Post-Game Talk: Leafs lose 4-3 OT in game 5

None of the breakaways and 2 on 1 really deserved to be a goal that I've seen. Telegraphed shot to the 5 hole by Hyman today, might as well not even bothered, wouldn't have scored on an AHL goalie.

Also I'm going to have to continue to complain about Thornton. Hes been out there for 25 years on the power play but cant make a routine pass?

Hes cooked, done, he cant skate 25% of what he once could, his only goal was great but it wasn't a series changer or anything.

If I cant trust him to make those simple powerplay plays and play with any creativity on the pp whats the point?

Saturday is such a big opportunity. This core has done nothing but lose the last 5 years when it counts.

Saturday is going to be incredibly tough, but if they win, they can start to erase that narrative.

Same, was so so disappointed, but then logically thought, it took, 3 giveaways, 1 really bad goaltending game, 3 lines capable of scoring on the opposition for them to eek out a win in ot. Game 6 should be the end of this
Precisely why I'm confident they take game 6.

This group knows how to bounce back unlike previous years.

I don't think Matthews and Marner are gonna be too happy having to stew on this performance until Saturday.

id probably be sad if i didnt have a semi gambling problem. My team losing hurts less than losing hundreds on a stupid bet lol. (curse you chinese esports.. but thats another day)

Ugh that was a tough one... had the game recorded just finished. Last game is always the hardest to win, hope the team comes out in game 6 and finishes it.

Matthews did not seem engagedd at all. Gotta be injured or just doesn't give a f***
I thought a few times Hyman and Marner went down on a rush, Mitch curled back to find the late trailer and Matthews was so far behind the play he had to put it in the corner. Matthews was very off tonight.

Marner is not invisible, he was plenty visible. He's just slow with decision making right now and is holding on to the puck too long. Matthews was invisible tonight though.
I will give Matthews the benefit of the doubt and say his wrist is injured. Marner is not getting paid $11m for this nonsense

Wonder why Mckinon doesn’t get injured (or does he?). Dude doesn’t get hit? Heck he hits and plays like crazy. He is every scrum and initiates contact.

That $6 mil/year salary for Willy that everyone was freaking out about is looking pretty good right now compared to the Matthews and Marner salaries. At least Willy shows up in the playoffs
I think part of the problem is that teams are going to target Matthews. He isn't adjusting.

When that opens up space for Mitch, if he's not on his game - which he clearly is not right now - it makes him his own worst enemy.

Way too much time and space to overthink a million possible plays when sometimes he just has to get his shot off yesterday.

But I agree. Willy has pulled his weight x10. He is making up both of their currently inflated value.

Just want to see them succeed. They're too talented not to. Dig deeper.

Sloppy play early, and some tough ones on Jack. But the third showed we're the team with more talent, and another gear Montreal doesn't have. Don't overthink it, it wasn't a choke job, it was the coin flip that is playoff hockey. Go get it on Saturday. No reason to be less confident in this team's ability then there was 4 hours ago.

Beat themselves tonight, but I was impressed that they held it together to come back.

Matthews needs to wake up and Marner needs to get that monkey off of his back and score a goal. HE’s had so many chances.

Campbell battled to give the team a chance but this was his worst game so far too.

Maybe a hit of a wake up call as to how hard it is to close out a series. They aren’t making it easy on themselves and now I’m concerned that Montreal has some momentum.

It would not be past this team to blow a 3-1 series lead. Which is why we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves.

Just think of how deflated the boys must feel having to pack up their shit and fly to f***ing MTL and stay in a shitty hotel and play in front of their trash fans because Galchenyuk is a f***ing idiot. They are going to play like shit in Montreal

tonight was the night to get it done. big uphill climb next game with the fans and momentum on their side.

A 4-0 win to lead the series 3-1 got about 12 pages within the hour when the game was done.
An OT loss is at 19 pages in less time.
We are better than this Leafsnation

They were also 2-0 in the last two before Dermott went in, so the decision made sense.

The team just didn't play well enough and shot themself in the foot when gifted a chance.

So Leafs

They didn't have a shutout the previous 2 games, and Sandin was not great in the first game they lost also.

It wouldn't be so bad if we were playing a good team, but to have your pp suck against the Habs, well that tells you everything you need to know. A stationary, uncreative pp
What really gets me is that this is a PP structure the coaching staff have actively mismanaged. The system that WORKED for them under Babcock made full use of the bumper play and the reason why it was changed was the most idiotic reason: a lack of production. During that time, the Leafs weren’t getting calls so of course they’re not going to be scoring!
Then they adulterated the custom-built PP by forcing the one time play from Matthews. The old PP coach figured out that this wasn’t working and was trying to change it back until he was canned for Malhotra. Now it’s a mess that insists on entering the zone via drop passes with minimal speed upon zone entry and minimal player movement afterwards. Running the PP through Marner introduces some issues that are being highlighted: he can’t protect the puck, make quick and crisp decisions and passes, and directed plays. Whoop-de-do. Players have no cohesive set play which is made evident with how often missed shots carom off the boards and out of the zone. If a puck needs to stay in the zone, it’s up to Marner (and Matthews’) whim. Even a traditional 2D point shot heavy system would do wonders for the team considering the coach insists on using veterans like Thornton and Simmonds.
Between the PP and the ice time players get, I’m losing trust in Keefe, regular season record by damned.

What sucks most about this game, is that we gave it to Montreal with mistakes. We clearly have the better team. There is no way we lose like this again.

You could also blame Keefe for the lack of a killer instinct...Dermott was in last game, the team got a 4-0 shutout, and then he decides to play Sandin.

Well, it's always a team loss... But at the end of the day the players have to execute, coach cannot do that. Tonight was a turnover fest from start to finish. Only reason the game went to ot was because the Habs are a horrible team. The players gifted that win... 3 goals given away with hardly any effort for the opponent.

I am anxious now to see how they come out after facing some controversy.

Keefe has some decisions to make too for the line up, but his in game management today was great imo.

Well, the other issue with that line right now... Why is it Hyman and Matthews are frequently down on the ice before any kind of play is made at all? I could have sworn knocking a guy down without the puck was interference. Guess not.
