This is what happens when you focus on useless elements like grit and toughness instead of talent.
Hope that crowd of fans are happy.
Thats what cup winners do. They have zero talent, they grit their way to a cup.

yeah.... after getting embarrassed and swept by CBJ tampa added more "talent" to win teh cup

:sarcasm:

Now we're blaming Simmonds and Thornton? Damn, watching that game I saw them in the offensive zone controlling play much more than in the defensive zone chasing the game. Crazy that we're back to blaming our 4th line guys who get paid near league minimum instead of the guys who get paid 10x what they do or our goalies who just constantly get out goaltended from other goalies.

Nobody blaming them for the losses on them but they are being blamed for not doing what they were brought in to do. Not only that they are taking two spots

This is not just this game, this is every game. They never play on 3 on 3 so you can't never really blame a loss on them
But they do play on PP, you know that pp is 2 -43 and needed a 5 minute penalty to score?

Will Foligno and Hutton be available on Tuesday?

I doubt it. Quarantine should be done by tomorrow for them and they probably want to get them into a practice or 2 before playing a game. So maybe by Thursday or Saturday.

Our top paid guys scored goals tonight and had tons of chances, did they not?

We won in regulation and had it stolen by who? Who did it. Who made the call it wasn’t in? I would like some answers at minimum it just gets mentioned by Sportsnet garbage rogers company. I can’t wait until someone else gets hockey rights.

Their goalie played really well, Leafs had over 40 shots on goal, made the posts and crossbars sing a few times. I don’t think they played that bad

Well as long as they're facing goalies that don't play well, they should be fine. Unfortunately, it seems that generally the further you go in the playoffs, the better the goalies get. So that could be an issue for these guys.

I’ve said it before but the biggest issue with this team is coaching, they need a veteran coach who can get it done and get the most out of this team. Bruce Beaudreau, Gerard Gallant, one of those types of coaches who are hardasses but still players coaches

The biggest issue with this team, IMO, is that everything has to be done with flare, dramatics and style. It has to look like they're playing the live version of the NHL video game. They don't score on point shots. They don't tip the puck all that well in front of the net. They pass up on grade A scoring chances, trying to create even better chances, then flub those opportunities far too often... And every time they get themselves into one of those games where they can't / won't finish, they seem to give up 1-2 bad goals, to rub salt in the wound.

That's why the Jets play them so tough. Toronto has more top end skill, but Winnipeg isn't worried about scoring pretty. They just what it takes (even if it's ugly) and Hellebyuck gives them excellent goaltending... Despite all that, the Leafs still beat them as much (or more) than they lose to them. The difference, However, is the Jets style isn't one that is going to be altered in the playoffs. Toronto, on the other hand...

Yeah, 1 goal at the tail end of a 5 minute major...I expected a pound of flesh along with the PP.

It makes no sense that they cannot score. I feel it comes down to working smarter, not harder. You can see they are not confident at all. In fact I thought the 2nd PP unit was better tonight despite Matthews getting the PP goal; but a PP goal on a rush is a PP goal in the stat column only.

This is three games in a row where our PP had a chance to impact the outcome of the game in a positive way, and not once has it delivered anything close.

This doesnt even make sense and its lazy as f***. You're not going to score 3+ every night. You're gonna run into a goalie that stands on his head. Doesnt matter the quality of the team.

This is an excuse.

And a very lazy one at that.

The guy hasn't played a hockey game in weeks.

How can you call him "hot" when he's played zero hockey?

Absurd.

They had chances when he wasn't on, but didn't convert. The longer it went, the better Holtby played.

Need Spezza to finish that wide open net and the PP1 to stop playing like idiots (last PP they were solid, others were bad). We passed up way too many chances early to try something pretty.

You're gonna run into a goalie that stands on his head.

Problem is we've been saying this far too often in the past while.

At what point does it stop being about the opposing goalie with a Horseshoe and when does it start being about the team not being able to finish in crucial situations?

