So true. I mean sure you can say that what he says to the media doesn't matter, only what he does on the ice but let's be real here - if you act in an unlikeable fashion, people aren't going to like you, that's just life.

Gary & @ToneDog thank you for bringing this up.

Why do you think the organization has gone so far in the direction to always protect Marner now? Don’t you think it has to do with the fact that earlier in his career, they failed to protect both Nylander and Marner?

People think Tavares is the reason we are having these cap issues with these guys. But the real reason is Matthews gets whatever he wants and that has definitely created tension among the the 3 (more specially Nylander and Marner) why are we surprised things have turned out the way they have? Matthews is put on a pedi stool getting all his bonuses, the other two don’t. That was really the beginning of the end. They should have done more to make everyone feel equal earlier.

I'm not sure what you mean by "protect". In what way did they not protect Marner earlier and are protecting him now?

The best way to protect him would be to never let him anywhere near a microphone for starters. Step 2 would be to hire the best sports shrinks in the business to work with him. JMHO.

Nylander and Marner were constantly in Babcocks dog house. Both spent considerable time on the fourth line, would get called out by Babcock. Also the organization didn’t protect Marner during the babcock list thing. I think that’s why they protect him now, don’t call him, never say anything negative. It’s gone too far to the other side now.

Hmm, OK. I'd say that's just two different coaches, one was a dick and the other is like you say - too far to the other side. I don't think the organization has any involvement there beyond hiring the coach. But now that I think of it, Keefe's job has to be in danger by now.

Exactly! Despite this evidence from last year, you are 100% correct.

Try and tell me this team isn’t dog shit. You can’t

5 regulations wins in 19 is simply f***ing trash. Just like this team
Did you know the last place sharks have 4, Columbus has 5, Chicago has 4….

The main issue is players don’t want to pay the price. Checking, going to tough areas, defensive play, rushing back, all this requires effort to the extreme, this team just doesn’t do that

It has to be on management‘s conscience that Matthews might not be able to do it. I’ve said it many a time that because he didn’t grow up in a hockey culture, he may not have what it takes to win big in the nhl. He’s proven time and again that in the big moment games, he seems to disappears.

I’m sure they know it but are too weak and feeble to pursue meaningful change. All the signs and opportunities to move a core player have been there for years now after playoff failure after playoff failure but they just don’t want to.

Pansy management which matches the product on the ice.

Get outta here with that psychology weakness. I’d be nice if they taught him to shoot the puck.

A core fundamental to being a leader of men is to reject passivity.

He's only getting a raise because of how disgustingly overpaid he is on his current contract. I still look at this contract to this day and can't wrap my head around how he got an amount that would overpay him as a UFA but as an RFA.

This is what blows my mind, but it's not surprising really. Marner will get his raise just by default cause that's how GM's in this league operate. I'd love nothing more than the organization to humble this guy and Paul and just move on already. With Marner's NTC that isn't going to happen though, ship has sailed. He's too important to MLSE marketing wise so I'm not holding my breath.

Moving Marner up and down the lineup won't help.Marner has to be traded. Trade him, sign Willy, add character player instead.

A trade like Schenn for JVR would be ideal. Hell a 34 yo JVR would be a better partner for Mathews. 2013 Leafs almost beat Boston and were like twice grittier than current team.
