A couple of thoughts:

- I hate being a naysayer and Kostka played solid for the most part, but I don't see him keeping it up. Especially when the rest of the league picks up their conditioning (it was kind of sloppy hockey for the most part).

But what's clear is this team needs a solid defender who can eat some minutes for them.

- I also thought moving Phanuef to the left side was great. He's much better defensively (wasn't getting beat) on the left side.

- I don't think Kadri's minutes were a slight at him. 10 great minutes is better than 15 average minutes. Carlyle is easing him into the league and there's nothing wrong with that. I also noticed he had Kessel take some shifts with JVR and Kadri....so he did reward him though not with minutes.

Other than the typical Phaneuf blunder (Still don't know why this guy is captain) and some very sloppy play in the last 15 minutes of Period 3 this was a pretty good game for the Leafs considering they had no pre-season and most haven't played in 9 months.

Boring game too though. Both teams looked bad in the 1st period and parts of the 2nd.

Phaneuf was solid this game. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

Wonderful game, a bit sloppy but that's to be expected when most of these guys have been inactive for so long.

Nazem Kadri was awesome. He was very noticeable and made things happen. Very impressed. Komarov looked good too, and Kostka.

Best way to start a season!! Hoping kulemin, mac and grabo can get it going cause they were flat tonight. Great game from kadri and our defence in general played well.

Grabo, Kule, Mac, line has not been as good as they were in the 10-11 season, again I think the NHL has caught up to them, I wondered this morning when I posted could they repeat this success.

I see this more of a continuation of last year when Randy Caryle took over, Grabo has not played well or as well as he did when he had the green light to go under Ron Wilson's system. Bozak on the other hand continues to excel for Carlyle.

I'm not sure what is going on with Kule, maybe he is not the top 6 fwd we thought he was. Mac is a 3rd line winger, he is good defensively, not going to make the mistake of thinking he is a top 6 stud, so he doesn't disappoint me.

Really Grabo is the one that has to pick it up here, he was rewarded with a big contract, big money to be a top 6C that based on his pay should be miles ahead of Bozak and Kadri. When you are the highest paid fwd, you should play like it.

It's a one game sample, but going back to last year, he has not played well under Randy Carlyle. I know there will be some that hate hearing the truth, but has he since Carlyle took over as Head Coach?

He played a great game away from the puck....the whole line struggled offensively but defensively were our best line, hence the most ice time.

Kulemin failed to clear the zone when he had a good 2-3 seconds with the puck on his stick, costing us the one goal against about 20 seconds later. Very un-Kuly.

It was an incredibly sloppy game, including the officiating, but I really liked how our guys were able to clear the zone tonight and when they weren't able to they kept the puck to the outside and gave up very few good scoring chances. That alone made this team look different from last year's team.

I'm already tired of some of you guys. People already hating on Kessel when I thought he played very well.... What? Phaneuf was also solid but he's getting a lot of hate...

I just don't understand this teams fans sometimes.

He was terrific tonight. It's ridiculous the crap he gets.

Stick not on the ice on the Gionta PP goal was the blunder. I didn't say he sucked but he always has one brutal mistake a game that costs us somehow. Whether it be a dumb penalty, a terrible shot or pass leading to a break away or icing or some terrible defensive play that leads to a goal. Those are just a few examples.

Komarov, Kadri and Koskta all looked great. KKK lol.. :sarcasm:

One play does not make a game..... the goal was Dion's fault.....what was he doing going for a skate behind the net when killing? He was out to lunch.

Er, what? Grabovski played very well under Carlyle last year. Carlyle even called Grabovski an "energizer bunny" and was impressed by him.

Definitely not his best shift, but his penalty killing tonight for the most part was very good. Absolutely nothing going offensively, but him and McClement killed well.

tell me about it. Missing the playoffs last 7 years must have taken their sanity. The only guys that played terrible were Grabs, Kuli and Lupul looked mediocre.

Last 10 games of the season, 3 points, -6.

What is a good coach going to do? Call him out publicly like a bad coach like Ron Wilson is, and did to various players when he coached here.

All Kadri needs is a chance and an extended look. He is too talented not to succeed. The kid throws his weight around and is committed to getting stronger defensively. How can you not be a fan of his?

Looking at the stats, Leafs didn't do well in faceoffs.

I noticed this during the game. We did very poorly on the draw..Grabo lost quite a few draws and Bozak was not his usual self in that regard either. Kadri was also not very good, but that's to be expected.

Also I forgot to mention but it's awesome how the two players who were rumoured to be traded for Luongo were the ones who scored this game

Played a solid team game but Montreal looks REAL bad.

Good to win the teams first game but lets keep in mind that it was against Montreal.

Marlies propel Leafs to Victory

After a lengthy but magnificent pre game ceremony, the puck finally dropped on the Leafs’ 2013 season. It didn’t take long for the excitement to begin as 46 seconds in it appeared as if the Montreal Canadians opened the scoring; however, it was immediately waved off as Ryan White ran over Ben Scrivens a la Brian Gionta, and got two minutes for goalie interference. The penalty was killed off rather easily, but the Habs then shot themselves in the foot again by taking another penalty.
