had some clunkers this year, but this one takes the cake.

I’ve generally been on the fence this year re Keefe. Whether people care to admit it or not he definitely has strengths and the guys like him which is worth something. And not to lay last night at the feet of any one person because that was one of the most complete team effort losses I’ve ever witnessed, but last night pushed me more in favour of firing Keefe. IF there is a quality, experienced coach available.

There are things out of his control like personnel but in terms of things last night I disliked:

1) stop coddling samsonov. He should face been pulled after allowing the first goal, that stinker deflated the whole team and set the tone for the rest of the night. How he remained in for 5 goals is beyond me. By the time Jones came in the team had already quit.

2) maybe try something? Anything at all? I was floored that at no point did the lines get mixed up. Maybe put marner, Domi and Knies back together? Still winnable, down 6-3 to open the third and the 4th line is playing waaaay too much. Shorten the bench, we needed offense.

Our PK stinks, we don’t manage the puck well in neutral ice, you opted to change the defensive system from one that worked to what we have now which is a mess of missed assignments. There are personnel factors contributing, but overall that’s on coaching.
