Marner is such an over-coddled finger painter. Cannot hold him accountable for anything.

I don’t understand why Marner is the over-coddled one. Or gets more of the anger. Matthews is playing like absolute dog shit as well and he is supposed to be our leader. Marner might be coddled by management/coaches, but Matthews is coddled by this fan base. He gets away with everything, no one ever holds him accountable. We blame Marner for Matthews lack of production which is kind of stupid

Appearances can be deceiving.

You’re never as good as you look when winning. But you always look as bad as you do when losing. And Leafs looked real bad while losing last night.

Almost as bad as I look to my mom who once had high expectations for me too.

The Leafs just lost to a bunch of old men. Their record is 10-9. It's after American Thanksgiving and the team isn't even in a playoffs spot.

But of course we're all overreacting.

It's like the team passes gas and we get the blame. They tell us it's our fault for not recognizing the stink isn't as bad as it smells at the time. While not acknowledging the fact that it still stinks.

Lies sound like facts to those who have been conditioned to mis-recognize the truth.
I don't think anyone is blaming the fans for anything. Last night's game was a missed opportunity to gain points on Boston, but Toronto very much outplayed those "bunch of old men". This was not like some of their other losses this season. My only concern with this game is that Keefe again drifted back to overplaying his top guys. Way too many minutes for Matthews, Marner and Nylander. Even too many for Tavares. Toronto wins when ice time is better spread out amongst the top three lines. I expect that Keefe will revert to more appropriate ice time levels against Florida on Tuesday, which should produce a better result.

I honestly couldn't fathom giving Marner a raise at this point. What has he accomplished in his career. Imagine paying this fool who doesn't even know what vitamin d is more money than pasta?
He's only getting a raise because of how disgustingly overpaid he is on his current contract. I still look at this contract to this day and can't wrap my head around how he got an amount that would overpay him as a UFA but as an RFA.

Mmhmm. I'm reading plenty of Matthews criticism across most of the pages in here.

Why is it that defense #1 of Marner is ALWAYS "but but but look at this guy instead!". It's such a lazy and terrible defense.

THIS X 100000
The reactionary stuff on here is so wild. I love all of our fans and their contributions, but people are WHACKED in the moment. We are still in a great spot considering we haven't been great. People post like we're dead last. The Devils were supposed to roll the east pre-season according to pundits and they are 500. Let's all just take a deep breath and let the season unfold. I think as we stand today, we are the same as previous years, maybe a worse regular season; but maybe win a round. That's not OK with me but let's enjoy the games and not be angry because we lose We could have easily won tonight. Tons of time for different things to play out, trades, players picking it up etc.

We always play up to the top teams and down to the weaker. That's because our top guys don't have high motors. You can win with that, but you need a tight defensive system and goaltending to be much better to average.
The reactionary stuff is wild why? We got cost 2 points cause our brand new 13.5 highest paid player in the league and soon-to-be highest paid winger in the league just straight up decide it's not a game worth showing to. This has been a recording for most of this season.

If Leafs are still moping along by Christmas, Keefe is gone, right?

It's almost December and the Leafs still haven't escaped their October funk.
Who extended Keefe and why?

We're not even 25% of the season in. ZERO people in here would bet that matthews and marner play like this for the majority of the regular season. Cut the "get rid of them" talks when you know you'll be their cheer leaders soon enough.
Still drinking the Kool Ade I see, too bad 34 and 16 don’t have your commitment to consistency……..

Slimeball but he did well for himself. More a good bullshitter than lucky.
Well you know the old saying BS will get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there, his careers dead, he just doesn’t know it……….

Yeah and if they give him a raise they just prove to us they havent learned anything and are not a serious hockey team.

Not to mention 5 regulation wins in 19 games over a primarily soft schedule.

Before the season many predicted the Leafs would run away with the division and possibly win the President's Trophy.

Now they're telling others not to overreact.

I feel for the guys who are busting their asses and playing to the best of their ability having to watch “the anointed ones” mail it in on a regular basis. Perhaps this is the year where it all falls apart, which might be a good thing in the long run………

This. My favorite is the guy who keeps saying "but look at Kucherov". No matter what ths issue is, the guy scans every player in the league until he finds one guy who has some cherry picked stat that's supposed to make Marner's disappointing play OK.

Not only were we winning the Presidents Trophy, Money Mitch was going to get 120 points, win the Selke and there were some Hart whispers as well.

I’m not defending Marner’s play at all but it goes both ways. Both are playing like absolute dog shit yet apparently one is the coddled baby & is constantly made a scape goat by the entire fanbase while the other doesn’t get nearly as much vitriol. I don’t understand that logic. Both are coddled. Both never face scrutiny. To me I view them both the same. They are both our best players. They both suck right now. Both of them equally get the same amount of vim from me. I personally believe both should have been benched and called out. Not just Marner

One's negotiations went virtually dormant while the others pissed off many of the fan base. He brought this upon himself. What he says to the media does not endear him to many fans either.

But hey, teenage girls are buying his jersey.

I've only read the last pages of this thread but I see plenty of people criticizing Matthews. Overall I think you're right in that Matthews is criticized much less than Marner, but in Marner's case I also think most of it is deserved. You might be right in that Matthews has escaped scrutiny much of the time, seems like that's changing now though. JMHO.

So true. I mean sure you can say that what he says to the media doesn't matter, only what he does on the ice but let's be real here - if you act in an unlikeable fashion, people aren't going to like you, that's just life.
