- Marner won't accept the trade.
- No one's giving anything comparable for a player that's UFA at the end of next season.
- Tavares' contract expires end of next season. Only way I'd sign him again is on the Spezza deal otherwise seeya. I like him BTW but if both him and Marner walk, they have $22M+ to work with and they could finally do what they should have done all along and get a frigging goalie and shutdown defenseman.
Honestly, if he has another shitty series and they lose, I kind of think he'll want to leave. I think he needs a reset away from this fishbowl.

We also can't keep running out the same ridiculously unbalanced lineup and expect to win a Cup with it. It's not happening.

It could be any one of a hundred communicable things that they don't want spreading through the room - from the flu to Covid - but you're somehow dead convinced it is Mono???
I only said Mono because if it was the flu or a cold he would probably be playing. Timmons had Mono this year and that's why I threw that out there. We had a flu bug go through the team a few months ago and most guys played through it...I imagine Willy did as well if he had it at the time.

We need to be better but this commentary is just laughably wrong in almost every point.

There is a pretty significant difference between failing to get it done (which is us last night) and playing not only poorly, but the worst game of this entire regular season and playoffs, which this was far from

And you did not know shit about this team losing this series to Boston or pummeled. Last I checked there are still up to 6 more games in this series to decide that

Just go out and win. No excuses

The overreactions here are expected but ridiculous at the same time.
"Overreactions"? lol

Yeah, nothing to criticize or worry about after the same pathetic display we've witnessed in the playoffs for what, the past 8 years? Yeah, this'll end without more bizarre Leaf drama.

I'm out, time to watch two hard mens teams play in Florida (the real mecca of hockey in 2024).

I thought the leafs played fine. Boston was the better team but not as lopsided as the score. If core decides to no show game 2 Holmberg and Kampf lines better pick up the offensive slack.

Which is better in the long run,
2 - Losing Marner in FA clearing up $11m in cap room?

as a fan, sucks to see him go. But god damn, need to set an example that you're done pampering these p***ys and giving them everything under the sun. Put that money towards a goaltender a top pairing dman who actually is a #1 or forwards that give a shit. and earn a paycheque

Agreed. I knew I forgot someone.
It was clear after the Babcock and Keefe's criticism of Marner fiascos that the culture is set from the top.
Andersen had a dominant performance tonight.
Not that Andersen isn't easily better than anything the Leafs have, because he is, but he will disappoint in the playoffs. Just give it time.

Yea need to add that in too

I think cap increasing to 92M (5M) should give space for a goalie in 2025/2026
I’d hold off on assuming the cap will rise, the world’s on the verge of another world war and who know when the powers that be will decide another lock down needs to take place, many things can happen to put a wrench into cap projections imo………

Well we have Treliving now, but Shanny still gets final call.

Look at what happened to Florida after moving on from Huberdeau ? Maybe there isn't a Tkachuk out there we can trade for, but getting rid of that kind of player who lacks intensity, plays a soft game and disappears when it matters make a big difference on the teams culture.

Either Marner steps up and proves he's worth his contract this year or he's gone. Or should be gone at least.

sacrifice is part of progress:

- personal growth (ex: healthy body - give up garbage food eventhough it tastes great)
- education growth (give up partying, hanging, gaming, and spend time hitting the books at library)
- professional growth (same as education growth except you invest time in learning your craft and give up something else)
- business growth (give up time spent doing other things and invest more time in your business)
or...

HOCKEY
- Player ABC (invests time in improving their game with career span not too big to achieve greatness or at least contributing to team success)

OR

- Player ABC is dealt or walks as a UFA. Its a team sacrifice that must be done for overall success and better future progress.

As economists say there is an "opportunity costs" for everything; the thing is what opportunity are you willing to give up to have some other opportunity. And how does that play in the long term?

Our goaltending isn’t good enough and we don’t make life difficult enough for the guy on the other end. Both are true, keep arguing with yourself.
Not true... but keep acting like you don't see it.

Look I get it, its too easy to just blame the goaltending, It is rather grey than black & white but some times theres anamolies. The picture realy is Black & white. I just don't want to bring up 8 years of playoff hockey vs opponents that all could have lost to the Leafs. These were good teams they lost to with the lone exception of Montreal where it was clear from since than they had goaltending issues.

in Just about every playoff sereies from the core 4 and on they lost to teams in 7 games that were as good or better than the Leafs as a team. They didn't lose to chumps. The Leafs competed right to the end where the differance was goaltending every time.

I don't need to go further and over disect losing to damn good, high drama openeing round opponents that were cup worthy themselves.

I can honestly say and believe the Leafs dont suck... the situation does facing cup contenders in the openeing round all the time.

If letting Marner walk for nothing or not getting fair value are the options, I’ll take what I can get and be thankful for it……..

Pretty simple game to sum up. John Tavares is your captain who has no heart, grit, urgency, and is a complete flop and has been for many years. Not the type of captain who leads a team to a cup. Won’t win anything with him leading your team, that’s on Dubas, but we all know the team he iced was never going to win.

Small details like giving up the middle of the ice after every turnover by forwards turning towards the boards giving an easy outlet and option for F3 or a D joining the rush. That part is coaching and accountability, don’t have any of that on this team. Need a big save but not all Sammy’s fault. First shot on net can’t be a 2 on 1, have to let him feel the puck to start the game.

The 3rd line can’t be out there together, I know Robertson gives it is all but he’s too small, gets pushed off pucks, can’t get to the high danger zones because he’s just too small. But again, a Dubas guy. Jarnkrok first game back and it showed, Holmberg looked overwhelmed and the lack of playoff experience showed.

When it’s all said and done, your horses are the ones you lean and rely on. They didn’t get it done tonight. They will only go as far as the “core” will push them.

We all know regular season and playoffs are two different things. We have been powerplay merchants in years past and regular season winners the past few years and it hasnt translated into wins in the playoffs.

Tre added some snot this offseason. Its only game one so lets see how this team responds in game two. It's still a flawed team in my opinion. But let's see before we write them off.

Personally I thought they played well.

Boston was opportunistic in that all their good chances (and they had only a few) ended up in the back of our net.

I was pleasantly surprised how well the Leafs they played despite the end score.

My two cents.

Win tomorrow and take control of the series.

Yes. This series is far from over. Just the start. We started the same way last year against Tampa

Go back to Sammy. Get a lead or two. But won't mean much if Matthews doesn't get on board

That was the 7th playoff game in a row we haven't scored more than 3 goals. Matthews hasn't scored in 6 games in a row

That just can't happen

Hopefully, Nylander is good for game 2.

We need to find a way to clean up the defence whoever is playing, even if that means playing a more defensive/boring style of play. You have to stop these guys from pinching or getting too deep. I would honestly not allow any of our D-man to pinch and only be allowed to play the other team's blue line and the moment we lose the puck you retreat, don't worry about stepping up to hit someone or pressure them, just get back and play defence and take your man.
