From everything we've seen, Tavares is not really a leader whatsoever. He's like a respectable citizen who is bestowed certain honours, but I think he would be way more comfortable as an assistant. Just compare and contrast him and Ryan O'Reilly in his short time here. How one speaks, the energy levels, etc.

He is the consummate professional from everything that we have heard .. but he doesn't strike me as someone that hates to lose more than he likes to win, and that lack of intensity cascades to the team.

Was at the game tonight. That was tough to watch after the third goal. Tavares didn’t have a good game at all. Noticed Willy maybe two or three times. Brutal reffing aside these guys all mailed it in. Jones kept it close. Tomorrow should be fun with whoever ends up in net.

Marriage apparently has ruined Marner's on ice play ... no idea what's going on with him, but his underlying numbers are far from his career norms it seems. Just lots of poor decisions out there.

Nothing like ... you know what to give a guy brain fog ...

No, no he isn't

Mack drives play and controls thr game on an entirely different level, Matthews looked like he was skating in quicksand tonight head to head against Nate, it was pathetic.
They both drive play at a world class level albeit in different ways. MacKinnon has the advantage of Makar, Toews, Girard and Byram who open up space for him in a way that no one on the Leafs D can save for Rielly.

And, he’s limited in what he can do to impact a game.

Firing the coach and/or changing the core doesn't solve the main issue which is the defense. The Leafs need to be patient, avoid expending assets at the deadline and retool in the summer. I would strongly consider moving out Bertuzzi, Brodie, and Domi at the deadline if the team can't come to an extension agreement. This year clearly isn't it...

This group/coach has not won anything.
Paying 4 forwards that lean far on the skilled/finesse side has not resulted in any playoff success.
Sure the defense is a issue but it's not the only issue and this team fails to consistently show up and play 60 minutes of intense, physical, attention to details hockey.

At some point maybe we just have to accept this core isn't as great as we'd like or that their play styles aren't really suited for when the game gets greasy and the intensity gets ramped up.

Still believe in the team but clearly they need a coaching change. The defensive structure when we have a lead is poor. I think we can win but we need a new coach that demands structure and excellence 24/7. Someone to come in and disrupt the current power structure.

It's legit insane how many PPs they get. They have about an hour and a half more PP this season than we do.

That's 1.5 games more on the PP. Shit
You can see why they draw calls though the way they drive. Everyone is driving with speed.

It's hard to draw penalties when all you do is a hard curl at the hashmarks. We have very few players who challenge the opponents D in a way to draw a penalty.

There is bias as well no doubt, but we make it really easy.

Tonight was a mess. So many obvious missed calls on COL.

8 pks? WTF? All four 11mills snakebitten. They need to get at least 1 goal a game like this. And now is the time to put Tavares on third line. Or Holmberg with them.

I don't understand why we have to give these guys such player friendly contracts. 5 years to Matthews, then re-sign him for only 4 at the highest cap hit in the league, full NMC, etc. Then give Nylander 11+, full NMC, etc. Why?
You forgot that something like 90% of the money is paid out as "bonuses" each July 1st.

If the teams needs to look to their captain to find intensity and a desire to win we have bigger problems than JT...

Teams mimic the personality of their C ... this team is as vanilla as F...
