Seems one star gets the brunt of the criticism while the other is rarely mentioned when they should be held to the highest standard on the team. They both need to be much better but too many here seem to have too narrow a vision,
I think both 34 and 16 are overpaid and under perform on a regular basis. Is that too narrow a vision?

The D’s Swiss cheese, goaltending is a concern, and bottom six depth isn’t what it should be, but all those problems are because there’s no money to improve these areas because of what the core make. When the core play to expectations these issues can be tolerated, when they mail it in…….not so much………

It is sad the biggest NHL market has to overpay it's stars (Willie will get his soon).

I wouldn't say it's 'a regular basis'

Lots of games in hand on most teams and a really favourable schedule over the next couple of months will help. I would also expect to see at least one new defenseman brought in during that stretch as by mid-December they will presumably have certainty on the availability of Klingberg's cap space. Some of that cap space should also be used on a third line centre. I get that the third line is playing well right now, but I'm not sure I want Max Domi as my third line centre in the playoffs.
When you lose games to Chicago I wouldn't say any games are favorable.

week off, two games in Sweden then another week off and a game at 2pm sounds a recipe for a predictable throw away game tbh. domi line looked good Bert looked good and the top line looked flat. Flush it and move on. Im sure AM and Mitch will look alot better tonight vs the pens.

Seems like it would have been a pretty easy win had the goalie shown up. They certainly didn't look tired to me.

No chance Keefe is getting fired at this point based on the team's record.
Record? We're a .500 team or worse with some extra points because of 3v3 and SO, things which don't exist when hockey matters.

Like I said after that post, this is the exact same song and dance over and over again. We can't trade any of the core and we don't really have assets to acquire much in terms of trade. Keefe is the only thing somewhat impactful that we can change.

For what they are paid, it should only be a handful of games a season and zero in the playoffs in my opinion, but that’s just me, that’s my definition of elite talent………
For sure they both need to be better. My post was more pointing out that both need to be better, not just narrowly focus on one as some are prone to do.
(I was adding on to your post, not saying you were doing that)

Over half the games yesterday had unexpected results.

Tonight, against the former general mis-manager, is one of those games where a competitive team would show up and prove something. Let’s see if they can play with a purpose tonight.

It would be nice to see Keefe split Matthews and Marner once in a while. Seems like they’ll have a great game where they put up 3 points followed up multiple quiet games until they go off again and repeat. We need our star players showing up every night and if it’s not on the scoreboard it still has to be out on the ice when you’re making as much money as they are.

These would be the forward lines I’d like Keefe to try for a couple games.

Knies - Matthews - Bertuzzi
Jarnkrok - Tavares - Marner
Robertson - Domi - Nylander
McMann - Kampf - Gregor

Obviously if we’re down a goal late in the game or need a spark, put Matthews and Marner together but they don’t need to be glued to each others hips 24/7.

You look at Chicago or Pittsburgh when they were winning cups, Toews-Kane and Crosby-Malkin ran their own lines yet still played together when needed.

That loss was all about sh*tty tending .. everyone has a bad game here and there and that one was all on Sammy .. but that was 1st game this season where I feel he lost us a point .. our D needs improvement and that pass by Matty was really really bad but still it was a game lost by tender

Sammy was crap but they should have been able to outscore his mistakes. That was an AHL team they lost to last night and the Big 4 did virtually nothing.

For all of the moaning, after tonight's game the Leafs will likely be in second place in the Atlantic, only 6 points behind Boston (who I think will lose in NYC today) with games in hand on everyone. The sky isn't falling, and there is time, and now money, to clean up the things that need to be cleaned up.

Well lets look on the bright side the Leafs 2023-24 record of 10-5-3 after 18 games for 23 points > 2022-23 record of 9-5-4 for 22 points.

The Leafs big 4 core that eat up 1/2 the Leafs salary cap literally combined for 0-0-0 points.

Sheldon Keefe got swept by 31st overall Chicago Blackhawks this year and he even got a goal from Ryan Reeves as secondary scoring to boot in this one.

This came down to a real goalie battle ... Hawks goalie Arvid Soderblom has a season SV% of .885 (tied for 45th) but both his wins on the season have come against Toronto.

Leafs got "out-goalied" again, but then again Leafs Samsonov has a season SV% of .878 (49th in the league)

So maybe the results shouldn't be all that surprising and can be explained as Leafs starting goalie does make less saves? :dunno:
