Anyone watch Carlyle's press conference earlier tonight? I think i'm going to like this guy a lot

Definitely gave some great answers. Loved his comment in regards to how this team is not about the individuals but how they as a group can bring respect back to this franchise.

On the goaltending - I'm confused with the Scrivens praise. I thought he was awful. I actually didn't think Scrivens was good at all tonight. Thought he looked nervous, was all over his crease, clearly needs to sharpen his skates, and was generally fighting the puck all night. His rebound control, from the very first minute of the game, was bad, and it's no surprise that MTL's goal came from a rebound.

I didn't think he was AWFUL, but I agree - he looked a little shaky. Went out of his crease and behind the net a bit too much, and against a good team (which the Habs are not) it could come back to bite him. Rebounds were an issue too, but IMO he did a fine job nonetheless. Got the win and didn't let in an embarrassing goal, or a number of embarrassing goals, which was good to see.

Good way to start season, even if it was Habs.

Grabo line didn't look so great, JVR-Kadri-Komorov looked decent I thought.

I agree almost to a tee.

Hell, I was most impressed with the penalty kill... it actually resembled a kill as opposed to a prayer.

Though it was against the Habs... I remain doubtful.

whatever happens, that looked so good on the Habs. And good to stick a big W to the media and all the jokers.

I'm pretty much fine with whatever happens after this, at least they showed up tonight.

Despite the Grabovski line being god-awful, I thought MacArthur looked fantastic. Was playing with an edge and with a lot of grit. That being said, I'm let down with his two linemates. That Habs goal was entirely Kulemin's fault.

I expected better out of grabo considering he has played over in the KHL. Mac showed leadership tonight but lets hope he keeps it up for the other 47 games

I wasn't "thumbing my nose" at the Habs. I was simply pointing out that they are still currently a weak team and that people shouldn't get excited about the Leafs (another weak team) barely beating them.

Both teams were brutal last season, which landed both of them in a top-5 draft position at last summer's Draft and NEITHER TEAM has really done anything to significantly improve their lot as of yet.

BOTH TEAMS are curently cellar-dwellers and are, by definition, mediocre. As such, I was suggesting that the people posting here who are prematurely getting excited over this recent win should temper their enthusiasm until such time as this team proves itself to no longer be mediocre.

I think you need to read the dictionary again my friend. Mediocre means, average, a .500 team. A cellar dweller is not mediocre, they are below mediocre.

PP 2 for 5 PK 4 for 5 solid start but for price this could have been 6-1 now hope for buffalo and philly to have a physical game tire buffalo out.

I was very impressed with Komisarek, might have been his best game in the blue and white. Didn't look lost, wasn't chasing the puck, reminded me a bit of the days when he used to go head to head with Sundin.

Hoping he continues to play solid.

Habs targeting Leafs goaltenders?

Seems the midgets keep targeting our keepers as a fair game target. Last year it was Gionta on Reimer, last night there was a Scrivens bumped, and a goal was waived off for a Habs player being in the crease.

Then there was Plekanec's intentional spraying snow in the face of Scrivens that resulted in a PP goal.

I wonder how Montreal would react if the Leafs did the same to Carey Price.

For all those saying Kadri looked great, he had less than 10 minutes of ice time. Only Brown and Orr played less minutes. I hope the mind games of the past don't persist under Carlyle and they give him a legitimate shot to see what he can do.

Easy, they'd freak and call the player dirty. Pleks was rushing at Scrivens pretty hard too, thought he was going to hit him. Love how they boo after hitting scrivens. It was a pretty clear "no goal" call.

^ Carlyle admitted it was his fault Kadri didn't get enough ice-time.

That was perhaps the most shaky first star of the game performance I've ever seen. Alarming rebound control, Scrivens has to get that under wraps, because a team with guys who can actually score will murder that type of performance. Must say though, great team defence, we had a very definite hive mentality, was so good to see.

Loved Komarov, McClement was great, we have real grit.

Things that concerned me:

  • Scrivens
  • Getting dominated on faceoffs
  • Constantly giving Price the puck on the PP dump ins to clear the zone
  • Offensively invisible 2nd line
  • Dumb penalties (Franson takedown, Grabo's slash)

I'm only worried about Kadri with respect to faceoffs. Bozak and Grabo will do fine, we had an off night in the face off circle but they are historically good enough.

So thrilled about komarov. Loved what I saw. He's gonna stick and become a huge part of our team. Reminds me kind of Tucker in some ways. Kadri is here to stay for sure - he looked so different from what we've seen of him in the past in the NHL - even though he probably could have stuck then too.

If either reimer or scrivens can be average goaltenders over the year, we're gonna do just fine.

What does ice time have to do with it? He still looked great.
