If its a good shutdown defender, the price will be heavy. Typically the draft is the best way to get one.

They could try their luck in the free agency market this summer. Typically, there are not an abundance of bargains to be had through this route though.

Not sure if there's a rush or what the Leafs management timeline is especially given Shanny's statement about being "patient". Of course, there will be wide debate on that

Developing a "good shutdown top4 defenseman" from a draft pick usually takes at least 5 years, and even then it's not a sure thing. Playing defense at a high level in today's NHL is one of the hardest things to do. It's easier to be an offensive Dman, IMO.

I am also confused with some of the names brought up in this thread. Doesn't "shutdown defender" imply that the Dman is really good?

Dreger: Will come as no surprise that #Leafs have Peter Holland on the trade market. Has been in and out of the lineup.

Dreger: "Lou Lamoriello is also looking for a shutdown defenseman." Lot of teams in the market for D. #Leafs

My 2 cents - the defense thing could take months to play out, maybe all the way until July 1st. Pretty obvious that the defenseman and Holland are separate issues entirely as we're not getting anything special in a defenseman for Holland.

These were kind of obvious too. Of course we need to upgrade D and Holland has been scratched is on the market. Nothing groundbreaking.

Top notch reporting from Dreger right there. A guy who is a healthy scratch most nights is available for trade? Duh

Leafs looking for a Shut down D man.....Them and every other team in the NHL

Dreger is slowly being left behind in the Hockey insider circle. Freidman, Leburn are the top dogs, Kipper Bobby Mac next tier and Dreger is slowly going away ever since Dave Nonis got fired

Bob McKenzie is top tier and miles ahead of Kypreos

McKeznie has just been less internet busy than Friedman. But his inside in the NHL is arguably the biggest of them, and his TV game is top notch.

I'd put Renaud Lavoie near the top too, and put Seravelli near Kypreos now.

You aren't getting Montour for Holland. Don't be ridiculous.

Pretty sure that was a joke.
What isnt a joke would be the Leafs ability to take on salary and a good prospect D (RHD if possible) for a decent prospect.

We don't need another Hunwick or Polak type.

We need a guy to turn our top 3 (Rielly, Zaitsev, Gardiner) into a top 4.

Obviously that would cost more than Holland. I don't expect us to make this kind of a move during the season, more of an off-season move.

Low danger shots have below 8.5% success
high danger shots have above 8.5% success.

the average High danger shot goes in 5 times more than the average low danger shot.

94% of the top 300 even goals scorers goals come from forwards.
D men have to abandon defence of path to there own high danger shot area to get good attempts at goals.

D men are 4 times less successful at generating goals than forwards.

The primary role of a d men is defending the HD shot area in front of there net and passing the D....... puck to the players who can get goals without exposing defence of there net.

As such all d men should be Defensive D men.
Cause almost all d men generate offence at a #10 forward level or worse.

Reilly bottom 5 HD shot /60 D man.
#175/219 2.85 EVGA/60 Dman

Gardiner Bottom 40 HD shot/60 D man
#186/219 2.96 EVGA/60 Dman

Zaitsev Bottom 60 HD shot/60 D man
#159 2.68 EVGA/60 Dman

Lebrun is top dog ahead of Bobby Mac? No sir.

Bobby Mac and Friedman are 1-2 respectively in the top tier. Lebrun is in the next tier with Kipper and Dreger.

If the Jackets were able to flip Ryan Murray for Trouba, I'd say that would make David Savard expendable for a young scoring center (Nylander?).

About the only time I have seen it used properly on HF.

Bobby Mac doesnt report everything he hears because he is trusted. If you hear it from him its because the GM told him to say it.

If Peter Holland is the main piece, I doubt they get much at all.

Devils would likely offer a guy like Merrill for Holland, but I'm sure Toronto has 3-4 guys just like Merrill.

I hope that was David Savard was a typo for Seth Jones or Zach Werenski.

Engellend could be had for a 2nd.

Not top 4 but he's been amazing this year. I'd want him for a playoff run... but ya.

He has a point though, especially if those HD shots are as bad as he says they are. Advanced stats are only used poorly when they are used as the basis of an entire argument, but that goes for any stat. If I say goalie X is better than goalie Y because he has a better SV%, that is obviously completely flawed.

Those numbers are definitely concern which could definitely signal a need for a shutdown defender that stabilizes things in the defensive zone, especially if they can find a quality one that they can pair with Reilly.