How long are people going to keep trotting out this lame excuse.

They managed 2 goals against a team that
  • Hasn't played in a couple of weeks
  • Is coming of Covid infections
  • Was missing 3 or 4 regulars including their starter
  • Was on the PK for 1/3 of the 2nd period
  • Without their best PK Dman for a 5 min PK and the 2nd half of the game
But our goaltending sucks......gimme a f'ing break. These guys don't seem to have what it takes.
Holtby played well.

How long have some people been watching hockey? Like honestly, this is getting f***ing insane how some people cant see the shit right infront of them.

Holtby played well. Campbell didnt. Have you never seen a dead tired team or a just a shitty team get carried by a goalie one night? It happens.

Then we gotta read dog shit posts like yours all night.

Its really hard to respect this team after someone like Hyman gets hit dirty with a knee on knee and not a single person on the ice does anything. It's time to go after a REAL starter in the off season, I don't buy Campbell is the guy that's gonna gut it out and win you a hockey game. The past 4 games have been bad.

In saying that, Holtby stood his on his head tonight and won Vancouver the game. It seems like the same old song and dance when Toronto lost 6 of the their past 7 games earlier in the season. Played well enough to win the game but can't get a save when they need it.

Robertson - JT - Nylander played well for us tonight, hope to see that more of that line moving forward. I don't expect it though the way Keefe talks about Jumbo Joe and the willingness to move him out of the lineup.

Yes.

I think if you took away their names you’d probably want them promoted. What more do you want from 4th line players than hemming the other teams 4th line in the zone all night?

Except for 4th liners dont' play on pp. These both do
They werent' brought in to be 4th liners. One was brought in to defend this team and other to make some players and provide depth

You keep hoping for that young Thornton or that Simmonds that played for Philly. It's not your fault bro. I waited for Lindros to become the young Lindros too. That never happend either. Same with Ron Francis, same with when we got Clark back same with Cujo

The game has passed them. It's time to accept that and move on

Way too much reliance on skill and overpassing imo, a team that can play more direct like Col/VGK/TB/Bos puts this game away 4-1 or 6-2 or something. The Leafs seem to keep trying to make cute passes down low and making the other goalie look like an all-star. The PP can barely get any hard shots from the circles which any good PP does not to mention the lack of any point threat. They're in big trouble imo against any well-coached tight playoff defense like last year, they really haven't learned at all despite all the changes here.

I'm not overdramatic or make negative posts here but I now because I've been having flashbacks to last year with how they play and pass and really can't stay optimistic since the coaching or playing style isn't going to suddenly change to become more direct overnight.

AM was on fire but where is our Captain?
That’s my biggest beef with JT, I know he is a quiet leader but he rarely shows he wants to will his team to victory ever since he wore the C.
Marner needs to keep thing simple bc all the dazzle means nothing if the puck is not in the back of the opposing net.
Foligno will walk right up to JT and rip that frickin C right out of his chest.

I think we'll lose in 7. Habs will lose to Winnipeg in the 2nd rounds.

this team craps the bed when there is tight checking and no time/space on ice like playoffs. the offensive talent on this team doesn't know how to handle these situations; they keep playing "fancy" hockey and never get any offense going and turn over the puck trying to make "cute" plays.

hoping folingo's addition will help mitigate some of that stupidity in the playoffs. but to be seen.....

Taking spots from who? Please name these saviors who can help our PP who are on the taxi squad or the Marlies who can bring more in the 5-10 mins of ice time they'd get? Also, that 2nd unit that Simmonds and Thornton is on has looked way better than our 1st unit who has all our top talent on it. So please make this make sense.

Its times like this I remind myself this core has never won a playoff round... and suddenly I don't feel so let down.

I’ve played hockey all my life and when a stick breaks you also know it because of the unique sound it makes. Reilly has zero awareness and zero IQ. A complete moron on the ice. He’s gonna cost us in the playoffs I just know it!
