Keefe thought it was a good idea to run a third line that hasn't played together for any significant time.

Imagine if he inserts Knies just to play with Kerfoot and Acciari
Extremely bizarre indeed
All that tinkering ( which was ok ) then follow it up with a brand new trio ?? And Your veteran captain in a relatively foreign position , and minimize your great accumulated strength up the middle , nullifying it and your team ???
Then you finally claw your way back , crowds back , just score , starting to take over , you put on your 4th line and again outsmart yourself once again snd give up the momentum.
All this in one of the most important games in your career and this teams core ??
I’m perplexed big time .
Out coaches himself all the time .

Marner had 3 points tonight, Matthews had 2 points.

The problems tonight in chronological order were
#1 Samsonov playing like Toskala

#2 The PK, Tampa went 4/8 on the PP. Yes there was a 5 minute major and 2 man advantage in there. Does not matter, 4 PP goals against.

#3 McCauley being a dickhead

Points mean nothing when you have already lost the game

Matthews had no impact. For a player being played to be an impactful player
Marner was a liability in many cases

God bless Schenn, but dude is so slow. If he is not clearing guys in front of the net he can be a big time liability.

Has to be used in very specific situations.

It's just blowing my mind that we can't even make a big hit or clear the crease (a.ka give a light shove to a players back) without getting a penalty. It's really just tiring to watch.
Yeah but in the 3rd period we weren't doing any of that and the refs didn't matter at that point.

Marner assisted both goals when the Leafs clawed back to make it 3-2. I wouldn't say the game was already lost at that point.

Sure they can be better, but just saying the OP i quoted asked for a goal between them, they had 5 points combined tonight. They were not the problem. It was the goaltending, the defence, the PK.

Keefe gifting Tampa a 5on3 down by only 3 and waving the white flag with over a full period to go was so pathetic. How can we expect the players to maintain composure and make smart decisions when the coach can't either. At least Bunting's moronic decision with a split second thing during the game, Keefe actually had a few minutes to think about what he was going to do.

I have no problem with that stuff whatever your line of work is!

Just a reminder that hockey is a game played by grown men sliding around on ice with sticks. So you don’t have to be that smart… if you’re good.

basically i was trying to say that people that actually know the stuff are being shunned by morons with a tablet. Like hockey analytics bullshit. there is no stat that shows heart, character, willingness to compete, willingness to pressure the puck, etc...

keefe is a good example of trying overthink and not be able to take advantage of last change/home ice. Moreover, he came up with the lines with magic 8 ball that didn't have any chemistry going into the playoffs.

Agreed. Teams usually build momentum for the next game by laying out big hits in a game they know they are losing. We didn't do anything in the 3rd period like that.

I also agree that players have to take some ownership too but coaches have to find a way to help players succeed, play them to their strength and get the wins for the team. Cooper did that to a "T" tonight. Which is especially impressive since he didn't have the last change. Keefe did and he couldn't run his bench to benefit the team.

whats the point of having home ice and last change if the coach is not going to use it to full advantage
Perfectly said man …
It’s going to be tough…
We need luck
Maybe a Woll Miracle

True. We also started worse than I've ever seen. This loss wasn't on the refs but if we had any chance at all they took it away when it was 4-2.

marner also made the giveaway that led to a tampa goal.

he was floating around like a little fairy. getting easily rubbed off pucks. staying on way too long.

he's putrid in the playoffs. good for him, paul, and his fanboys for him racking up a few meaningless apples

with the refs watching bunting like a hawk for every possible infractions its better to go with knies and keep bunting in the pressbox. And for God's sake holl needs to be run out of the building
If he's not suspended or when he's back I'd still roll the dice with him over Kerfoot. At least he has a chance of doing something positive for us. Kerfoot may as well be a random fan selection

If I asked you to guess the forward who had most 5v5 scoring chances, even a Nylander hater would probably guess that the answer is Nylander.

It's time to give him and Matthews the keys to the team once playoffs roll around. Marner is not a top 2 guy at this point of the season.
