Clearly the fact that our two best players missed 5 games between them and our best goalie was injured had nothing to do with having "arguably our worst series", in which we still made it to OT in game 7.

If you look at playoff production compared to regular season for the big four, I seem to recall that JT had the biggest % dropoff, followed by Mitch and Matty, with Willy having the least, by a lot. (But that doesn't fit your notbias, does it?)
Tavares was starting significantly less in the offensive than Marner.

Tavares - 11 offensive zone, 23 neutral , 25 defensive

Marner - 31 offensive zone, 18 neutral, 16 defensive zone

Burns me that we never upgraded from Samsonov, but that doesn’t fit with the narrative that Treliving is a genius.

By the way, re-watched Moneyball today, great movie.

And then all of this becomes irrelevant because they start like 60% of the time on the fly.

Grebenkin, keep working on the forecheck and backcheck and those NHL paychecks will surely follow! For now, it's good to have another lineup fixture return in Max Domi. GLG!!!

Damnit. I hate regional broadcasts. Out of town for work and no game.

Guess I have to find a pub that is showing it. What a shame

Not really. They've provided surplus value on their contracts over the last number of years.

It's possible to win a cup without Matthews and/or Marner. But removing either or both from our team would be detrimental and hurt our chance at a cup. There is no realistic better alternative.
It might hurt this version of the team but you have to factor in what their cap hits could replace.
As far as no realistic alternative right now you could be right, Dubas set us on this road when he signed Tavares and gave the others massive contracts before they even won a single round.
It’s a hard road to get off and I think it’s ride or die with this bunch.
The only chance to change it would be changes with Marner and Tavares this coming off season but I doubt they have the balls to do it. If I’m being honest with myself I think the only path forward is play it until these guys age out and wait for the next rebuild. I’m 69 and in great health so I figure I have another 30-40 good years so I hope the next build is without Shanny pulling the strings

The way he plays it looks like he’s been off for 9 months.
