I feel like Babcock did more with less couple years ago when we were tanking. Those teams played great, just couldn’t score cause lack of skill and we had terrible goaltending. The expectations are high now (and rightfully so) Babcock should definitely be on the hot seat if things don’t change
It's all about expectations ,previously there were none, now there are many!

Two games, people need to relax. This board was more fun during the dark years, when we were really bad.

Maybe it's time to bring back Marleau - Kadri - Marner. Mitch needs someone to play hockey with and it looks like Tavares doesn't need Mitch to be good.

And Matthews needs to wake up, two games in a row with the 4th line better than the 1st are not acceptable.

And they put the basketball floor in the hockey arena.

You know, I never really noticed that, wonder if there's a correlation with our drop in play at home last season, other nhl teams have basketball teams in their building and they don't seem to suffer shitty ice, it's definitely a problem at the leafs place

Wow just Wow a week ago everybody is picking apart Nylander, dumping on Sparks, we were 6-1 now lose two games yeah I know not pretty but for F sakes I can't believe some of the crap that I'm reading, Fire Babcock, this guy sucks, that guy sucks, the defense sucks, Marners too small, Kadri is useless etc and etc. freakin negative like Ive ever seen, our team only 3 seasons ago was a complete rebuild Nylander, Marner, and Mathews accelerated huge for this teams success also adding a goaltender, they are still pimple faced kids that got us to the playoffs 2 years consecutive, teams are now aware if they play the hard fore check and heavy on the body with no space on our team that the our team get rattled and make poor decisions with the puck and take away our speed, we also have alot of guys who have dropped in their play not firing on all cylinders and not willing to get their nose dirty losing a lot of puck battles and not willing to take a hit to make the play with turn overs between the blue lines. This team needs to get hungrier to win with full 60 minute effort, the 4th line is the only ones that put forth that high intensity fore check and pursuit of the puck in recent games while the rest did it in small amounts that is not going to win hockey games. They are going to have to figure how to combat the heavy fore check Boston did the same to us last playoffs, Everybody even the skilled guys are going to have to take hits and get their nose into the grey areas and win puck battles to have any success, thinking that you can out score your opponent with no work ethic will not last I think it was Babcock who stated this earlier on. The hockey insider Idiots who said this is a Stanley cup contender team this year made everybodies head fat and put a lot of undue pressure, thats all they accomplished.

I don't want us to burn out guys in October but when you're down 3 goals why not stack up two lines and run a short bench for the game. No way in hell Brown should have player more than Matthews in a game like that.
Kadri-Tavares-Kapanen
Marleau-Matthews-Marner

*Obviously don't run one line out there for 30 minutes like Edmonton did but you can easily run these guys up to 21-22 minutes if needed.

Hard to watch. Knowing they are capable of feasting, like the few earlier games. Makes you wonder how it will all play out, as the season goes on. People say teams tighten up and defenses solidify. I look forward to seeing where the management takes this team.

One would think a core of Anderson, Matthews, Riley, Marner, Kadri, Tavares, and whatever they get back for Nylander, would be enough to at least compete with top teams on a nightly basis. Can't win them all, but still. The compete level looks like it died.

At this vantage point I don't see why any physically robust mobile NHL team can't use this style of game to neutralize the Leafs enough to win 4 out of 7 games. Did someone suggest taking the next step was going to be easy? That all it required was to purge the lineup of every element of physicality and the team could skate around any resistance of their offensive might?

But to be fair the terrible ice plays right into the hands of the opposition playing a road game. The wealthiest team in the NHL and it plays in an ordinary stadium designed and built for the NBA not the NHL. If any city in the world should have a hockey only facility with the best ice in the world, it's Toronto. Anyways, there's nothing that can be done about that in the short term. Somebody hasn't been doing their job(s) with the ice.

and there are teams who do wha you want, and they tend to leave earlier as well. so no. you can't just be all "we aren't playoff gritty." and be like that's the end all and bea all because there are "playoff grity" teams that leave just as early.

OUR non playoff gritty team leaves early.

That’s the end and be all in terms of OUR story.

History repeats if you don’t learn from it.

It's difficult to sell praise after an ugly loss but here we go... I've been impressed with Gauthier. He's starting to look imposing as a cycling forechecker. He's moving around well out there. I thought Johnsson is looking more noticeable on the ice in a positive way. Ozhiganov is looking more NHL level. And shouldn't be missed that even when Matthews appears neutralized he's still getting serious scoring chances.

Leafs need some strong willed veterans who are hard to play against. This team is the softest team in history. Perhaps the easiest way to beat a team is to just out muscling them.

Add to that they're are very front heavy. After Tavares, Matthews and Marner you have a disinterested Kadri and some rookies.

In the last 2 games, Kadri didn’t throw a single official hit. He’s thrown 7 hits all season. Kapanen has more. Jake Gardiner has 14.

Last year, it was reversed. Kadri was what we hoped in terms of energy.

Tavares played 16 minutes
Mathews played 17 minutes
Brown and Kadri 17 minutes

It would be like Edmonton playing Lucic playing more than McDavid .

Babdick is turning this team into the most boring team.

If I was !Mathews and marner I would not sign here till he is gone.

I don't think quennville coaches this way in Chicago
If Tavares and Mathews can't score while being fully refreshed taking the easier matchups through for 17 minutes.. What makes you think they would have scored playing tired for 23 minutes? We have depth but our goalscorers weren't on, Babcock gave the relaible two-way players the hard matchups and set our superstars up fully refreshed and not against Blues top line. Our forwards couldnt make that work thats on them
