They are icing a full roster of 20 under the cap. They may play one game one forward short depending on Tavares' oblique.

Why people would want usable cap space sitting in the pressbox is mindblowing.

It's excellent cap management.

No no, stop being silly. Instead of signing Jarnkrok in the offseason we should have used that 2.1 million on putting Robertson on the roster and keeping Simmonds and Mete in the pressbox. That roster would be way better. :sarcasm:

Lol. 15 teams at 0% capspace and somehow this is always and only a Leafs issue.

Not even trying to get into a huge debate here but how many of those teams are actually capped out? Aren’t teams still making cuts so a number of them will be compliant soon? 15 teams with 0 and more with >2.5m sounds like it’s missing some context here. Like Buffalo with >2.5. They are really in the same situation as us cap wise?

Either way, I get it. It’s a one game thing.

It is unusual for Game 1 but Tampa/Col/ Vegas and numerous other teams have all had to do this in the previous few years.

It certainly hasn't hurt their success.

Fair enough. I still think we can manage the cap better. We had a significant cap dump in the form of Mrazek in the summer which we paid a premium. Thought we’d have more roster flexibility given that deal.

I wish the Leafs more flexibility but the flat cap took that away from a bunch of teams.

If the pandemic had never happened it would be interesting to see the roster if the cap was at 90 million now.

I would imagine we would be right up against the cap anyways

I think the idea that Malgin would get a shot because Marchment had a breakout year is absurd.

Teams/GM's lose trades all the time and it doesn't factor into roster decisions.

Malgin earned his spot just as much as anyone else in camp.

I have seen nothing in Dubas' earlier behavior that would suggest he would give a spot to Malgin because he thought he lost a trade.
He was always.going to get the first shot. They may move on from him like they have done with others in the past, but I'm confident he had the inside track. There was very little competition for spots, which is fine. But every year the media seem 'intrigued' by the competition for spots.

Excited to see a bottom 6 that can match anyone's top/skilled lines. Nice never having to worry about what line is caught out there. Engvall-Kerfoot-Jarnkrok, ZAR-Kampf-NAK is an extremely defensively capable bottom 6. Hope ZAR & NAK bring some jam against the Habs....wanna see things get chippy lol

We probably would have, if we didn't sign Jarnkrok. It's a choice. Do they want a 22 man roster with 2 guys in the press box making a combined 1.5 million or more, or would they like to use that 1.5+ million on their 20 man roster knowing if there are short term injuries they will have to play short for a game before they can call up someone on an emergency basis. Obviously they've made their choice and would prefer Jarnkrok over having a spare player or 2. If the emergency recall option weren't a thing that would likely change the decision, but playing 1 forward short for 1 game before being able to get back for full strength isn't a big enough issue to choose to allocate 1.5 million in cap space to a couple press box spots IMO.

Ideas change as the landscape changes. 5 years ago everyone carried 3 spares. Then covid hit and teams got way closer to the cap than ever before and they realized that the press box cap space was better allocated to the roster and started reducing the number of press box bodies to the point some teams aren't carrying any anymore.

Predict your game 1 unsuspected hero.

Holl obliterates Habs coming down his wall all night both bone crushing hits. (One can dream)

id say anyone but him....holl is good for us since he can fill in when injuries hit but good lord no.

I'm gonna go with Kampf for some reason.

I’m liking the depth I’m seeing so far. Kampf on the 4th line is great to see. Robertson knocking on the door. Hopefully they get off to a good start against the Habs.

I never said anything about losing anyone. We did the losing assets part in the offseason when we downgraded our 1st to dump Mrazek. That’s just one example but that’s another discussion.

If the cap was managed appropriately, we would be icing a full roster like the rest of the NHL.
until they get some cap room if they run into nagging injuries they could be playing a man short several times throughout the season. Either that or they’ll be putting regulars on LTiR when it may not be needed.

Something will have to give at some point.

It cost Vegas. They played a few games short a man and, if I recall correctly, one game short three players.

I'm sure Vegas' downfall last year had all to do with their cap management and nothing to do with the laundry list of injuries they had to endure.

It wasn’t last year. Last year was poor player management and DeBoer.

Fortunately they got rid of some of the players and the coach, but they still have issues.

Vegas played games last season short players due to the cap. It wasn't the reason they missed the playoffs.

Mark Stone, Max Pacioretty and Robin Lehner all missing over 50% of the season played a large part in that. Eichel also missed a significant chunk. Reilly Smith missed about 30 games.

Exactly. Finally his confidence is at an all time high and they bury him again in the Marlies. All For Denis Malgin. This is exactly why we can’t have nice things.

And he looked much better than Malgin. So even if you are the best player available you can’t make the team cause the GM screwed the cap up

No, he didn't.

Malgin and Robertson both played well, and Malgin is a much better 200 foot player at this point.

But by all means, let your obvious distaste for the GM show up in every post.
