It's almost as if one of them regularly makes spectacular plays and the other one has a consistent history of being braindead and behind the play and are judged overall based on their regular performance, with individual success and failures viewed in that context.

I would argue that nobody had more spectacular plays than Slafkovsky so far in pre season.

His passes to Anderson, his breakways where he burned the D, his breakaway tonight, shootout goal in scrimmage.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't preseason where prospects are suppose to step up against other prospects?

Nobody is really in game shape at this point. I don’t know if the measure of a prospect’s progress is how he does against opposition prospects who come in varying degrees of talent and development. I would think it’s more a matter of sample size, game situations, reading plays, IQ and speed and whether there are signs of improvement over a given player’s last evaluation.
