Change the thread title. Confusing too many people. Holland is separate from the need for a SD D.

BTW, why not just wait for the stud prospects they have on D? There's 3 on the Marlies who look terrific.

why? cant people spend 10 seconds to read the OP?

Well, I doubt they're going to offer up major assets anyway, so why not.
Besides, it would be nice to have someone solid back there helping out Rielly/Zaitsev/Gardiner and maybe we can win a few of these 1 goal games we've been on the wrong side of lately.

1. You'd need to be a little silly to confuse the situation. It is 2 separate points.

2. You're going to be waiting 2-3 years for the defense to develop and no guarantee there is a stud there. Need to make steps now. If we have excess defense later we can move for a premium.

Yeah this rumour screams Tanev to me

I don't see it. I doubt Vancouver moves him to us. For some reason, I see a smaller move involving cap dumps. Corrado plus one of our cap dumps (possibly retained) for another cap dump and pick(s).

I.e. Stoner, Z.Michalek, etc.

Man, they talk about patience but here they are, giving up on Holland already. :shakehead

On a more serious note, it'll be interesting to see what kind of shutdown D-man they go after. If they go cheap and look for a short-term upgrade on Polak, or if they want to look at something with more long-term appeal.

If its a good shutdown defender, the price will be heavy. Typically the draft is the best way to get one.

They could try their luck in the free agency market this summer. Typically, there are not an abundance of bargains to be had through this route though.

Not sure if there's a rush or what the Leafs management timeline is especially given Shanny's statement about being "patient". Of course, there will be wide debate on that

Alzner and Shattenkirk would hold appeal but I doubt the Leafs could land either of them.

I see Shattenkirk heading to NYR or BOS, maybe even DET.

I think Washington will try to re-sign Alzner.

Ya, clubs find a way to retain "the big fish" so to speak.

Cost is usually quite high when you dip your toes into this market for the few that are actually available.

These guys would be worth it and I don't always say that about the big UFA. Ryan Suter worked out well for Minnesota as well so sometimes you need to pony up some bigger money.

This is a captain obvious moment. It confirms that these reporters lurk on here more than I thought cause we've been saying this for awhile now.

I still don't know how Dave Nonis would even have a clue what's going on with the Leafs, he must have a source inside the Shanalou HQ!

Whenever I see a Dreger Leaf rumour now I assume the opposite. So, with that said, in b4 the Leafs sign Peter Bondra.

Holland reminds me of Colborne. Some games he looks absolutely dominant and leaves you thinking maybe he could be a #2C. The other 81 games he plays like he doesn't care.

He's a Leaf fan so it sucks that he didn't work out but I doubt the Leafs get anything of value for him and he will most likely be used in a deal to even out a small amount value.

Didn't Holland clear waivers just last year?

During his salary arbitration this summer he was placed on waivers and cleared.
Then signed a deal.
He plays so little I forgot he was even on the team.

Holland is a shootout specialist. I am not sure what he can bring back in a trade? He's not a top 6 fwd on a decent team. He's not good enough defensively to be a shutdown Center. 1.3M for a 4th liner is okay I guess. I can see him excelling in this role. What teams can afford 1.3 as an upgrade at 4th line C? And what do you pay, I suppose not much.

Wouldn't be surprised if they're asking for Josh Manson. Don't see the Leafs giving up what the Ducks would be asking for in return though. Wouldn't be one of the big 3 of course, but guys like Kap and Brown aren't enough from our point of view.
