I think he could have gotten significantly more on the open market. Which still doesn’t mean this ultimately will be a good deal.
He cannot get an 8th year once he hits free agency. Another team would have to go over $9m to match the money the Leafs will give him. Something also tells me he wants to come to Toronto the same way Tanev did.

If we dump Rielly, I guess it's reasonable as we'll have the younger, better player defensively, signed to a similar age Rielly is signed to, but at a lower % of the cap by the time Raddysh gets to Rielly's age in two years.

So cap-wise, pretty neutral, if we move Rielly. But get the bomb point shot that should open up our PP quite a bit, and a guy we can trust more 5 on 5.

Give him a massive signing bonus to to keep that AAV down and let’s hope we don’t have to spend a decent asset to get this sign and trade done!

If the AAV actually comes in under 9 then this is fair market value, if anything a little favored to Toronto. Hopefully the trade isn't too much - maybe the Philly 3rd round pick in play?

The Leafs still need a number 1 dman but Raddysh could be our long awaited Bryan McCabe replacement on PP1

Clarkson was a middle 6 winger with poor underlying metrics we were hoping could keep his scoring touch and didnt so made him kinda useless.

Raddysh underlying numbers were very good and he put up incredible production but im just hoping it wasnt just all part of how he jelled with the team and his partner Moser.

Even if he takes a slight step back overall from last season, hes still worth it as a solid top 4 RHD and an actual PP bomb for the first time in forever.

I dont expect the end of the contract to kind though.
Not to mention, the year before the Leafs signed Clarkson he actually had a bit of down year. He scored 15goals in 48 games and 6 of them were on the powerplay. He scored 9g and 7a in 48 games 5 on 5. He scored 5 goals in the last 28 games of the season and 4 of those were even strength. We legitimately signed a guy who had scored 5 goals in his last 28 games to a 5.75m contract. It wasn't like Raddysh, where he was great and might fall back to the norm, Clarkson had already came back to the norm and The Leafs didn't care.

Raddysh is a weird case of having 2 good seasons as a top 4 guy and then 1 season as a legitimate top pairing guy when one of the best defenceman in the league (Hedman) missed significiant time. The 3 months Raddysh played the most were his best. There's clearly a norm here for Darren Raddysh but its hard to predict. Is he a top pairing pp1 guy? Or a 2nd pairing guy with a great shot? People seemed to forget he was quite good in 2024 and 2025 as well.

There was smoke around him coming here around Christmas if I'm not mistaken I believe it was Kypreos who pretty much said back then that Raddysh it was pretty much a lock to come to Toronto

Looks like Johnston has confirmed it 30 mins ago.

He is officially a Leaf!

Part is horrified he’ll age like milk and we’ll have another Clarkson on our hands but we needed the help. With no 1st rounders in the next two years a rebuild would have been pointless so you might as well go for it.

At least this means we’re prob gonna f*** Boston’s pick up even more in ‘28 all things considered.
This market tears apart disappointing dmen so I truly hope this works out

The 8th year will get the AAV down. Signing bonus will not as cap hit will be determined by total money divided by 8 instead of 7.

I think if all he wanted was the most money possible he could have hit 10M in this weak FA market with all these teams having cap space. Which again doesn’t mean 8.5 will age well.

Edmonton offered Clarkson more than we did which didn’t change the fact that we signed him to a bad deal. Not that they are the same player.

It’s not our money obviously. But our team.
I don’t think it’s unreasonable to worry that a guy who had a massive outlier season at 30 could be a one year wonder.
I also don’t think it’s unreasonable to be excited that your team is getting potentially the best UFA Dman on the market.

Personally I don’t overly love this or hate it so I’m mostly in wait and see mode.
The cap raise this season makes this essentially meaningless.

And he's had 3 very good seasons. He's been in the top 25 for 5v5/60 for 3 straight seasons now, and he's a RD.

So yes, I would say it's somewhat unreasonable to worry about this if posters don't bother to spend 10 seconds getting their facts straight.

They cleared $5 million in space by the Woll trade alone, so......why the worry? It's only 8% of the cap for the top D in the UFA market.

He had great underlying metrics for a couple of years before this breakout season. Is it surprising production followed him being given the opportunity on PP1?

He will play on the powerplay here because he and his point shot has been a dire need for a decade here. Besides, if he’s making $8m-ish, he’s not expected to put up point-per-game seasons. Literally if he puts up 45-50+ points regularly and plays a strong 20+ minutes a night, that is still a steal of a deal with the cap going up.

Shocking how people can be upset over this.
I don't know why that'd be shocking. Unless he can provide some REALLY solid defense, 8 mil for 8 years for a 50 point guy isn't terribly appealing, especially if and when he starts to fall off

Sure but signing him and him turning out to be a dud are two different things. Until he shows that he is a dud, this is a good day for Leafs fans and Auston Matthews IMO.
