And he looked much better than Malgin. So even if you are the best player available you can’t make the team cause the GM screwed the cap up

What does Robertson do better than Malgin outside of shooting?

Look at the line, which player fits better?

Malgin also was as good or better than Robertson in pre-season.

Gonna make a prediction now ....Malgin evens the score and out-performs Marchment this season (at a fraction of the cost)
I don't think malgin could out-perform marchment this season..... he can of course out score anybody, but not out perform. Marchment is a guy who hits, fights and plays tough and dirty. Malgin is a softer player with talent with the puck. He can out-score him, but will not play better hockey than him.

I would prefer Robertson come onto the roster hungry, rather than have him fed too early.

That he has to wait a little longer might make him want it all the more.

If this gives him a little piss and vinegar, then I don't mind that either.

I like my hockey players a little pissed off and angry, and not all jolly and happy with the World. Fred Gauthier might have panned out if he'd eaten broken glass for breakfast, but he was too happy and jolly.

No need to coddle Robertson.
He came into camp hungry and won a job, he wasn’t fed anything or coddled, that’s the point. I get why the team has made these moves, but the stuff above has nothing to do with anything.

Habs might have to play 4 rookie dman with Matheson listed as day-to-day. That would leave them with a defence of:

Harris - Savard
Guhle - Wideman
Xhekaj - Kovacevic

As bad as that seems, Toronto seems to struggle when playing down to an opponent. In theory, this is a game where the big 4 should feast.

Fair enough. I still think we can manage the cap better. We had a significant cap dump in the form of Mrazek in the summer which we paid a premium. Thought we’d have more roster flexibility given that deal.
Dumping Mrazek wasn’t the problem, it’s getting him in the first place that’s was the problem

Nylander and Malgin were the best in the preseason. Let's see if it carries over into the regular season.

This is possible. Malgin is not a soft player by any means though.

You will be surprised by how hard he is on the forecheck.

Nevermind the fact Malgin is 2 yeara younger and the trade happened almost 3 years ago and if Marchment had produced in Toronto like he did in Florida he still would not be here as there is zero chance they pay him 4.5.

Marchment also did nothing in the playoffs except get injured and take bad penalties last year and the previous one.

If I could choose 1 or the other it would probably be Marchment but since Malgin is who they have now I will cheer for him and hope he finds success instead of lamenting a trade from 3 years ago.

Ya’ll know Robertson will be playing Thursday right?

Why y’all pressed over one game lol
Likely only playing Thursday if Tavares is still out hurt. They can recall him on emergency basis if JT can't go Wednesday & Thursday. Otherwise, I don't think we see Robertson for a while due to cap constraints

There should a full containment lamenting thread where people could go to whine about Kadri, Marchment, Mcbackup and whoever else.

It's one thing to greif about those guys when they are making peanuts, but both just signed absurd contracts (imo) which I am very glad to have no part of. Time to move on.

Anyways, AM looking at that Habs defence like

He might get 60 tomorrow night alone.

Agreed but I think that is something management wants to work on this season. This team will have that flaw for sure and a lot of teams do, they will have those nights. But I think they want the team to treat each opponent the same in preparation, and the reason being that this group can't get it done when they have all the momentum.

So I think the goal this season really is to get as close to winning the pres trophy as we can. The group's goal is going to be to draw a bubble team in round 1 and have worked through the bad habits of playing down by then so they hopefully sweep them or come close to it.

Let's say Buffalo or Ottawa makes it and we face them round 1. This team should smell blood. Who the f are they to beat the Leafs without paying their dues? Leafs locker room went through the losses so it's not a lack of respect it's "sorry kid you'll get your turn".

Losing to another Montreal type opponent I don't think the franchise, locker room, fan base, etc could handle that. We'd see a full blown retool. But for some reason, I trust them to get it done this time.

So if Tavares is out tmrw we're rolling out 11 forwards? Game one of the season and we're shorthanded because of cap mismanagement? Am I reading this correct?

It's not cap mismanagement.

It's more-so, cap manipulation to ensure you can keep guys like Kerfoot/Holl on the team while using the LTIR from Liljegren or Benn.

So the trade off is(if Tavares doesn't play) is that you play 1 game at 11 forwards, but are able to play every game after that with 12 forwards because Robertson will be able to be called up on an emergency basis.

A trade off that is very well worth it.
