Granberg should be slatted as the 8th or 9th Dman in the depth chart out of training camp. He just completed his first year in the minors. Injuries always happen which will allow him to be called up. If he truly deserves he belongs in the NHL then a spot can and will be created for him but there is the distinct possibility he might need more AHL time next year or his play might even regress from this season.

Nilsson hasn't even played on North American ice yet.

No need to rush either of these youngsters.

Leafs also simply need assets. Bringing in a vet on a 1 or 2 year deal allows the possibility to retrade that player for additional assets (or for the trading of another Dman due to depth).

oh bobby bobby naive bobby

I applaud the premise of your strategy but the sad stark true of it is, the moment this franchise even sniffs the playoffs , you know dang well they ain't selling anything off, one can only pray they don't spend to add, common man you know this.

lolz and we all know what "sniffing" means at the TD, if there is even reasonable hope of "just making the playoffs" they ain't selling.

your recycle premise only works if they blow it up and tank. this is known

odd, 70-90% of the worlds population is Right Handed, yet 2/3 Dmen in the NHL are lefties?!

Dominant hand on top is common theory, but it's not written in stone. I'd bet the majority of RH shots are also right handed.

You're probably more than right. Both of my bro's are right handed and shoot right. I'm right handed and shoot left.

Well we did draft 3 RHS D , one in the 1rst and another in the 2nd round, and 5th, rnd not that long ago but we traded them away.

Schenn , Stralman and Blacker.

Stralman was traded to Calgary basiclly for their 2nd, then we packaged that 2nd (Saad) and a 3rd to Chicago for our 2nd back so BB could threaten a offer sheet for Kessel.

Not true... Guys a gem so he can play whatever but hes a LD because hes left handed...But in Moose Jaw he played both whatever minutes he can get the kid will take.

Just because somebody shoots a certain way that doesn't automatically determine which side of the ice they like to play. I don't know which side Rielly himself prefers but there are plenty of players in the NHL (and other levels) who prefer to play on their "wrong" side. There are advantages and disadvantages to both sides, a players skill set, familiarity, team structures and playing style are all factors. In other words, it varies player to player.

Assuming our D is; Phaneuf, Gardiner, Rielly, Robidas, Polak, Granberg and Holzer

3 Lefties, 4 Righties.

One of our lefties plays the right side too (Phaneuf)

We went from one extreme to the other

hand matters ?
I'll assume you've never played hockey.

Thanks for the update.

Obviously Nonis read this thread and picked up some right handed D man.
And not even a tweet to say thanks.
I wonder why I even bother helping him via hfboards.

Just joking.

I've wondered about this as well.

It's been said that Dion prefers to play the right side, so assuming we have Dion, Robidas, and Polak as the shoe-ins for the right side, who's behind Gardiner and Rielly? Or is there some plan to play Dion on LHD?

Dion likes to play on the right side, but Carlyle doesn't like it. Randy is crazy when it comes to playing players on their off side, D or wingers. That's one of the reasons Lupul never played on the Left side in Anaheim under Carlyle, because he shoots righty.

Carlyle always trys to shoehorn guys into their narural position, if they like it or not. So I expect Dion to be on the left side. This may help him in our end of the ice, but hurt his offense.

Physicality was probably the chief consideration.

When the Leafs made the playoffs Mark Fraser was a force physically and Polak is being brought in to play that same role only being far more mobile.

Last year the team missed that dimension and the defense was too soft and had little push back.
