Brutal call by the officials late in the game, but we didn't deserve any breaks based on our effort for most of the game.

Another unacceptable performance against a bottom feeder. This team is so predictable.

They need to get JT off the top PP unit, and have someone who is willing to stand in the slot and screen the goalie, particularly on shots from the point.
JT is leading the team in PP points right now so that's likely not wise

Way too early to panic people, Tavares is playing like a captain, I’m sure the M&M boys will get it together, would like to see Robertson get a shot.

He doesn't make a good point though. It's not up to you or Jeffler to determine what is the proper way for fans to react at any time.

Which wasn't the point either... I mean it's completely been missed, but carry on.

Situation room is routinely not involved when there are missed calls on the ice. Calls into question the arbitrariness of the process and why you wouldn’t just have an eye in the sky officiating the whole game as opposed to 4 guys on the ice.

Depends what you mean by missed calls .. Penalites for example are at the discretion of the on ice officials and not the situation room.

Apparently according the a recent rule change back to 2019 the NHL situation room reviews all goals scored around the league. Did the puck cross the line, was it kicked in, or directed in by a glove etc. goalie interference etc.

This isn't uncommon in sports as the NFL has a similar rule that all scoring plays are under review by situation rooms with Reffing officials employed to assist in making the right calls.

It doesn't matter if it hits the Arizona players stick, what matters is who has possession next after the puck is directed by the hand.

In this case, conclusively, the puck goes from Rielly's hand down to the ice and the next player to have possession is a Maple Leaf.

I don't think that was Rielly's intent, but what unfolded in that situation is definitely a hand pass, though, as I said, I don't think it was intended to be.
They call that all the time. If you knock the puck down with the palm of your hand and neither you nor an opposing player touches it before a teammate, it's a hand pass and they stop play.

Personally, I thought it hit the Coyote player's skate, but it wasn't clear.

Probably the correct call, and that isn't what cost us the game. The game was lost in the 50 minutes of laziness before the refs gifted us the PP that Willy scored on. Yes, 'gifted'. If that holding call had been against Toronto, half the posters here would have been screaming 'fix'.

When Are Hand Passes Illegal In Laymans Terms

Okay now that we’ve gone through the rulebook on hand passes let’s break this term down in a way we can understand. When looking to determine when hand pass is legal there are three main factors you want to take into account.

Number one did the hand pass direct the puck towards a teammate, two how long did the player hold onto the puck and three where on the ice did the hand pass occur.

Passing To A Teammate

The most common reason a hand pass is going to be called is when the puck is passed from one teammate to another.

As you can see from the rulebook it is completely legal to bat, push and stop a puck with an open hand. But if any of these actions are down to move the puck to a teammate an illegal hand pass is going to be called.

Even if a hand pass is simply pushed into open ice resulting in a teammate skating in and picking up the puck this will still be considered a hand pass. The reason for this is because the rule states that moving the puck with your hand can not give your team an advantage.

Even if a player were to unintentionally hand pass to a teammate it would be called so long as it gave the hand passing team possession or an advantage.

Additionally, hand passes are going to be called if a player passes to a teammate indirectly or directly. This means if a player hits the puck with his hand his teammate cannot gain possession even if the puck is deflected off an opposing teams player.

The easiest way to remember the hand pass rule is to think of it in terms of benefiting your team. If a player on your team hits the puck with his hand and it positively affects your team it will almost always be called.

In other words, the hand pass rules are put in place to ensure a team does not reap benefits from hitting the puck with their hand. The only real way to effectively use your hand is to bat the puck away to buy time or to bat the puck towards yourself.

Leafs are the laughingstock of the league….EVEN if you forget everything that has happened in previous years and just look at this year. Even if you forget all about the historical context of this team, and their struggles, they are the laughingstock:

- traded for murray
- lost to habs
- murray injured
- lost to Arizona
This sums it up. This current roster is BAD!

From an outsiders perspective they could use more friction in the room. Internal rivalry between the top 2 lines, split up your stars between the PP1 and PP2 and have each unit competing hard for ice time, each trying to outshine the other group, etc. feeling the heat when you don’t score, next unit steals your thunder. Everyone’s a buddy, everyone believes in one another. Maybe you shouldn’t believe in each other. Maybe you need to prove it to each other every day. And you can’t do it, you get the boot.
Really wish we had a firecracker in there who just wouldn't tolerate a loss. MacK is that guy for Colorado

The suck went on way longer than this last season and things turned out fine as far as the regular season record went. Its not time to panic yet...

He has 3 points, but how? A puck bounces in off his skate. Rielly makes a good play to keep the puck in, JT shovels it 10 feet to Matthews, who makes a pinpoint pass to Nylander, who whips a great shot into the net. Nylander puts in a rebound off his shot.

He got an assist (not on the PP) when he flubbed a shot and it deflected off a defenceman right into the slot for Malgin.

He's rarely involved in moving the puck around and doesn't screen the goalie very often. We have lots of guys moving the puck. We need someone to cause havoc in the slot.

You can't argue with people who only look at points to determine who a hockey player is

What about a non high stick that glances off a guys shoulder pad in a Game 7 that results in a series changing power play? That might be something for the situation room to call down on to clarify. But hell, consistency, integrity, competence isn’t exactly the National Hockey League standard operating procedure.

After perusing some of the writing and listening to some of the talk shows, one thing stands out... or one term stands out I should say...

"in typical Leafs fashion..."

Hard to expect a different result at seasons end. That really is why people are rolling their eyes. This team is exactly what they have been for the past four years.

There certainly some subjective situations which may be more grey area and inconclusive, but the hand pass rule seems to be pretty clear.

Morgan clearly opened his glove and touched the puck with his hand .. Keller (IIRC) was the Arizona player, and the puck might have touched or glanced off him, but he certainly didn't attempt to play it, Marner sweeps in beside Mo Riells and gets the puck gains possession, and the play should have been halted right there.

Refs on the ice let the play, play-out to conclusion, but the situation room appears to have gotten it right.

Is This Call Reviewable?

Yes, throughout the many NHL seasons in which the hand pass rules have been in place several game-changing goals featured potential missed calls regarding hand passes.

Due to these missed calls, the NHL began reviewing hand pass goals in the 2020 NHL season. A hand pass cannot be reviewed in terms of calling a penalty but it can be part of the review process when determining whether a goal was legal or not.
