Too many last night apparently

The score doesn't reflect the all night beat down of the Lightning. Two of those goals went off of someone's skate. The last 9 min (agonizing to watch) was the referees tilting the ice for the fans. No doubt Woll came up big, but that's how a lot of good teams win.

Not that I disagree but I remember Pat Quinn doing stuff like that and it then spilling over into the players thinking it was OK for them to start doing it and the next thing you knew, the Leafs were getting the extra calls all the time. It's a no-win situation. Take the W and move on IMO. That said, I shouldn't be irritated after a good win. Refs really killed the enjoyment of this game for me.
Yep, that’s why it doesn’t even bother me anymore. NHL officiating is by far the worst of the major sports.

AM is clearly an elite player but there is the Sundin effect where lesser players defer to the Stars (like Matty and Sundin) to win them the game with one shot. The theory is the lesser players dont put in the same effort with him on the roster as they do with him off the roster. The sum of the parts is often better than the individual parts. If the best team was the team with the best player the Oil would be on a 8 year SC winning spree.

It's not that AM makes the team worse, it's that the supporting cast dont give as much of a contribution with him on the roster, is it because he is one shot superstar Matty? Maybe we are better, maybe we are not better, the record without him and the record with him certainly must give anyone a pause, it's not a small sample size. We are capable of playing better hockey with out him. That is a fact. Why? Are we a better team? I dont know.
What you say is true but it’s not only unique to Matthews. According to StatMuse, Tampa’s record without Kucherov in the last five years is 58-25-9. Penguins record without Crosby is 121-64-28 all time. Good teams find ways to win without their superstars.

WOW, that is crazy!! If someone was doing a Ph D in Sports Science, that would be an interesting phenomena to write a thesis about, I'd read it TBH. Why do some teams perform better without their best player?

It's not like we were on fire with our five on five scoring when he was gone. Is it our team just plays better? Is it that the opposing teams are not as amped up to defend because the big dog is not there? So they kinda come down in their level of performance? Is it a "we" thing or a "they" thing? A combination of the other team plays less hard and we play more hard?

Top 5v5 goal differential ranking for all 253 forwards in the league with 250+ minutes this season:

1. John Tavares: 74.75%

Pretty crazy for a "washed" player.
Pretty crazy too, when last year he struggled to generate 5 v 5.

Berube's style of play works much better for Tavares, which is what some of us theorized would happen. That said, I would still like the Leafs to move on from Tavares, even though I know that won't happen.

We have the best goal scorer in the world on our team and people actually think we are a better team with him injured. Absolutely wild some of the takes on him.
Maybe not better, but they are more fun to watch like they were in games 5 & 6 when he’s not playing.

Considering he hasn't been living up to his contract the last few years and when you watch him, he clearly wasn't showing up as a 11mil player.

This year he is showing that higher level of play and it is impressive. But come on, 2 years out of 7 where he actually had great years? Not really something to write home about.

It wasn't unrealistic for people to say he was washed up given his prior performances.

OEL is in disbelief and cognitive dissonance, as he plays the usual way, but gets penalties right and left. Get used to it, Oliver, you will be tamed and neutered in a couple months as all the other players joining the Leafs. Hit these refs with pucks whenever you can.

I did think it was a terrible call in the context of the specific play, but in this scenario, not sure it was a Leafs thing.

He got warned about the exact same play earlier in the game and I think the ref called him because of that.

I do think it was an emotional call by the ref and terrible, but also a dumb play by OEL, not sure why he needed to do that if he was warned earlier.

That was closer then it needed to be..

UP 4-0 after 2 and in full control, to leading by only 1 with 2.5 minutes left in the 3rd, and without Kucherov in the TB line-up.

An empty netter sealing the deal was a little too close for comfort all things considered.

I unfortunately missed the game. Did Berube split 34, 16, 88 to each their own line?

Nope 34 & 88 played together as did JT and 16.

There is no 3rd line containing an $11 mil player on their own attempting a top 9 build .,. Its still same old same old where only MM and WN flip positions with different centers.

Half of this board has no clue what they are talking about...

There is one outlier here and everyone decided it was the norm because of the name

All it took was that big slump where he had 0 points in 9 games last January and the knives came out. He's been pretty much the same consistant player his whole time here outside of that and has really worked on the defensive side of things the last couple of years while becoming maybe the top faceoff guy in the league over the last half decade.
