Marchand's super pest chirping was right on point unfortunately and a lot of truth within his words.

There are many Leaf fans that agree with his sentiment that Leafs players went for the money and not the success, and a team like Boston who have top players taking less have more playoff success as a result.
Indisputable at this point.
Simmonds should have made him back up his words, that was a little disappointing.

That so called nostalgia is warranted when you team is winning cups in style, when players, coaches & mgrs were held accountable...when players had second jobs in the summer because hockey earnings weren't enough....you are so wrong. Those teams would go through brick walls to win. Today's Leafs team couldnt hold any of their jockstraps.
We certainly weren't winning any cups in the 70s or 80s, despite a way easier environment to do so, and players, coaches, and managers are held way more accountable now than back then. Our team would skate circles around those teams, and they have just as much will to win. Why would you want your players working 2nd jobs in the summer instead of training? What does that have to do with anything? Weird comments.

Imagine thinking the Leafs are right there with the Bruins because they both lost to Arizona.
True story.

FWIW, I thought they were pretty good for two periods then started vacation early.
To me this looked like the team with the leagues best sv% vs the team with the league's 14th best sv%, even though they might be #1 and #2 in the overall standings in points.

Really doesn't matter how many regular season points the Leafs put up there are still a lot of teams with better goaltending that have advantages come playoff time.

Leafs won nothing in the 70's until now...I was obviously referring to the 60's...I thought it was obvious...

There was zero truth in his words. He didn't take less at all.
It's amazing that you don't realize you're playing right into Marchand's game. Or maybe you do.

Great result last night. LOVED IT!!!!

The brass got to see what a hungry team looks like. We have more skilled players but Boston skated circles around us. It looked like the Bruins were the Harlem Globetrotters and Toronto was an under 15 girls team. I sure hope the brass does not excuse this game as a, "Hey its the game before the All Star break, everyone is distracted, Oh well." I hope they use this game as a "Hey its the game before the All Star break, everyone is distracted, unacceptable to not be focused on this game!!!"

The playbook on how to win the cup can't be any more simple, we have to beat Tampa in Round 1 and Boston in Round 2. So you target players that have historically played well vs Boston and Tampa. That is the easy part, the hard part is having the stones to do what you need to do to get those players, because it may cost you your future. I mean how many team KNOW who they are playing in the first two rounds? Three teams know. Boston, Tampa and Toronto.

I'm sure I'm not the only person who knows what Boston is going to do:

1) When the other team has the puck, control the puck along the boards, no team in the NHL is as good along the boards as Boston. They don't allow you to clear the puck along the boards, they dont allow you to chip the puck along the boards, they dont allow you to use the boards to pass the puck, they own the boards.

2) When they have possession they look to put the puck into open ice. If you don't have the puck you go to open ice, the puck carrier knows if the ice is open, someone will be there.

3) On a rush, there is always a trailer up high in the middle of the ice, ALWAYS!!!!

4) If they are wide, they will ALWAYS cross seam pass the puck, ALWAYS!!!

If a dummy like me can see this, WTF was Keefe doing last night? He had 4 days to prepare for this game, our team looked like they were surprised that Boston was doing Boston things. TBH watch the Hossa/Spezza/Havlat Sens teams a few decades ago, this Boston team plays exactly like them.

You mean like when the Bruins faced the Blues in the playoffs?

Well you originally said 60s, 70s, and 80s. I'm not sure what a 6-team, no cap league from 60 years ago has to do with now, but whatever you incorrectly think it was like back then as a result of 60-year old nostalgia, you're never getting it back from any team at any point, so I think it's time to accept that.

Yep.

The playoffs will determine what the team looks like next year.

I could see almost no changes other than growth of players, and new management.

A few summer signings but the core is the core.

What sticks out to me is the Pastranak puck flip past Morgan Riley……..what’s wrong with taking the man. We have the softest defense core in the league…..I’d like to know how many hits they had last night.

The reason why Marchand is a good pest is because, while he's just "joking", there's also a lot of truth behind it. That's why it had the entire room in stitches. They were struggling to breathe they were laughing so hard. Because that's the reputation our players DO have. Even among other players. He subtly bashed them for their greed, as well as their soft "video game and pink skates" type of of personalites.

You think it would go over so well if he said that joke about Simmonds? Nobody would laugh and they'd be like " What are you talking about?" If he was bashing Simmons, it would be another joke with truth behind it. But it most certainly wouldn't be about (lol) being distracted by video games.

I agree with this 100%.
we keep hearing that this core needs to learn how to win………this is their 7th year and nothing looks any different
We're on the same page. Too much being paid to the core to have the necessary depth to win playoff rounds. If they manage to win at least a few rounds, then I think I will be okay with that. But if they don't, Dubas will have wasted/ruined what could have been multiple years of playoff success due to an imbalanced team build, which many of us saw from the moment he signed "his" core to those contracts.

Da Bruins came to play in our barn last night with 4 lines with lots of speed and a strong 2 man forecheck and always 1 guys back to cover for D .. da bruins played almost flawless D and G in a very structured half ice game which forced Willy to try to beat 3 guys up da middle (he did 3 times but quite frankly not enough) .. that was still not da fastest or roughest Bruins can play when required which will be reserved for playoffs .. but it showed ALL da holes in our team which will result in another playoff loss ..

