Didn't think about it much but Liljegren is so important to this defensive core. Not that they have been bad or anything, but the D core is slow. Liljegren isn't the fastest either but his puck movement and breakout passing really speeds up our transition attack. He's arguably our best passer on the back end.

I had the D as the fourth or fifth concern before the preseason began, but moved it up to second for the reasons you’ve stated.

Im not sure they can fix it during the season without creating another hole

What? JT is perfect on that top pp line. They need to make 2 even units. The skilled guys refuse to use JT. They want all the shots, the year JT scored 40 they used him a lot on the PP. they ran bumper plays to him and did a lot of screen shots. Now every thing has to be cross seam shots and get Matthews the puck. These guys care way too much about individual stats

Are you implying that JT isn't a 'skill guy'?

Oddly enough, the year he scored 41 goals was the year he had the lowest % of his goals and points on the PP, and actually spent the least time per game on the PP.

Matthews level of play has been alarmingly bad. It's like unfocused Harlem Globetrotter stuff.

I haven't watched much this season but from what I've seen Matthews looks alright to me. Its Marner/Bunting that are not doing much on that line.

Marner continuously loses the battle and Bunting is not doing his job to go after the pucks and agitate opponents. Matthews in my limited viewing keeps winning puck/board battles but as soon as he passes the puck gets out of o-zone.

Leafs aren't playing until Thursday. They had 2 days off between games too.

AND, Kallgren was coming off an injury. It made 0 sense, unless he was trying to injure Kallgren, that's the only logical explanation.

Expect Robertson in next game and maybe even Simmonds. I doubt Keefe sits Holl but he really needs to.

I would break up matthews and marner let opposition also think a bit differently and force matthews and marner to think differently

Two Cups and One Finals in the last 3 years Vs Two 1st round exits and One Play-in exit.
I really won't compare the Leafs to Tampa at all unless Leafs actually make it to the Finals. But pretty sure half the board here would be saying Leafs are really close as long as they make it pasts the 1st round and reminded everyone that Leafs used to be the bottom feeder of the league and should be thankful they made past the 1st round.

I doubt their fan bas is going crazy however multiple recent cups and a trip to the finals have a way of soothing the savage beast, unlike us who haven’t even won a single round in 20 freaking years

Again it's less about the loss but more about how they again didn't start the game on time. For some reason or another this team refuses to out work the opposition.
