That explanation for Malgin over Robertson was awful.

Malgin was picked because Robertson was waiver eligible and our GM can’t manage the cap. Nice lol.

If I was Robertson I’d have my agent request a trade asa

Exactly. Finally his confidence is at an all time high and they bury him again in the Marlies. All For Denis Malgin. This is exactly why we can’t have nice things.

I really like that fourth line on paper. The top nine looks quite good, but wouldn't it make sense to flip Malgin and Engvall? If you're going to have Malgin in the lineup, shouldn't he be on a scoring line?

That one kinda flew overhead, didn't it?

They didn't lose one player to waivers (depth), and they play one game max shorthanded, if that.

It's very well managed.

I never said anything about losing anyone. We did the losing assets part in the offseason when we downgraded our 1st to dump Mrazek. That’s just one example but that’s another discussion.

If the cap was managed appropriately, we would be icing a full roster like the rest of the NHL.

Lines at practice today, as I understand it, were in fact:

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Nylander-Tavares-Malgin
Engvall-Kerfoot-Jarnkrok
ZAR-Kampf-NAK
Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Giordano-Sandin
Murray
Samsonov

I think Simmonds and Robertson knew. NAK and ZAR were penciled in as soon as they signed/signed a PTO respectively.

After Marchment's breakout last year it was nailed on Malgin would get a shot. We sign half a dozen 4th liners each season. There's no room for the kids. They'll get spot duty though. It was billed up to be a competition for a few spots and unfortunately, I don't think it was ever on the cards.

Anywho, it's been decided. Hopefully we'll see in April.
I think the idea that Malgin would get a shot because Marchment had a breakout year is absurd.

Teams/GM's lose trades all the time and it doesn't factor into roster decisions.

Malgin earned his spot just as much as anyone else in camp.

I have seen nothing in Dubas' earlier behavior that would suggest he would give a spot to Malgin because he thought he lost a trade.

They are icing a full roster of 20 under the cap. They may play one game one forward short depending on Tavares' oblique.

Why people would want usable cap space sitting in the pressbox is mindblowing.

It's excellent cap management.

Yeah, like the rest of the NHL.

Like the Colorado Avalanche who routinely played a man down last season. And they have nothing to show for it of course!

Take a look at Cap Friendly. The average team salary right now in the NHL is 83.1 million with all teams being 'under the cap'. The salary cap is 82.5 million.

Figure that one out. Over half the league is in the exact same situation. Change your underwear.

If we didn't have an $11M player injured, but not LTIRed we would be icing a full roster.

Playing one player short against the Canadiens and then having a full roster in game two is OK with me too.

We could have dumped McDonough or Palat to ice a full roster. We could have lost Kuemper, Kadri, and Burakovsky and iced a full roster. We could have exchanged Huberdeau, Weegar and pieces for Tkachuk and lost Giroux, Chiarot, and Marchment and iced a full roster. We could have given away Pacioretty and others and been cap compliant. We could have Barrie and Ceci in our Top 4 and be cap compliant

This Leaf roster is stronger than last year on paper (the Athletic believe we have the best roster in the NHL) and we are choosing to play one player short for one game. I would say that very intelligent (masterful) cap decisions were made.

But hey, if you prioritize having a 12th forward against the Habs in Game 1 over having the deepest roster in the NHL then that is your preference I guess.

Exactly. This is frankly the dumbest of takes. He cuts bait quickly when needed.

Heck, even Malgin was pressboxed in his first time here and loaned to the Swiss league. They cut bait on him quickly.

we are icing a full roster.

even better, unlike some other teams, we aren't wasting capspace on a spot we can fill for free with an emergency recall anyways.

Some people think everything Dubas does is an L reflexively; it shows that that is their takeaway despite this being one instance where he's maneuvered around the cap quite effectively. One can argue Dubas hasn't handled the cap well in his tenure, but this isn't one of those times.

They are not burying Robertson with the Marlies...he is being sent down on paper for one game. He will be in the home opener Game 2.

Then he and Malgin both play a few games until JT comes back...then we see how they fared on NHL games and make a decision then..unless someone is hurt.

You may not believe it but of course he would get every opportunity, how many games did they give him in preseason to earn a spot?
This is how all sports work, it’s not meant as a criticism, it’s just reality.
Had he shit the bed in preseason he wouldn’t have made it regardless.

Don't be fooled. This was decided a long time ago. It's no biggie. Just the way it is. There was no competition for spots due in large part to the cap, as well as the signings we made.

It's like ZAR wasn't really on a PTO. It was organized beforehand.

Source?

It’s incredible how the cap has been so poorly managed that we have to do this. People always brag we have the guy who wrote the CBA on here. Whoop dee doo

Didn't Colorado have to do this last year? A terrible cap situation they were in, they probably finished last year, can't remember.

I think they did the right cuts. It'll be interesting to see how everyone gels. Lines 1 and 2 should be really good.

Still not convinced entirely Tavares and Nylander are the best fit but I feel like they have more options this year to get offense from different lines or switch it up if needs be.

Lines 3 and 4 (especially 4) won't scare me as much this year if there up against the other teams top lines. Kampf is great to have on the 4th.

D will be pretty solid. Biggest thing will be goaltending. If it can be 910 to 915 save % I think Leafs will be go far. At least in the regular season.

Like the past few years it's all about the playoffs. Still really looking forward to the season.

Go Leafs Go
