One decent game against a weak opponent proves only one thing: that you're only a little better than the weak team you've just beaten.

Lets be honest this team has been a lottery team for 4 years I don't think were in a position to consider any opponent weak, we need to at least get to the "mediocre" level before we can start thumbing our noses down at other teams.

hmmm?

Liles was my d-man of the game. Guy looks like he did pre-concussion last year, maybe even better.

I was blown away with Kostka's defensive game. We all know he can do it offensively but defensively he was lights out. GREAT debut for him. It's going to be tough once Gards comes back but it seems like Randy really likes Kostka.

Phaneuf I thought looked awkward, out of it, and not great. He wasn't bad, but he just seems lazy.

I thought Bozak was fantastic. He looks really fast (maybe it's just his flow blowing in the wind ) and stronger. Extremely strong defensively as always.

On Kessel's breakaway, he came out of NOWHERE. I can't believe how fast Phil is.

Franson played great. Don't care about the penalty, because I hate Gionta and like seeing him get ragdolled.

Komi, very solid. Possibly his best game as a Leaf.

Gunnarsson was more physical than normal. Otherwise, typical game for him (good).

JVR unspectacular. He needs to skate with the puck more often. He's also a giant.

Lupes off to a slow start. Not worried at all.

Kadri was our player of the game for sure. Komarov was awesome as well. Great third line.

Win or lose, we are celebrating seeing development.

Our prospects, kadri, kostka, komarov and scrivens. They all got their feet wet and played well. Other core peices like kessel and phaneuf played to the best of their ability.

Playoffs or not, I want to see development in our core peices of the rebuild. I think a lot of important peices played well tonight, and thats more important than winning or losing at this point.

Don't have any confidence in our goaltending.

Kadri, Bozak, Liles all great.

JVR underwhelming. Phaneuf not great. Grabo, Kulemin were not good.

Liked our fourth line.

Good coaching by Carlyle.

GG Leafs.

Agree 100% also I would like say Scrivens was battling that whole game(not in a good way) and both him and Reimer still suck gigantic balls at playing the puck.

Komarov played an unreal game as well, could see him turn into our next Gary Roberts type guy if he can keep that up for the whole season. He was givin'er all game.

Dion needs to play a lot tougher out front and not let guys (Especially 5'5" Gionta) get behind him and set up in front of the net. Grow some balls, be a captain and kick some ass when someone snows your goalie or falls onto/over him.

Not gonna lie, i didn't like the firing of Burke.

But Nonis made moves that had to be made, and I'm not sure burke would of made those moves because he signed/ traded for those guys.

But by dumping off Connolly and Lombardi, it really made our bottom 6 and PK pretty respectable. Im happy with the way those lines sit. Mcclement doesn't screw around.. lose puck on the pk and its down the ice before you can even yell Clear!

IF we shake off some rust and IF we have some decent goal tender play, we might surprise people.

Fired up the pvr and finished watching the game. At first I was just so happy to see hockey again that I lost all objectivity.

Loved Kadri's game tonight. Kessel, Bozak, Liles looked good. Impressed by Komarov and Kostka. Even Komi had a good game.

The team could have played better. This was a nice first game, but I hopefully the Leafs gets better as they play more games. Can't wait to watch more games and I'm thrilled to see the youth movement.

Anyone watch Carlyle's press conference earlier tonight? I think i'm going to like this guy a lot

I wasn't "thumbing my nose" at the Habs. I was simply pointing out that they are still currently a weak team and that people shouldn't get excited about the Leafs (another weak team) barely beating them.

Both teams were brutal last season, which landed both of them in a top-5 draft position at last summer's Draft and NEITHER TEAM has really done anything to significantly improve their lot as of yet.

BOTH TEAMS are curently cellar-dwellers and are, by definition, mediocre. As such, I was suggesting that the people posting here who are prematurely getting excited over this recent win should temper their enthusiasm until such time as this team proves itself to no longer be mediocre.

That's the best our d-corps as a whole has looked in a long time IMO. Liles looked like he had returned to form and then some, Franson played very well with increased minutes/responsibility, Kostka had an exceptional first NHL game and that may have been the steadiest performance Mike Komisarek has put in since his days in Montreal. Phaneuf was a bit lackadaisical at times, but still got the job done.

Scrivens didn't see a lot of quality chances, but that's what Randy Carlyle's system is all about. Was nice seeing the opposition actually being held to the perimeter and not allowed to crash the net at will.

We've seen the Lupul-Bozak-Kessel line and the Kuley-Grabo-Mac line play great hockey for stretches before.. Was sooo nice to have a 3rd line be able to outplay the offence and rattle the opponent the way JVR-Kadri-Komarov did tonight.. All 3 were superb.