And da real issues are clearly foremost in net where Sammy, although a great backup pickup, can't be tending net in playoffs ,, no NHL team casts off their young 1st rounder tender with all da skills in world with size, athletics and technique unless there is a major problem which can't be corrected which IS a mental issue in big time money games .. Leaf's are not fixing his brain .. so that means we got Murray (if healthy) or Woll to play in playoffs .. I still have hope in G as Murray has won 2 Cups and if he can be healthy then we got a chance in net

But our D can't be LOOSE like last night .. I counted major defensive mistakes/giveaways by our D at Scotia last night and it is alarming folks .. Rielly with 7 major errors, Sandin with 5 major defensive errors, Holl with 1, Brodie with 1, Lily with 2 and Gio with none .. Bruins had 3 all night long and their biggest was coaching/line change mistake on Mitch's goal .. to give Sandin some kudos he did make a great offensive play which would have resulted in a goal if Engval was not at end of da play .. but Rielly provided nothing offensively i mean a complete zero .. bottom line we can't afford to have 12 major defensive errors from Rielly and Sandin in any playoff game .. those 2 don't have ability to create 12 chances so we are always going to be in deep sh*t with this formula on D .. they may create 2 max in playoffs .. bottom line take out Rielly and Sandin and add in Benn and Timmer and you are ahead defensively which is what counts in playoffs .. but even with that change we still don't measure up on D .. a big move on D is required to advance a round or two .. Sandin, Robertson and a 1st to Zona for Jakob C will help strengthen our top 4 .. then move Rielly to get a BIG FAST LWer and 3rd line C who can force open up ice against bruins stand up D structure at blue line for Mitch (he can't do it himself because he does not have foot speed to beat D wide and his stop and turn play at blue line does not work against a team which brings a C back to cut off that play so he can't help out on da rush) ..

Lastly and this is another major issue which I don' think can be solved either is down da middle at C .. i love JT but bottom line he can't keep up as we all saw last night .. he got beat like a rented mule many times in da game coming back with lack of foot speed .. he can take da draws but he needs to shift to LW for rest of shift and Willy and/Mitch has to take middle of ice .. it has to occur even with Matty back .. and we need a 3C like a Coyle who can tilt ice to us on some 3rd lien shifts

More likely is we need MURRAY to win us 2 or 3 games each series .. and that is very unlikely .. i don't think Dubie can make necessary roster changes to make team competitive this year .. and I don't think Keefer has stones to bench Rielly and Sandin in playoffs and move JT to LW ..

That said really impressed with fightback from Gio, Wayner Jancrck and Bunts .. those 4 guys were noticeable to giving a huge effort to try to stop da tilt .. but it is not enough folks .. we need more guys who give a sh*t

Marchands comments have some truth behind it. Like some have pointed out that’s what make him a good chirper. He takes something with truth and turns into an insult. The best chirps that get anyone riled up are the ones with some truth.

Look at how some of the board is responding to his chirp. It’s because he’s telling some of the truth. If he went on and called Marner or any leaf player a female dog it’s whatever. That’s the difference between a good chirper and a bad one. Marchand is elite at what he does on the ice with his chirping.

They're really not good chirps. He lied about taking less, and then he lied about interactions with our players.
He doesn't need to be clever or accurate, because what he is actually good at is capitalizing on this market to create controversy - something that is really easy. He knows that he just has to light a tiny fire, and the media and a portion of this fanbase will play right into his game, feed those false narratives, blow oxygen on it, and create a wildfire for him.

Are you sure because you seem pretty worked up over the comment lol.

That Marchant video is so telling. An entire room full of journalists explodes in laughter when he suggests the only leaf player that chirps back is Marner, but he's talking about video games, his dog, and his pink skates.

That's this cores reputation. And not by fans, but by players. The team is a soft spoiled joke.

And last nights game was indicative of that.
I don't necessarily think chirping is big deal. Some players aren't big on chirping or talking on the ice, I don't think that's too abnormal. For instance, IIRC Datsyuk was quiet, but he'd absolutely rip your throat out in the game

I think this quote by Keefe is more of an indictment on the team, @1specter posted it in the pre-game thread:

The fact that this team gets quiet when things go bad is a terrible sign. There's no one from the core who is able to pick the team up and push them along. Colorado has Mackinnon, Tampa has their entire core, Boston has Bergeron/Marchand. Who do we have?

Are you sure because you seem pretty worked up over the comment lol.
Couldn't care less about the comment. Marchand says something stupid every day. It's just who he is.
It's the people who are eating it up and making false statements about our team and players that are way more concerning.

What Marchand also knows that a lot of Leaf fans do, is there was no fear of retribution for what he said, because he realizes there is no push back ability on the Leafs. Being able to push others buttons through sarcasm rooted in truth, is one of Marchand's abilities that extend beyond his play on the ice to get in the heads of the opposition,

Some teams would have put his words up on their dressing room and made him regret and pay through physicality or winning to prove him wrong, as added motivation.

Leafs management believes if you dress 1 single tough player Simmonds sporadically on the 4th line and give him < 8 minutes of TOI/g that its going to shake fear into the other teams top players. Micheal Bunting got knocked around like a pin cushion yesterday and NO Leafs player bothered enough to care.
