The flight one I'm not that bothered by, just factored in as a cost of doing business the same way oil companies account for fines ahead of time. Hell we should just take the fines for letting prospects use our facilities in the summer with professional refs, 100k for even a 5% boost to development is probably the best bang for the buck you're gonna get. I'm sure Barb Underhill's consultation cost quite a bit more.

Maybe start lowering ticket prices to put a dent into the revenue sharing.

His fine is particularly asinine given that Sutter flat out accused league wide refs of having a pro-Leafs bias and got away 100% with it
Especially considering the fine wasn't for his comments, it was for yelling at Wes. I'm assuming Wes had to protest to even make this an issue - nothing like a ref with a vendetta, history with the coach, and history with the team.

The NHL is a phucking joke.

I don't expect anything is going to be different when it comes to officiating in the upcoming playoff games.

Which is why this B.S needs to be nipped in the bud now. That's the softest, most polite term I can use.

A team outhits another 3:1 but they receive more PP's in regulation and one of the Blues calls was an auto "delay of game". Last night wasn't even the worst, nor at the worst time (as say...playoffs).

This isn't about conspiracies, this is about bad reffing, maybe an unconscious bias, I don't know. If the league cannot call a fair playoff series they should admit it and employ some Machine Learning programmers who can devise a model that will call the games. Over time, they will improve, learn and be far more accurate than the refs if we are to use last years playoff series as the standard in which to compare.

Get it right ffs

Games are not called to be fair, there is no intention or mandate for them to optimize for "fairness". They're called to be "entertaining" and profitable to their sports gambling partners. Blowouts where the penalties are 8-1 for the away team and the game is out of reach midway through the 2nd period are neither "entertaining" nor profitable for sports gambling. PPs are almost always going to be within ~2 penalties from even unless one of the teams racks up several automatic penalties, and even then they'll probably get a make-up call or two.

Refs ignoring holding, tripping, interference, hooking etc also benefits small market teams that can afford to make a shot blocking defensive team that crawls into a wildcard spot on OT points, they're never going to be able to afford the type of fast skilled team that "should" be drawing a lot of penalties. A round or two of playoff revenue for them is usually the difference between making or losing money on the year.

Essentially, the players may have less bearing on the outcome than the refs in many situations. As per league mandates - they are in the "sports entertainment" business, and not "sports".

If the league had it their way, every game would end 4-3 in OT or shootout. Keep asses in seats for 2+ hours so they can buy more 18$ beers than if the game was 6-0 in the 2nd and had a quarter of the building leave in the 3rd. The coinflip in OT/SO helps smooth out those pesky gambling spreads to make sure no one is winning too much, and the loser points help make the last month of the season full of "exciting" playoff races with several welfare teams in the mix until the end.

Throw in a play in round for all 32 teams to make sure that everyone gets some 0 salary playoff revenue and have some "exciting" upsets to gamble on.

If Wes complained about that he should go hang where many of us grew up. Keefe was being a gentleman with such justified distaste for the missed call.

It's good to see Keefe bring some passion. In fact, it's important from time to time. This is big business in a city that along with Montreal, Boston and Detroit in their good years has some of the most passionate fans. No Leafs fans is ever going to say "that's unbecoming a coach". If it's legitimate, it's fair game.

Refs and the league is a f***ing joke when it comes to the Leafs.

The last 4 or so years back this up on their powerplay time given alone.

The 25000 dollar fine is ridiculous. Wes is such a turd. I'd be f***ing embarrassed if I'd been around that long as a NHL ref and that bias.

100000 rule sure whatever but that's a cheapy gift for the league to pocket. Stupid rule coming out of Christmas when you have to travel.

And if I had a hundred thousand dollars (If I had a hundred thousand dollars)
Well I'd buy you a K-Car
A nice reliant automobile
And if I had a hundred thousand dollars I'd buy your love

This is rich. Two of my posts on the main board thread were deleted. Reason? Why can't you be more like Lloyd Braun? WTF?

All I said was that I expected a five part thread, and that the fine could potentially help pay for a proper dressing room in Arizona. Gotta love this place. p***yes.

The Keefe fine was not surprising and well deserved, But needs to also be consistent throughout the entire league and enforced accordingly.

When watching the game with young kids and the coach is embarrassing himself like that with vulgarity and rage it needs to be fined into being stopped in the future. Its supposed to be a family sport for all.

Both Dubas and Keefe as representatives of the Leafs brand and logo need to set a better examples of professionalism and etiquette.

Besides it wasn't the Refs missing the obvious 4 minute high sticking minor that enraged Keefe it was a rolling pick play on Benn that resulted in a goal, but not directly off the play but one thereafter after Benn had plenty of time to get back into the play and position and it wasn't scored directly off the play. Holl's obvious pick play in the playoffs cancelling the JT goal must have been the root of that entrapped rage.

With all the bad weather and having friends and family stuck in airports during the holidays the Leafs taking the fine and getting there instead of a postponed was likely worth the cost to break the rules.

Why is yelling at a ref a 25k fine from a guy making less than most players but Sergachev chopping Bunting's hands away from the play a 5k fine to a guy making 8.5?

Both teams should get 1 ref veto each playoff series. If the same ref keeps getting vetoed by every playoff team, maybe his employers should take notes.
Even if the NHL did that, Wes would still get into Leaf games because I guarantee the Leafs would use the veto on Graham Skillitor.

Hopefully Keefe yells at him some more. f***er deserves it most nights.

We must protect the kids from vulgarities and "rage" when the ref shows incompetence, but yet we encourage physical violence and actually cheer it on? Family sport? What?

Players and coaches would be bankrupt if they fined them every time they swore or got angry.

I would love to hear the professionalism and etiquette Pat Quinn and Pat Burns showed while here. Oh right...

Exactly. Kids today say much worse on their phones. I doubt Keefe's comments would even register.

Keefe lost his temper about both incidents. The TSN recap showed his reaction to both, and the high sticking one was actually quite humerous as he used hand gestures to re-enact it.

I've been a pretty big critic of Keefe but I completely disagree. The NHL has possibly the worst refs in the big 4 NA sports. Sometimes the players need to see their coach will go to battle for them and call the league out. IMO one of Keefe's biggest flaws has been his lack of passion, about time he showed some.

With the state of media today kids see much worse. It's a physical sport played by grown men who sometimes get into physical fights. A coach having a tantrum is not the big deal you're making it out to be.

The fine option exists in the bylaws because it is not accepted behavior, but it might be for abuse of an official more than trying to make the game more family friendly.

However I think they were related and in fact because of the overreaction and fineable offense of the first event the Refs may intentionally to spite Leafs and Keefe as payback not called the obvious High sticking play to the mouth of ZAR as he was bleeding to even the score.

The Refs after getting berated on the first decided to pretend the 2nd call was a follow through after discussing it. But 2 wrongs don't make a right.,

The outrage could have costed the Leafs the game in that respect.

Its likely good that it happened in this game and not the Philly afternoon game where it was take your kid to the game day on family day where the crowd was filled with young ones.