Defence was lights out also, tremendous games from Dion, Liles, Kostka and Komisarek.

GOT THE W!!! GREAT START BOYS!!! 3rd PERIOD was a little shaky.. but solid defensively throughout the whole team. Grabo and Kulie need to get going, which they will very soon. I thought Komi had a solid game same with gunner. Liles was live throughout the game. Kadri shut up the haters. Bozy was also another standup to me.. and scrivs stood his ground and showed up to play!! GOOO START BOYS!!!!! GO LEAFS GO!! 1-0

It certainly wasn't a perfect game but I thought an important takeaway from this game was to see the guys buckle down and work for a win using Carlyle's system. At the end of last season, I felt like when things weren't going well when trying to work with Carlyle's system, they would revert to Wilson's run and gun system to try and generate offense. So while there was improvement, the first game reflected a commitment to the system in place and I hope they continue to improve on that.

While there were some standouts to me, the best part was that no one played poorly.

Kostka was outstanding today.

That being said, you look at his skating, and I feel he will eventually be exposed by the Bostons and the Rangers. It will be interesting to see how he plays as the teams get better

I really like the way Carlyle changed the team. The biggest improvements to me were defensive play, physicality which I hope will keep improving and the pk ! He really got the most out of most players including komisarek, while not hindering the games of our big offensive guys.

On a side note I really like kadri at center and not a winger.

Say what you will buy that goaltending tonight was very lucky, hopin reimer starts soon although I see scrivens as the start for now unfortunetly

While it was a nervy start for the Leafs, I felt that once Kadri put them 1-0 up, they relaxed and found their game really well. It was essentially a fearless performance by a rather young team, which got me thinking back to Burke as well.

Say what you want about Burke and whether you were a fan of his or not, but Nonis coming in and catering to the young players on the roster, it feels as though he's lifted a ton of pressure off the team and tonight they played like a team that had considerably less pressure on their shoulders than the home team. I think that's why you saw so many comfortable performances by guys like Kostka, Kadri, and Komarov.

Will be interesting to compare the contrast that on Monday.

Really impressed with how Kostka played tonight. Whos style of play would you guys compare Kostka's too?

Nik Lidstrom.

Seriously -the guy has played one NHL game. He was great tonight, and deserved his 22-ish minutes, but why not watch him for a little bit before we start comparing him to other players? We don't know what type of player he is, let alone what type of player he compares with.

On Carlyle - there was definitely a more systematic approach to our play tonight. Something that was rarely apparent in the Wilson days.

On the PK - While I thought our PK was decent tonight, I thought the Habs powerplay was absolutely atrocious. I'm not prepared to say we have improved on the PK side of things until I see us consistently kill off penalties against better teams, because tonight wasn't a fair reflection.

On Kadri - He's so much more involved and with the action at center. Looks so comfortable there too. Big concern is his face offs though. Did he win a single face off all night? He lost 7 or 8 in a row at one point. Do that, and your asking for trouble.

On the goaltending - I'm confused with the Scrivens praise. I thought he was awful. I actually didn't think Scrivens was good at all tonight. Thought he looked nervous, was all over his crease, clearly needs to sharpen his skates, and was generally fighting the puck all night. His rebound control, from the very first minute of the game, was bad, and it's no surprise that MTL's goal came from a rebound.

With that being said though, he got you the W. I'm not sure there's anyway you can't go with Scrivens on Monday. Beyond that, you can pick and choose and figure out when to get Reimer back in net, but right now I think you leave him in there. One thing you can't deny, is that the defense played really well ahead of him.

Face offs were definetly a concern with kadri for me as well, and scrivens I can say I definetly agree he was terrible just that the defense really helped him out tonight mix that with that fact that Montreal will probably be a runner up for Mac or jones. I see Monday as a huge test, and to be honest I don't think scrivens is a nhl calibre goalie.

Also you can't expect too much tonight but our pp was pretty bad besides the two goals, which without kessel wouldn't have been put up and we kind of let up in the third

Kulemin on The PK looked good. 3 Lines that can score should be fun to watch as the season goes on.

I hope Komarov can keep this kind of game going

The Habs were even worse than in last year's season opener, at least Reimer had to earn his win. Scrivens just basically had to show up at ACC. He looked pretty bad out there.

Well, that is pretty impressive that he stopped all those pucks while being at ACC, because game was in Bell center. :p:

Kostka looked fine, nothing extraordinary, but he looked comfortable. A great game for him in his debut with the Leafs. Liles however was the standout on D.

In regards to JVR, I definitely saw what some Flyers fans were warning about to watch out for...

Only one game at the end of the day, a win nonetheless. On to Buffalo.
